NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

Good point...if this league is to survive...they have to separate from the pair of dinosaurs running the OWHA into the ground!! :o

To whom are you referring?
I thought the CWHL was run by other people?
There is a lot of potential for the league if there were some good business people running the teams and league.
Why do you think Brian Burke is so sought after in the NHL, he is a great business man, and knows the game.

Sadly...the CWHL still comes under the auspicies of the OWHA...and we all know what a well-oiled machine the "O" is!!

Until is breaks away on its own...the CWHL will become another micromanaged tentacle of the twin dinosaurs running the O.

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

Not to throw stones but trying to communicate with the CWHL is basicially a lost cause. We tried to cover the 08-09 championship and it was the day prior to the first game before anyone even contacted us regarding the media form we filled out from their website a month prior. Last season trying to get a schedule from the league or even accurate scores was like pulling teeth and we finally gave up.

Even our contacts at Hockey Canada laugh at the less than successful attempts at public relations put forth by the league.

I am frankly shocked that they managed to get prospective player information out in a timely fashion.

Hopefully they can turn the corner but I am not too optimistic at this point.
:(

Perhaps if Hockey Canada tried to help instead of laughing at them they might turn the corner. I mean wouldn't it be in the best interest of HC to support them & assist in getting the thing off the ground?

I really find it odd that some of you guys have such a totally negative point of view on the OWHA and PWHL. Looking at the under 18 national championships, the composition of the nation U18 and U22 teams, even the national team it seems like Ontario is very successful at producing lots of hockey players at the highest levels of women's hockey.
They also seem to produce large numbers of D1 recruits every year... every organization has its issues and could be better but someone must be doing something right.

As discussed previously, things are going to change in the next couple of years. At least I believe so. Recently, Canada could have sent multiple teams and you might not be able to tell much difference between them. At all the age groups that you have indicated. Foresight is the key. ;)

The OWHA has NOTHING to do with the success of players from Ontario at all. Ontario players are successful despite them.

The success is due to the enormous size and scale of the population which is also quite centrally located, the associated high quality of competition as a result on a consistent basis, the work of a great many excellent, accomplished coaches in developing talent, and the availability of many top-notch hockey schools and training facilities.

The only way they turn a corner is if they get rid of SJS and get the NHL affiliation which is basically out of necessity!!

And yes..trying to communicate with them...I would compare it to having an endoscope procedure...if you dig deep enough...eventually you will find some sh*t!!

And to correct a common CWHL produced fact..The CWHL is NOT player driven..it is ego driven!! It's all about getting paid!! Not about building something credible!

BINGO...you hit the nail right on the head!! In essense the OWHA succeeds despite itself!!

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

To all the Negative Nancys out there....here's the latest:

Dear Prospective CWHL player,
*
Thank you for your interest in playing in the CWHL for the 2010-2011 seasons. We appreciate your*patience as the CWHL transitions towards a professional women’s hockey league.* This is a very exciting time for women's hockey.* This letter is to update you on the next steps that will occur in order to commence our season in October of 2010.

The first step of the CWHL was to hire five General Managers to work directly with League Head office. This has been done and all five (see list below) are very excited to be involved with our league and eager to work hard to ensure a successful 2010-2011 for the players.

CWHL General Managers
Boston**** Paul Hendrickson
Montreal** Christopher Sides
GTA 1***** Sheila Zych
GTA 2**** Jody Katz/ Maria Quinto
GTA 3***** Barb Fisher
*
The league will work directly with the five General Managers for the next step of hiring the head coaches of each respective team. The General Managers and Head Coach will then be tasked with selecting a coaching staff for each team.
*
Please do not forget that the deadline for applications to be a player in the CWHL for the 2010-2011 seasons is July 16th, 2010.*

Players in the Greater Toronto Area
For players in wanting to play on one of the three teams in the Greater Toronto Area, there will be a chance for you to be evaluated by those three coaching staffs on July 27th and July 28th, 2010 (Westwood Arena 8 – 9:30 pm). The evaluation skates are not mandatory, and if you do not participate your name will still be included in the draft, however, it would serve as an excellent opportunity to showcase your skills to the evaluators. You may skate one or both nights, however you must pre-register for the skate by emailing Brenda Andress at cwhled@owha.on.ca and indicate which nights you will be in attendance. The fee for each ice time is $15 which can be paid upon arrival at the rink.

Once the evaluation skate has occurred and players are ranked, a draft for the three Greater Toronto Teams will occur on August 12th, 2010 at 7:00pm (location TBA). This will be the first ever draft in women’s hockey and players, fans and media are encouraged to attend.

