NFL Offseason: The Saints won the Superbowl, and are now Marchin on to the NFL Draft.

Brady Quinn traded to Denver.

Apparently Josh McDaniels enjoys collecting guys whose careers peaked in college.

Quinn may not succeed in the NFL but it is good to get out of Cleveland...Holmgren may turn it around but it will take a few years.

LaDanian Tomlinson signs with the Jets for 2 years, $5 million.

Score a TD and you still win, but if you only get a field goal then the other team gets a shot. Seems like a reasonable compromise.

No matter what system they pick somebody will complain but I agree, this is a reasonable attempt to address the biggest complaint with the current system...at least now the game won't be over as soon as somebody gets to the 30 yard line.

Wonder what this will do relative to Vegas...more potential for overs being hit and possibly fewer 3 point wins in OT.

And here I am to complain...

Why have different rules for the playoffs than the regular season? You have an offense and a defense in football. The defense's job is to stop the offense from scoring. Do your job and then your offense can attempt to score. This is professional football where they guys are getting paid millions of dollars to compete. What this rule change does is make it like Pop Warner where each team should have a shot to win.

If they do make this rule applicable to the regular season, be prepared to see more ties, which is why sudden death OT was first used. If they wanted to make changes, go back to how it was before 1994 and move the kickoff back up to the 35 yard line, or make OT a full 15 minutes and then if they're tied at the end of that, call it a tie.

Man, am I psychic or what?;)

Notice I said they addressed the biggest complaint, I for one am not saying this is the 'right way', just the most reasonable way that solves the current complaint.

I bet your view was one of the arguments in the debate...I don't know what their motivation was but I suspect they don't want the extra time a 15 minute period would require...even if it meant more commercials. If a half of football takes over an hour now, 15 minutes of playoff overtime could take 40+ minutes. That would be a problem I suspect.

Except, there are no scheduled TV timeouts in overtime.

Each team would have timeouts, which they will use at a high rate, there will be more reviews, more measurements...and it isn't known that they wouldn't introduce TV timeouts if they went to a 15 minute non-sudden-death format...we're now talking hypotheticals within a hypothetical but if you are saying that a fixed 15 minute overtime wouldn't extend the length of playoff games to an undesireable amount then we can just disagree.

I like it. IMO, the thought of sudden death ending with a first possession field goal is ridiculous. This is a good compromise - only thing better would be both teams having at least one possession, but that'll never happen due to time constraints.

As an aside, who's one of the NFL talking heads that wants to get rid of the FG completely - is it Ditka? Can't recall.

It also looks like all division games in Week 17 and mostly division games in Week 16.

I have to give the NFL owners credit: They are constantly seeking improvements. They do some stuff I disagree with, but they don't just sit around and complain about change.

Re: NFL Offseason: The Saints won the Superbowl, and are now Marchin on to the NFL Draft.

Just so I understand the new rule, the only time that isn't "sudden death" is the initial possession by the team that receives the opening kick, right?

Once the ball changes hands via punt or turnover, it's sudden death? The game also ends if the defense scores points via TD or Saftey, right?

I think so.

That seems right, and I also heard that if for some crazy reason the team kicking off wants to do an onside kick (unlikely, I know), they could just score a FG for the win. The opportunity to possess the ball is what is the determining factor.

Personally, I hate this new rule. Don't want to lose on the first possession? Play defense. It's that simple.

Re: NFL Offseason: The Saints won the Superbowl, and are now Marchin on to the NFL Draft.

I think they made a bigger mess than the one they tried to fix. IMO if they were interested in tyring to improve OT, they could have done one of two things:

1) Each team is guaranteed 1 possession, and then after that it's sudden death.

2) 4 points to win. Basically, anything more than one field goal is needed to win an OT game.

There was a third option. Just play 10 minutes of OT. Time on the clock is part of the game and for some reason OT changes that, and it probably shouldn't. Both of your suggestions are better than what they came up with though.

Each team isn't guaranteed a possession though, if the first team scores a TD it's over, right?

Correct.

Yeah, misread the original post. Those were alternate options he was bringing up.

Re: NFL Offseason: The Saints won the Superbowl, and are now Marchin on to the NFL Draft.

Under my scenario? No. If the first team scores, the opposing team gets one possession and then they are forced to score a TD.

Also, one amendment to my first suggestion: If the game clock hits 0:00 in OT, and one team has kicked a field goal but not scored again, they win. Example: Colts and Bills go to OT at 13-13. Bills kick a FG in the first possession. No one else scores and OT runs out. Bills win 16-13, even though they didn't score 4+ points in OT.
