NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

I may be blinded by the broom in my eyes, but I respectfully disagree.

That broom's making it exceptionally painful to watch the Kings.

I was curious, so I looked: the Coyotes had two more regulation wins than the Kings in the regular season, and two more points.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

To be fair, he was turning to play the puck up the ice. It's not like he purposefully turned to get drilled in the back.

I was annoyed that the announcers couldn't make that simple observation.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

That Jeff Carter trade has made a ton of difference.
No surprise there. He's gotta be the most rested player in the playoffs. He did nothing but tank it the whole time he was in Columbus.:(

Don't get me wrong; your observation is clearly correct. And I also understand the Carter's angst stemmed from the betrayal he believed the Flyers were guilty of. The CBJ were pretty much just caught in the crossfire.

At the same time, Carter's "hunger strike" did enormous damage here. He was part of a group of off-season acquisitions that, on paper, should have made the CBJ a playoff contender. Instead, the team imploded and had the worst season in franchise history. Tellingly, the Jackets actually got a little better after he was gone. The phrase "locker room cancer" comes to mind.

To Carter's credit, he mostly kept his mouth shut with the media. But the problem was obvious. The Carter shutdown certainly wasn't limited to his mouth.

So now he's prospering in the playoffs. Credit where credit is due. And yet, Kings fans shouldn't get too comfortable with this player. What happens if he should lock horns with Kings Management? Conflict between players and management can occur on any number of potential issues. If so, will the response be more professional next time? Or should we expect another hunger strike?

The best part of the Jeff Carter trade is that the Kings got rid of Jack Johnson.

If media speculation in the past 2-3 years is to be believed, he was mostly mad about being separated from fellow drinker/womanizer extraordinaire and BFF, Mike Richards.

Problem solved for now, until Carter starts nailing some LA player's wife/gf. ;)

I actually don't have any info on how JJ wound up on the market. Did he have create chemistry issues in LA? If so, maybe the fresh start does both guys some good.

It's way to early to pass judgment, but so far Johnson's time in Columbus has been positive. He seems to want to be here, and the fans have embraced him. Compared to the Carter situation, that's incredibly refreshing. Also, given Johnson's Ann Arbor pedigree, it's a bit of breakthrough on both sides.;)

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Oh I agree fully about the call. However, having reffed in the past, one of the most difficult situations is immediately after your hand goes up. So many things to pay attention to all at once so I understand the call.
I wonder if, had that sequence occurred in a different order, they wouldn't have also called the slash. Don't get me wrong, it's a penalty under most circumstances, but I feel like I've seen similar acts let slide when there's already a delayed penalty because calling two penalties at once is a huge swing. But the back ref (if I'm not mistaken) had already called the slash when the boarding happened, and once Lewis comes up bleeding...
To be fair, he was turning to play the puck up the ice. It's not like he purposefully turned to get drilled in the back.
I wasn't saying he tried to draw the penalty, just that the timing was unfortunate.

:D

And if the speculation is anywhere close to the truth, making a long term investment in the guy becomes pretty questionable. I'm not saying the players have to be choir boys off the ice, but when the off-ice stuff has a huge impact on productivity...

Again, the problem is obvious.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

The impression I have re. JMFJ is that he's just not all that good in his own end and that's why people are happy the Kings got rid of him.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Johnson is brutal in his own end. Staggeringly bad. Copper and Blue last year essentially called him the difference in the Kings-Sharks first round series-

The black hole that is Jack Johnson helped to kill the Kings via "spaghettification." I poked fun at Johnson throughout the series, but the underlying numbers reveal just how weak he was. He has an awful habit of getting caught in no-man's land on a consistent basis -- if Johnson lived on the Korean Peninsula, he would wander into the DMZ three or four times per day. It's not that he makes mistakes in his own zone, it's that he surprises everyone when he shows up in the right place. The Sharks took advantage of Johnson's play and buried him at even strength. The scoring chances do not paint a pretty picture.

Jack Johnson’s so bad at defense if he were an actual Blue Jacket the South would have won the Civil War

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

I think Jack Johnson also doesn't do well when he isn't THE guy. When Doughty came on the scene I think he struggled, and he tended to do better the times Doughty was out.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

OK, I'll be careful to keep my expectations for Jack Johnson low.;)

Truth be told, I don't see much of the LA Kings unless they're in the post-season. I actually remember more about JJ from his days at Michigan than his time with Kings. Appreciate the replies/info.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

1 game for Hanzal, no SD for Doan. No SD for the Morris/Scuderi incident, Shanny agrees with penalty called on ice.

Let the *****ing begin.