The draft will be headlined by each of the three Greater Toronto coaching staffs and General Managers indicating up to five “protected players” that they wish to create the core of their team. A “protected player” must have played in the CWHL once during the last three seasons and must agree to the team that they are being “protected” by. If a team chooses not to protect five players, they will gain the ability to select first in the draft until all teams have five players on their roster. This is to ensure parity for this season and to evenly distribute incoming talent to the CWHL.

Once all teams have five players, an open draft will occur with a lottery indicating who will select first. All players who have submitted player applications for one of the Greater Toronto Teams will be drafted. Being drafted does not ensure a spot on a team; instead it indicates the team that the player is eligible to attend their tryouts. Teams will be comprised of up to a 22 person roster.

Tryouts for the Greater Toronto Teams will be announced by each respective team and will occur in late September (Date TBA)

For any players released from an organization (including Montreal and Boston) or players new to the region who missed the deadline for applications a late September evaluation skate will occur with the three Greater Toronto Area coaching staff in attendance. Another mini-draft will occur for those players.

Players in Boston and Montreal
All players indicating that they wish to play in Montreal or Boston are eligible to attend an open tryout for each team respectively. Players released from three Greater Toronto teams will also be eligible. Montreal will be holding on ice tryouts in late September with dates to be confirmed shortly.

Boston Ice tryouts:
· All preseason skates and tryouts will be held at Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington, MA - the practice home of the Boston Bruins
· Pre-season open skate - Saturday August 21 at 4:00 - 6:00 pm
· Tryouts - September 17, 18, and 19 - all sessions at 4:00 pm

Wow, interesting. I know there was mention of it before, but where is all the money coming from, for these girls to put their lives on hold and to make the commitment. Not being an NN now, just can't understand why this isn't more out there.

If they are so unimportant why do you and the others spend so much time wailing about them? If your statement is correct they must be completely irrelevant.

They have defined and built the environment that the players are developing in and that has NOTHING to do with the fact that there are so many players and so many good players coming out of there?

They ARE irrelevent. The size and the times have passed these two dinosaurs. They need to realize this and pack it in. They serve NO useful purpose other than to micromanage and impose themselves on an organization that has grown and expanded despite these two!! Like I said before...the O has thrived DESPITE the anarchy created by these two!! Leave and watch how fast women's hockey grows in Ontario. Get some leadership that can keep pace with the changing times and meteoric growth of women's hockey in Canada. These two have NOTHING concrete to add to the OWHA.

And that's all I got to say about that...;)

FR took women's hockey and ran with it when no one else would. Now, that being said, she is destroying every ounce of integrity and reputation she has had up until a few years ago.

I have been at AGM's where motions, for the better of the game, have been squashed to the backroom dealings that these two ladies manipulate and instigate. It is all about control and you will not see any improvements in the province of Ontario until changes are made....which...under the current structure, will not happen!! It is all about control. Disagree with them...and you will be shown the door or the situation will be made unbearable for the individual to continue his/her work.

It is really too bad that the organizations in the province don't grow a pair of..you know what....and force a change in direction for the OW!!

THIS!

The OW is worse than irrelevant--if they were merely irrelevant they could be ignored....they are an outright negative influence on the growth of the game.

Are you for real????

They did not build this environment...the population was there.....the coaches who know how to develop are 95% male, and their experience is in boys hockey....the hockey schools and training facilities are also mostly run outside of the system.

The OWHA has done nothing of value for girls hockey since the advent of the Olympics. They are just riding the gravy train.

Once again...you NAILED IT! We can only hope that the CWHL is the first league to separate from the tentacles of the O and become a separate entity under sponsorship of the NHL.

And in saying that......the CW needs to clean house like the OW needs to do! Anticipation is that the NHL will put there own people in place IF they decide this is a gamble worth taking!

Definitely. As much as I detest Bettman, it pains me to have to say he is infinitely more competent and preferable to SJS and the OW Dinos.

Haha...well, at least we know Bettman is making his decisions based on profitability for the owners...although, the only "prifitable" decision he has made in the last 10 years has been expansion...and we now know what the implications were of that!

Honestly..I do believe SJS was trying to "seize" control of the league to further her own agenda..whatever that may be..and to be blunt, I would have more faith in the Stegosaurus and the Brontosaurus at the OW running this league! They should have pushed SJS out in year one as some involved had hoped for....now look at the mess!! But you know...if the NHL thing does pan out...she will again proclaim herself as the "saviour" of Women's Hockey!! How very misguided she is...
