NHL 2024: SLC Puck

I haven't seen Jack Hughes skate around looking lost while being scored upon since his USHL days. Was wholly unimpressed with him when the USNDTP he was on played the Chicago Steel prior to the draft. Just lazy and uninspired and uninvolved every shift he was on the ice. And he was projected (and went) number one!!!

One of these days USA Hockey will learn the lesson of “actually win something before you start talking trash.”

They do this every time. Win a prelim game against someone, start yapping about how great they are and then lose somewhere in the medal round.

Yes, USA Hockey so great they haven’t won a senior men’s tournament since 1996, a gold medal since 1980, and a world championship since 1960 (and really it’s 1933).

Sadly, it’s the same staff next year as this year so they’ll probably have the same result. Or they’ll lose to like the Czechs in the quarterfinals.

Good Lord - they lost in OT (after playing a pretty fantastic game for the most part) after allowing the best opposing player to be wide open in the slot. That's on Guerin?

Look I have no love lost for Guerin and I also hate trash talking, but let's not exaggerate the cause(s).

Seemed like they really needed to ignore all of the fluff going on outside, but they reveled in getting a call from washington.

That *might* have gotten them off to a faster start, and then a better chance to win the game.

And then purge the players who are not willing to hustle 100% of the time- seeing players stop skating is a sign that they are not fully in on the game. And that did result in goals last night.

Maybe do the above in opposite order.

I’m not just talking about last night, and I’m not just talking about Guerin, I’m talking about the last 30-40 years. They haven’t won a damn thing in nearly 30 years. All the talk and the only thing that they have to show is a few silver medals. To paraphrase the great Dominic Toretto: “It doesn’t matter if you lose by an inch or a mile, losing is losing.” At some point, someone in charge needs to actually focus everyone on what actually matters.

He was really bad.

I wasn't trying to sugarcoat the overall lack of gold medals - just don't thing Guerin was the main culprit this time around.

Is Guerin the main culprit for why the US lost last night? No. Is Guerin a culprit of the culture problem in USA Hockey that was a big factor in the US loss last night? Yes.

I was happy Canada won and the best hockey player playing right now got the winning goal. My thrill was heightened by seeing the MAGA hat wearers in the expensive seats behind the US Bench all game.

I hope they left the arena disappointed.

Guerin is a culprit in the U.S. getting 0 PPs, out-shooting Canada, missing 3 or 4 in close scoring chances, and leaving McDavid wide fucking open in the middle of the slot in OT.

You have no problem calling out the players with respect to the US soccer national team, but....

Got it.

Who chose the team? Who chose stars that did not play the entire play, leading to goals?

The first Canadian goal was just confusion about who to cover- but it was hardly an easy shot, I get that. The second one should have been stopped had a player kept skating to cover the pass. The third one was just a debacle letting the best player in the world to have that much space.

So who chose the team? That's who should get most of the blame.

I'll try to make my point clearer because that's not what I'm saying.

In the micro sense of why the US lost last night, yes there is absolutely responsibility to the players, coaches, maybe officials for making key mistakes. Also, the Tkachuks and plenty of others need to learn to STFU some time.

In the macro sense of allowing and possibly encouraging the players to run their mouths and antagonize opponents? That's more of a management issue.

I don't think it's wrong to say something is wrong with the Men's team program at USA Hockey. This result isn't an outlier. There's been so many close losses in knockout round games in the Olympics and World Championships in the last 15 years. So many times they've gone unbeaten in the prelim round only to lose in the quarterfinals. The fact that the US hasn't made it to the finals of the World Championship ever while Germany, Switzerland, and Slovakia have should be alarming. There's been all of this success at the U18 and WJC levels, all this talent that has come through the NTDP and there's been nothing to show for it at the senior level. Something is wrong and that points to management.

Who chose the team that lost in OT while playing toe-to-toe with the best country in the world for the entire game, had one of their best players miss the 2nd and 3rd periods, nearly won the game more than a few times, and lost because the team fell asleep for 2 seconds leaving the best player in the world wide open? That's on freaking Guerin? Are you even reading what you're typing?

cc: JimJ - Guerin isn't responsible for the team running their mouths or getting cocky. And knowing M Tkachuk was hurt Sullivan shouldn't have scratched Connor.

As to overall health of the men's program, Guerin wasn't around for their previous OT losses and the U18 team has done more than enough the past several years.

This is like arguing the Vikings can't win any super bowls because of Bud Grant and Max Winter.

ffs

Thing is, had Brock Nelson hustled to the end if the play, they would have not gone to OT.

Not that it's that big of a deal to me, but if you are ok with just being that close, the team and system is fine. The younger success just won't translate to the adults, even when they are the same players, just older.

My jaw was on the ground when they called that. So ridiculous I could only laugh. I laughed even harder a few minutes later. What a goofy game this is sometimes.

What am I ok with exactly - an OT loss in which they had a legitimate chance to win the gold? Whatever you think of the current decision makers were any of them involved in the last Olympics? Or any of the other previous gold medal losses? And what were the significant roster failures they made iyho?
