NFL Offseason: The Saints won the Superbowl, and are now Marchin on to the NFL Draft.

Re: NFL Offseason: The Saints won the Superbowl, and are now Marchin on to the NFL Draft.

I don't think Wayne is the goat for the INT, but for the dropped TD on 4th down to end the game.

Why can't we just give props to Porter for jumping the route? He took a huge risk on a blitz to jump the route and he was successful. Whose fault is it? Why say its Manning's or Wayne's?

Maybe it can be neither of their fault and just Porter's well calculated risk.

For once you're correct. :D Manning is the goat but really, it was a great play that beat him. That's what determines the champion and it was real fun watching to see who would step up first. I think the problem is that a lot of people are sick of Manning (and Favre) so its fun to gloat a little when they screw up. Well, that and I don't recall a game changing INT so late in a previous Super Bowl, although I haven't seen them all.

How late was the one last year, that the Steelers ran back from the opposite goal line?

End of the first half. Harrison was supposed to blitz on that play but made his own choice to drop back into coverage...a calculated risk much like Porter.

Ok, I didn't remember exactly when it happened. Another huge SB interception, just not at quite as pivotal of a time in the game....

Id say it was still pretty darned pivitol. It was a 14 point swing at the half. Arizona had driven downfield and was within what 5 yds of scoring and making it a close game at half. Granted it didnt come as late and there were later plays that sealed the win (Holmes catch) but it was still a great play.

(But I am a Steelers fan...so there may be some bias)

Since Peyton gets so much credit for calling plays at the line, reading the defensive call, being a 'true field general' etc. it was his call to run a play where the DB said he "knew what was coming".

Now, if they had faked the slant and hit the fade for a TD that would have been a great call...instead they went with a play they had run multiple times before and walked right into the pick.

That is vintage Manning. I don't know if he is too smart, too scared or too dumb but it isn't like this was the first time he's walked off the field after a big loss in which he threw a key int and had that "I have no idea what happened" look on his over-exposed mug.

We all know that some guys have ice water in the veins and some don't...Peyton don't. I'm confident that if that was the third game of the season, against the Browns, he would have checked to a different play and won the game eventually. That is why he isn't the greatest QB ever, he may be the greatest thrower of a football ever, beating out Marino, but he isn't the greatest QB ever as he has already squandered more opportunities than most guys ever get.

My buddy pointed out after The Who were finished that it was like "we just got done watching a 20 minute CSI promo..."

Correct. And don''t think for a minute that that wasn't the idea all along.

I look at it this way. Harrison's INT came right before halftime. There was plenty of football to be played after his pick, and Arizona even took the lead later in the game.

The pick in this Super Bowl essentially iced the game for the Saints. There's the difference.

Oh, and as for big game QB's, Joe Montana, please. 4 Super Bowls, 11 TD's, 0 picks.

My other friend said that it's sad that there's an entire generation that probably was watching that half time show thinking "Hey, that band's playing CSI theme songs" as opposed to seeing CSI and knowing, "Hey, that's The Who"

One of the radio "personalities" pointed out that it was commical that the Who played "We won't get fooled again" just prior to the onside kick :D

Pereira says emphasis on illegal contact "didn't seem logical"
Posted by Mike Florio on February 10, 2010 9:36 PM ET

Several of you have forwarded to us the link to a Super Bowl week Radio Row interview of now-former NFL V.P. of officiating Mike Pereira, who sat down with Mike Felger and Tony Massarotti of 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston.

Among other things, Pereira talked about the renewed emphasis that was placed in the middle of the last decade on the rule regarding illegal contact with receivers. Pereira made it clear that Colts president Bill Polian, a long-time member of the Competition Committee, pushed the issue due to the perception/reality that Patriots defensive backs were manhandling Indianapolis receivers.

Pereira was candid regarding his belief that the change to the application of the rule made little sense. Specifically, he said that the notion that a flag would be thrown and a first down awarded regardless of whether the contact actually generates an advantage for the defensive team "didn't seem logical."

"It was difficult for us," he said. "You always tried to officiate the game advantage-disadvantage. And so it didn't seem logical . . . to me at the time. I probably wouldn't be saying this if I didn't have just four quarters left to go in my career. But it didn't seem logical to me that you would take advantage-disadvantage out of the equation, that just a touch became a foul whether or not it had an affect or not."

Pereira also explained that the spike in illegal-contact calls has since leveled out, with the spike in calls subsiding over time.

But his broader point is an eye-opener. Not only did Pereira make it clear that Polian pushed the "point of emphasis" through the Competition Committee, but Pereira also was refreshingly candid regarding his disagreement with the requirement that any contact with a receiver after five yards mandated a five-yard penalty and an automatic first down.

If you can't beat 'em, rewrite the rules!

Re: NFL Offseason: The Saints won the Superbowl, and are now Marchin on to the NFL Draft.

Nice to see Polian throwing his special teams and offensive line under the bus.

The offensive line and special teams are to blame for the loss, Polian told the Colts' Web site on Wednesday.

"Our offensive line, by our standards, did not have a good game," Polian told NFL.com. "They were outplayed by the Saints' defensive line. Our special teams, in terms of handing the ball -- both in the return game and on the onside kick -- were outplayed by the Saints. Therein lies the result. It had nothing to do with strategy or preparedness or toughness or effort."

The Colts' offensive line has been criticized after a playoff loss in the past. Quarterback Peyton Manning said there were "problems in protection" after a loss to the Steelers in the 2005 AFC divisional round.

Polian said the Super Bowl simply came down to execution.

"There were certain situations throughout the game where we didn't execute -- most notably, the failure to get the first down and run the clock out at the end of the first half after a magnificent goal-line stand and then, of course, the failure to handle the onside kick," Polian told NFL.com. "We had four things we could have done positively on that play. We didn't do any of them. That absolutely changed the game. It went from our getting the ball on their 40-yard line to having them march down for a touchdown. Then, our inability to punch it in from first-and-goal on the 3. Those situations, we did not execute."
It couldn't be that New Orleans was just a better team...

I don't see any mention of Manning's pick-six...if he's going to point fingers that one play hurt them just as much as the others he mentioned, he should be consistent.

If the O-line had given Manning more protection, he wouldn't have thrown the interception. :p

You guys keep missing the point. Ask not what Peyton can do better, ask what the league can do to make him look better.

I hear that in the future, defenses will play with 10 players against all blue and white teams that moved from another city to a location in the midwest, and have horseshoes on their helmets.

With 10, only the 'penny' defense will be allowed against all teams described above. The penny defense is 9 NT's and one DB. In the 4th quarter, Mr. Manning's passing yardage will be doubled and the 9 NT's have to wear a ball and chain so the Colts can get offsides penalties on all 3rd and 5's to avoid interceptions for TD's.

This will be voted in just before the "It ain't over until Peyton's team wins" rule which will further disrupt the start of 60 Minutes.
