My thoughts on the Gaborik goal:

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Pick Your Overtime Winners!

20th longest NHL game of all time (54:41 of overtime)
3rd longest for the Caps (longest: Loss to Penguins (79:15, 4th all time))
5th longest for the Rangers (longest: Loss to Canadiens (68:52, 9th all time))
Longest since 5/4/2008 - Stars over Sharks (69:03, 8th all time)
17-19 were all less than a minute longer (54:47, 54:51, and 55:13)
Fun fact: 32 of 46 (69.6%) games that made it to 3 or more OTs were won by the away team.

A tweet isn't long enough for the thought I have regarding this:
http://www.awfulannouncing.com/2012...tml?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

Take what she says, and pretend you're reading about NASCAR in 2001. It's the exact same things that were said about NASCAR when ESPN let FOX, TNT, and NBC win the rights. "It's too regional," "It doesn't translate well to TV," "No one is talking about it on talk radio."

And what has NASCAR become? A multi-billion dollar entertainment experience.

The NHL is almost there. When they finally realized that airing every playoff game nationally had as much if not more ad-value and potential viewers than every team's regular season game combined, they're approaching the big boom that sparked Nascar in the very early 2000's. Sports don't need ESPN, but ESPN certainly realizes that they need sports. They came crawling back to Nascar in 2005* when NBC was trying to go after different sports and really learned that they needed to step up their coverage to be near what FOX had done for the sport.

* after almost killing the Nascar Craftsman Truck Series before their deal in 2002 ended by tape delaying the broadcasts for hours, if not days.

and Paul Coffey.

Sooooo hawt.

Totally interesting article. I've been very impressed with NBC's commitment to the NHL. They've done a great job so far this season and to top it off, they seem to really care about college hockey. If only the NCAA would allow the Frozen Four to be released from that prison I'd be fine with ESPN never covering it.

Based on Bradley-Terry rankings (i.e., KRACH) found here, the updated (after 5/2, super-old KRACH) most likely outcomes are:

West: LAK in 5 (20.0%), PHX in 6 (23.5%)
East: NYR in 5 (36.2%), PHI in 6 (24.1%)

Overall winning probabilities:
West
STL 31.6% - LAK 68.4%
PHX 64.4% - NSH 35.6%

East
NYR 82.3% - WAS 17.7%
PHI 63.4% - NJD 36.6%

As always, KRACH is not a perfect predictive system. In fact, it's not predictive at all; it's retrodictive. Home-ice advantage, momentum, and the like can not be accounted for reliably, so they are ignored.

Remarks: The KRACH used for these predictions is only accurate up to 4/30 (the last three games aren't accounted for). As such, all three series that had games played since then should be closer than they are currently.

Next Round possibilities:
Code:
