NFL 2019-20: The Patriots Are A Terrible 11-3 Team!

The thing is, it's the right thing to do. Where was Golladay drafted? 1st rounders should basically always be O or D line. You can get skill position players later in the draft without much dropoff. A great line makes average QB/RB/WR look good, an average line makes great QB/RB/WR look bad.

I don't see that linemen are better to draft in the first round- they have busts just like every other position. The worst bust of all time was an OL.

I do see that the line is the most important thing to make any O player look good- but that's not the weak area on the team overall. On that note- ONE guy isn't going to change an offensive line- that needs all 5 of them working together. Whereas an amazing defensive lineman can change the game.

The problem for Detroit is that it's a poor year for defensive players at the top of the draft. Unless they could trade down which is easier said than done, a tackle is much better than a wideout or a mid 1st defender at 7

Not even close (I assume you are talking about Tony Mandarich).

Mandarich played six full seasons in the NFL, and was a serviceable offensive lineman. Given the fact that the average NFL career lasts about 3.3 years, he beat the average.

Ryan Leaf, on the other hand, sheesh.

Took a long time for that to happen, since his #1 draft position was based on him doping.

I'd put JaMarcus Russell right behind Leaf. The Patriots worst(jmo)? With the 1st pick in the 1982 draft the Patriots select Kenneth "Game Day" Sims. Know for his half-assed practices he said, "I'll be there on game day". Unfortunately he rarely was.

Don't sleep on Todd Marinovich and Art Schlichter.

I saw a story one time where I think it was Trent Richardson (running back) who was drafted high by Cleveland in the first round and didn't really pan out after his first year or two, who was then traded for a first round pick which Cleveland used to draft Johnny Manziel, who didn't exactly pan out. That was a pretty bad sequence for the Browns.

I don't know if a gambler counts as a bust. Was he railed before or after his career ended?

Schlichther's gambling really got exposed during and after his rookie season, although there were rumors he had a pretty bad problem in college.

Funny thing is, I think he's still a scumbag. I saw a tv show not long ago about him where he convinced some rich widow to hand over all her cash to him.

Con man gonna con. c.f. the GOP since 1968.

Has anybody ever gone first round and never made the squad?

I don't mean somebody who died or had a critical injury or chose another sport (or Law School) or got arrested, but somebody who was in it to win it and healthy who got cut in camp because he was so bad the GM just took his medicine?

Doesn’t look like it’s ever happened for purely talent reasons.

Dimitrius Underwood only lasted one practice in Minnesota before he walked out, but that was due to mental health issues and he still signed with Miami and Dallas later on.

Thanks.

I wonder what the best pick it has happened with was?

Demetrius Underwood, I think am that was his name. The Vikings drafted him first round out of Mich. State, and he flaked out before playing a single down what would have been his first pre-season.

If you're feeling bad about your team, remember the 49ers mortgaged their future to get and spend the #3 pick on a FCS QB.

FCS QBs have had a decent run since 2000.

Kurt Warner - 3 SB appearances
Steve McNair - 1 SB appearance
Rich Gannon - 1 SB appearance
Joe Flacco - 1 SB appearance
Jimmy G - 1 SB appearance

Plus Wentz led the Eagles to their 13-3 regular season their SB year.

If it wasn’t for Mahomes the Big XII would have zero.
