You should listen to the full quote. He said you should never call someone the n-word and that doing so would be despicable. He was saying you can't say it as part of a conversation. I honestly can't think of what conversation that would be and in the end it's a failed complaint regardless.

This is a really good book on the subject. Written by a black legal scholar with degrees from Harvard and Yale. Replaced the starred out part with the, ahem, word in question.

India has taken one of the most visible steps backward of any country the last ten plus years.

Though I’m sure 99% of that is because it’s being covered now. I imagine it was probably much better than it was but still miles away from even having a shred of respectability. It’s so gross how they treat women there. (Probably all minorities and poor people.)

India has always been like that. I have a (white, American) coworker who married an Indian woman, and according to him she's no longer on speaking terms with her father because she refused to let him traditionally arrange a marriage to a man within her caste or religious faith.

It's a mix. We have a friend who is an Indian Muslim whose family is liberated from that nonsense. They gave her sister (also in America) sh-t because she married a Muslim guy for love when she could have had a Jewish neurosurgeon from Hopkins. :p

However, her Mom is mystified why our friend is 40 and unmarried. Not angry, just perplexed. It's adorable -- never even enters her pretty little head.

Good friend of mine that I met after moving here hasn't lived in India for 15 years. Still had an arranged marriage and the wedding last October was complete Bollywood.

To be fair she said in an interview she did it to highlight how easy it is to fool people via social media.
