NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

The good news for us Lions fans is that hockey season starts on October 9.

Looks like they'll finish this one with the W. Good to get wins now to try to pad for the playoffs because they inexplicably lose games they shouldn't at the end of the season. I still can't believe the Packers made the playoffs last year. Bears and Lions both choked on applesauce.

Oh, and while I like Olbermann depending on the topic, I do think he has to be very careful with these rants (even though I think he'll receive close to 90% support on this one) because he is burning bridges and not just one to the current commissioner's office, but potentially future holders of said office as well.

Same with Schefter. I rarely see him go into opinion pieces so strongly. I don't blame him one bit here not only because of the topic but also because he was fked by the NFL sources here. Unlike Peter King, he didn't roll over and take it in the ***. Schefter gained a lot of respect in my book today.

Dammit, Trent Dilbert still has a job at ESPN.

btw I wish they did double-headers every Monday. I like the first game being over early and I have no problem skipping the 2nd.

Who cares if it's on a prompter or not? It was fantastic. A lot of people farked this up and something should be done.

He's right on this particular occasion. Typically, I find him to be a pompous asshat who loves the sound of his own voice.

Awful Announcing ‏@awfulannouncing 7m

Chris Berman and Trent Dilfer just praised the Ravens for acting quickly and decisively today. As if the last 7 months did not happen.

They are in the middle of broadcasting an NFL game, it's not the time and place where they'd be allowed to truly speak their minds. They shouldn't have said anything on the subject rather than bringing it up at all.

You know the old saying does apply. Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

Some issues are worth it.

I'm going to disagree a little bit. As usual, Keith saw an opportunity to climb onto the soapbox, and he just doesn't pass those up.

If people want to blast the Ravens and the NFL for how they responded to the charge, I have no problem with that. If they saw the tape before they acted, their initial discipline is shocking. If they didn't see the tape, then their failure to adequately investigate is shocking. Either way they deserve all the scorn heaped upon them.

But K.O. went too far with respect to the prosecutors and judge. In fact, if he was going to call them out, why stop there? Why not demand the immediate resignation of each and every New Jersey legislator who voted on the applicable New Jersey law that permitted Rice to avoid jail? Or the entire Criminal Division of the New Jersey Courts that had to give approval to his diversion into the Rehab program?

As I understand it, New Jersey, like most states, recognizes there are different goals of the criminal justice system. We try to punish offenders. We use the punishment to warn potential offenders. But we also try to rehabilitate. Having a system in which we just automatically lock up people who commit crimes fails to recognize some of the underlying causes of crimes.

Rice applied for, and was accepted into, New Jersey's diversionary program intended for adults, who have committed significant crimes, but are first time offenders and for whom rehabilitation may actually be a better solution than just putting him in a New Jersey prison for two years. http://www.judiciary.state.nj.us/criminal/crpti.htm

Others, outside the prosecutor's office or the judge's chambers, decide whether people like Rice are good candidates. They make the recommendation. The prosecutor has the authority to reject it, and given the potential publicity boon in the Ray Rice case, I'm a bit surprised they didn't take that opportunity. But they also take into account what is best for society, the defendant, the victim, etc...

I don't have any problem at all with how the criminal justice system handled Ray Rice.

I can agree with you on the legislative side of it. If it was handled by them in that fashion, I get it. However, the NFL really needs a house cleaning if they saw the video first. I know people dislike KO, but he nailed most of it.

Also, Mrs. Rice released a statement blaming the media.

I know people are going to lambast her for that as they should. I know it's very hard to break away from someone that has such power over someone else. My wife and I had to counsel her best friend into leaving the father of her second child because he was a raging a-wad that would mentally abuse her. (I still think something happened, but I didn't see anything.) It's very hard sometimes. I just hope Jenay Palmer wakes up and has the courage to do it.

Without an NFL career, or paycheck, he probably won't have quite the same appeal for her going forward.

She is in a bit of a pickle. If she leaves him, then she was clearly a gold-digging you-know-what who only cared about dating a rich, famous athlete. And if she stays, then she's a no-esteem basket case who stays with her abuser.

(not that I agree with either of these assessments, you understand, but that's how it will go down)
