NHL 2024: SLC Puck

Why would Meruelo go through the hassle of building a new stadium and running a club when he can simply walk away with over half a billion dollars? It isn't like he's shown any capacity to do so yet.

I think it's just the idea they are entitled to an expansion fee. It just adds to the sliminess of the whole Arizona debacle.

Wings score twice in the last ten minutes, the last one with 1:17 to go, to take it to OT against Montreal and stay in the playoff hunt. Finish it off with the game winner with 25 seconds left.

Detroit now needs one of two scenarios:
Win tomorrow and Philly beats Washington tomorrow
Lose in OT, Philly beats Washington in regulation, and the Pens lose in any fashion on Wednesday

Hopefully the D and goaltending do better than 4/18 regulations shots. But that was very exciting.

After putting that much out tonight- will they have enough to do it again in less than 24 hours? The good thing is even if they get in, there's a 4 day rest. Use it all tomorrow.

The Wild are out of it, but I watch anyway. Sometimes you’re rewarded for it. Tonight was one such occasion. Got to see Kaprisov bank it in off the back of Cam Talbot’s head for goal #45 for the season.

As for some of the proposed Yotes new name- the Golden Eagles is SLC's old minor league team- so that name would harken back to older times. And being a kid who used to be able to see them once a year, I'm 100% for that. Our town's (Idaho Falls) youth hockey teams would annually go to SLC and play their teams, which meant that we got to play on the pro ice and got to see a Golden Eagles game. A real treat for a 10 year old.

As a big fly fisherman, I think something to give tribute to the native Cutthroat trout would be cool. They actually have a thing called the Utah Cutthroat Slam. You register through a state website and pay a fee to enter. Then catch the 4 different species (which requires some travel around the state), submit photos and descriptions and locations, get it certified and get a medallion and certificate. A few guys have managed to do it in 24 hours but it was an ordeal apparently. I know some are not fans of the "singular" type names (e.g. Wild, Kraken, etc.) but Utah Cutthroat would be very cool to me and would provide opportunity for some killer logos and uniforms I think.

Whatever it is, it has to be nature themed. Golden Eagles as MichVandal suggested could be good. Something paying tribute to all the insane geography/geology in that state maybe. I'd love for them to reach out to the tribes of the state and work with them on ideas too.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Sabres fired head coach Don Granato on Tuesday, making him the seventh coach to be ousted during what's grown into an NHL-record 13-season playoff drought.

The move was announced by the team a day after the Sabres closed their season with a 4-2 win at Tampa Bay. They finished with a 39-37-6 record and had been eliminated from playoff contention last week.

Granato completed his third full season in Buffalo after taking over on an interim basis in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic-shortened 2021 season after Ralph Krueger was fired. And the move comes with the 56-year-old Granato still having two seasons left on his contract, which featured an extension that kicked in to start next season.

He finishes with a record of 122-125-27 in Buffalo.

Red Wings win in Montreal in a shoot out, and scored the game tying goal with 3 seconds left in the third, but the Flyers pulled the goalie in a 1-1 game because they needed to win in regulation. Flyers give up the ENG to the Capitols who win the last playoff spot and will face the Rangers in the first round. For the Wings, they needed to beat Washington but didn't so the season ends. Fitting, but also a very disappointing way to see the regular season end.

I want to be upset over the missed calls I saw from the Caps game, but that was two calls out of a lot of games. Games that the Red Wings would have won had they had kept out maybe 5 regular goals against over the season (don't count the open net ones). Saw an interesting video about the Wings yesterday before the games, and it was very interesting. It showed the trends- wins and goals have been improved constantly since Steve got the job. But goals against have been pretty much the same.

Actually, 2 goals against Columbus would have won the one game they needed to get in. Add two to Pitt, and turn the 1-0 loss to the Preds to an 1-0 OT loss. That would be 5 more points and a comfortable entry to the playoffs.

Or even better, a shoot out loss to Florida flipped would have gotten them in by one point.

That's how close the Red Wings are to being back in the playoffs.

They don't need a massive improvement to get in. A #1 goalie and a decent #2 to play would get the one more required win. Or a better D that is less prone to bad turn overs or questionable coverage. If they can manage both, then, yea. Even better, if he can finally put together a back corps as improved as the offense, this teams can win a lot.
