Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

But... it's during the Stanley Cup playoffs. Who cares?

This. It's not just USA hockey that takes the "Who cares" attitude, it's American hockey players. Hell, the only reason the Canadians manage better is that they have more talent and get guys like Rick Nash every year because his team blows. Our guys take some time off to recoup after the season. Euros jump on planes and show up to play for two-three more weeks. Good for them. I still don't care.

For that matter, the IIHF doesn't give two farks if we or the Canucks show anyway. The last time it was in America was 1962. 2008 was the first and only time it's ever been in Canada. It's a Euro-centric event. Better to always concentrate on the Olympics.

Exactly. I could care less about this tourney. Come find me when it's the Olympics.

Ok, when was last the time USA Hockey tried to get a bid together for it? It's not like we don't have Arenas available (the Ralph, the Marriucci, the Kohl?). Whether we like or not, this tournament is what it is and if we want to change it then maybe we should be a little more involved. And these tournament also determines Olympic qualification, if we keep sluffing off and Germany, Switzerland, and Latvia start to build up more we could be on the outside looking in come Olympic time.

It's time to start taking this * seriously. Put in a bid to host. Hire a GM that can run the National Team full time. Start telling players if you don't wanna show up to the Worlds when available or you're not going to the Olympics. Let's win some medals!

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Missing an Olympics is pretty farking unrealistic given that we don't care on an annual basis now and we dropped an entire one spot after our 2006 Olympics performance surrounded by our usual dreck in the WC's. We start hovering around 10th, let the rest of us know.

The thing is practically designed so we and Canada don't care, and I wouldn't be the least bit shocked if the reason it's played during playoffs is so the Canadians won't care and it gives Slovakia and other tiny countries a shot at a medal. It's during the Stanley Cup playoffs and it's played during work hours in North America. It's literally not worth our time, and I'm an actual hockey fan.

It is what it is. It is designed to f over the N. American teams. Problem is that we let them. Canada is too arrogant to be effective and the US doesn't care so when we whine the IIHF goes "well you don't care so why should we care what you think?" So instead of being involved in the process, putting in host bids, sending competitive teams with name players, working with TV networks and the NHL and the IIHF to change the time of the tournament, we whine, we moan, we look like idiots and the status quo continues.

Ideally this should've done in the 1980's with the Canada Cup but it wasn't. Now, if everybody came together, we could have something that would work, have a World Cup in September in the non-Olympic even numbered years, the Olympics, and then have a European Championship in the odd years. But if we continue to act like 5 year olds then it's not gonna happen.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

We don't whine or moan. We don't show up, we don't watch, and we don't care. You're complaining because we don't care. Nothing's going to change because we culturally don't give two ****s, so our guys aren't jumping on planes after being eliminated to race to Helsinki, Moscow, Riga, Prague or wherever.

Hell, at least FIBA has the brains to not have a tournament every year to line their coffers, and basketball is a pansy sport compared to deciding whether to play in a tournament with zero publicity in North America after 82-95 hockey games.

We do whine and moan. Every year we get eliminated we all go "it's during the playoffs, nobody cares, we sent a terrible team etc."

Yes the IIHF is dumb for doing this and so is Hockey Canada, USA Hockey, and the NHL for letting them do it. If we all woke up and took up an interest maybe we could change things for the better. But we don't and as other Euro countries get better we are going to lose. It might take 15-20 years but we are going to lose.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Again, call me when we're actually in danger of missing an Olympics. You seriously overrate how much small European countries are going to improve.

It took not medaling for USA basketball to do more then grab a dozen NBA players and say "go forth and conquer." Until something that awful happens, we'll keep blowing off the 6am starts with our mediocre U25 lineups.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

We did almost get relegated to Division 1 in 2010. Other than that we've been alright.

I was impressed that Ovechkin and Semin had their season end in New York, got on a plane, went to Finland and five days later they're playing for Russia in the medal round. Now did Russia play two down for group play or are you allowed to drop and add players during the tournament?

For the 2011 tournament. To miss an Olympics, we have to drop to 10th or lower in their screwy standings, and then not finish 1st-3rd in the qualifier for the Olympics against stalwarts like France and Great Britain. We've never dropped below 7th.

I know how that works. But even with sending our C or D team over we should still never get relegated.

We haven't been alright, we've been average. Since 2000 we've Medaled once, finished 4th twice, nearly been relegated twice, and lose in the quarters every other time. Contrast that to two Silver medals and a 3rd place finish in tournaments where we care. So we just look stupid.

Dwight King cannot be stopped. And neither can the Kings.

Once again: Down Goes Brown.

He sure knows how to hit the ice. Los Angeles is the perfect place for him.

And a nice tackle by Doughty.

He's smart enough to not flail his arms and throw his stick like a lot of other divers though. It's the realistic falling that really sells it and makes more people not even realize he's a Class A diver.

I'll be curious to see how they do against the winner of the eastern conference. The rangers defensive play seems to be costing them physically these days. If they get by NJ, im not sure they'll have enough in the tank to deal with the kings especially considering they are having trouble scoring 5X5.

By the way, when was the lost time an 8 seed steamrolled teams en route to the finals? I can't recall...

The 2005-06 Oilers were an 8 seed in the finals, but they certainly didn't steamroll their opponents like the Kings have.

Side note: in classic "neutral hockey fan" mode, I am finding plenty of reasons to casually start hating every team remaining. That means there's something wrong with me.

I just read through the last page, and I still don't understand why I should care about the World Championships...
