NHL 2021: I Pledge Allegiance to Gritty

I said the series was over when Pasta missed that wide open net in Game 4. Sigh. Congrats Kep and any other Islander fans here. Would LOVE to see you knock off Tampa Bay. I just don't like them for reasons I cannot explain.

The B's were solid, Scarlet, it just wasn't their series. Other than their OT winner it seemed like every bounce just went to us.

I was honestly waiting for both the 15 and 10 min commercials, especially when it got to under 5. The fact that they went SO long w/o stopping was really fun. And thanks to the ENG goals and the TO- it seemed like the last 2 min took longer than the first 18.

After some quick reading, it looks like they have a couple more rules beyond skipping timeouts for a PP, icing, and goals.

There were stoppages at:
15:40 - PP before the timeout window
15:12 - goal before the timeout window
9:18 - offsides; this was the under 14 timeout
9:07 - out of play; would have been the under 10, but a minute hadn’t run since the last timeout.

Then the remaining stoppages were in the last two minutes of the third, where there can’t be any. In the first and second there can’t be any in the last 30 seconds.

So NBCSN had to run two extra breaks postgame, without another game to lead in with. Advertisers can’t have been happy about that.

But I mirror your sentiment. That was about as close to 20 minutes of real time play as I can remember. If every period went that quick we’d be cutting it close to sub 90 minute games.

I think the golden standard of what unstopped, sound hockey can be is still the Hawks/Kings OT period from 5-6 years ago. The period was played in something like 25 minutes of "real" time.

I believe the Isles have 3 MN born players including 1 former Gopher so they get my vote the rest of the way.

They technically have 4, but only 2 are currently playing. Kieffer Bellows (healthy scratch) and Anders Lee (injured) are both out (and both from Edina). Brock Nelson...the greatest current Islander ( ; ) )...and Nick Leddy are also from Minnesota.

Tampa scores on the powerplay, and it's back to a 1-goal game with 53.7 seconds to go.

Come on Isles!!!

Anyone else catch OT last night? A good example of what makes Playoff Hockey suck.

I had to stop watching halfway through the OT period after seeing some pretty blatant penalties not called, capped by the high stick that drew blood. That was a 4 min penalty not called- the blood was immediate, too. Thank God Montreal won given how they were totally screwed by the no calls.

Vegas has been going the whole series getting coddled by the referees, they went through Game 2 without having a penalty called on them.

Unwritten rules and all that, but at some point layer safety has to come into play. It was a baseball swing that knocked him to the ice immediately and it didn't just draw blood, the blood started pouring out.

I also didn't understand the intentional offsides call. It clearly wasn't a situation where they would've wanted a stoppage called and the Montreal player attempted to stay onside.

That was an epic save. Could not believe my eyes when I saw it. The set up was pretty amazing too- imagine being in the slot all by yourself with a few seconds left in the game, and the goalie totally committed to a shot- one deke and a goal for an amazing game tying goal. Only to be saved by another player....

One of the best overall plays I've seen in a while.

Wow. What a move by McDonagh. Cripes.

This reminds me of when Paul Martin came flying across the slot to block a Michigan shot that was headed toward a yawning net late in a 2003 semi.

Yeah, the spin-o-rama was almost as good as the save. Great plays by both players and the forces of good won.

Agreed. My heart sunk when he got the puck on his stick. The spin-o-rama dropped it even further, and then I was stunned (and elated) when it didn't go in. Amazing, heads-up play.

Kepler, so do we just follow the same script now as the rest of the playoffs? Fall behind 2 games to 1, but then take Game 4 at home. Win Game 5 on the road and then close out the series in Game 6? : )

It would be absolutely fitting to close out Nassau in the Stanley Cup Finals... with the Isles skating around Lord Stanley. It has been wayyyyyyyy too long.

Great win tonight. Friday is everything. There are no moral victories now. We belong here, and we belong in the next round.

It's right there. Just take it.
