Nice Planet 2012

Re: Nice Planet 2012

That depends on whether you want to live in a neighborhood in which you feel your children are safe or not.

If you take a job which has a requirement that you MUST live within the city limits, a neighborhood like that is typically VERY expensive to live in. (And yes, CPS does have a residency requirement.)

I don't have children to worry about. I'm also not a public employee, so my question is, how many private employers in Chicago require 'city limits' residency? I can't think of any in Detroit, but then again, this place is mostly a shithole. ;)

The Chamber of Commerce just called. They don't sound happy.

**** shame, since I pay their salaries, at least in part. I live in Oakland County after all, AKA Detroit's bank account. Whoops, I guess that makes me a racist according to the city council. :p

Re: Nice Planet 2012

Don't forget the COLAs. And those figures do NOT include benefits. AIUI, they pay about 3% of their medical expenses under the current plan. I read that about 70% of every dollar spent on eduction in Chicago goes to teacher salaries and benefits. Teachers with 30 years in are retiring with annual pensions in the range of 70-75K. That doesn't leave much left for "luxuries" like computers does it? Not to mention maintenance and rennovation of crumbling schools.

Whatever we do, however, we can't demand any accountability from these fat cat union hacks who care zero about the kids they teach. These union disputes don't pit the unions against the city. They pit the unions against the low and moderate income citizens, who are stuck sending their kids to inferior schools populated by incompetent, greedy teachers who make way more money than they do. Yes, of course, there are many factors which contribute to the difficulty in teaching inner city kids. But the teachers are the only ones who get paid
.

I think I had those calculated in. I know I did when I said they were going to make the $127,000 for a year's equivalent. So I'm thinking the $95k has the COLAs in it.

Completely agree that when you take benefits into account, this is a huge paycheck.

Just don't mention "golf" or "Chicago," otherwise Tingles will be all over your a*s.

I should have recognized what you did. If this isn't a prime example of why public sector unions should be outlawed, I don't know what would be. In addition to the ghastly amount of money these hacks will get, the anxiety to get His Foreignpolicyness re-elected undoubtedly put more pressure on the city to settle than there would otherwise have been. Winners? Hack teachers. Losers? Chicago kids and their parents.

Wouldn't it have been great if Rahm had decertified the union and started over? Remember PATCO? Right, nobody else does either. There are people lining up in Chicago unemployment offices who could easily replace most of these rejects with very little if any training.

No, I said they are making more than senior-level chemical engineers in Chicago. I haven't seen anything like that outside of Chicago.

The citizens are already pay the legal maximum in property taxes.

Also, this: http://www.bestplaces.net/col/?salary=76000&city1=51714000&city2=52743000

And this: http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofliving/costofliving.html (Which indicates about a 3% difference between Chicago and Mpls)

And this: http://www.bankrate.com/calculators/savings/moving-cost-of-living-calculator.aspx (which indicates about 2.2% difference)
Didn't Illinois jack the income tax to pay for (whatever). The teachers need the extra income to keep the same take home pay?????

My sarcasm detector may be malfunctioning, but is this a serious post?

Because I'm pretty sure that affects everyone in the state. And it also doesn't exclude the ridiculous paycheck.

Yes it was, but it would not surprise me that somebody was thinking that when they asked for the town of Joliet as ransom.

Here's a funny musical tribute to the pathetic losers who "enhance" their military accomplishments.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCnzi6L_BsM&feature=player_embedded

It was not unheard of in my day for a gay making his first trip home after basic to "augment" his uniform. Many ribbons are available for sale in the BX, and some guys would just stock up on the way out of town.

The late publisher of the Arizona Republic (Duke Tully) may be a record setter here: for 30 years he claimed to be an Air Force combat pilot, veteran of Korea and Vietnam and a Lt. Colonel. The teensy little problem was he'd never served a minute in the AF! He wove a tapestry of lies that included whoppers about being shot down and winning medals, that got him invited to numerous military functions over the years (at which he would wear his dress uniform).

Re: Nice Planet 2012

One point I would like to make about the Chicago Teacher thing:

Part of the reason for the insanely high pay is the turnover rate within the system.... They can't get teachers to come into the city... And when they do, they bolt for somewhere else within 5 years usually... The best teachers are rarely around after 10 years... That's the main problem with this...

Well, that and everything that makes people not want to work for CPS.
