Wild animals should not be kept as "pets." And local jurisdictions should tighten up whatever applicable ordinances they've got. Frequently the victims of these "pets" aren't the owners, they're neighbors or friends. Take the lady who recently had her face ripped off (literally) by somebody's "pet" chimp (after the moron had given the ape some sort of drug). And that chimp didn't weigh 300 pounds like this bad boy does. I shudder to think of the strength to weight ratio of this ape and the damage he could do to a human without even halfway trying.
Siegfried and Roy had unlimited money for trainers, vets and the whole shootin' match, yet one of their cats came this close to taking out Roy. In their case they are "professionals," with appropriately safe facilities to house the animals. Even so, IIRC, Roy was attacked on stage. What's to stop a 400 tiger from taking a bit out of your grandmother's face? Nothing?
I once rode on an elephant as part of a station promo. The genius who helped me climb aboard suggested I "hold on." This may have been the tamest elephant God ever put on earth, but if she took it into her head that she was "not gonna do it," I'd have been history. She could have turned me into a smudge without even trying.
In the 80's in Houston at a giant indoor flea market, another genius thought it would be a good idea to have a live lion on display as you entered the joint. In the twinkling of an eye, the lion had a little girl's head in his mouth. She survived, thankfully. But talk about your bad judgement.
Many of the big cats a held by morons as pets eventually find their way into disgraceful "canned" hunts, where wanna be "great white hunters" shoot animals that have lost their fear of humans and approach rather than move away. That's another reason to stop people from keeping wild animals as pets.
