NFL 2010 - Cap & Trade

clearly jimmy got his hands under the ball on what in real time appeared to be a short hop but it was not clearly a catch.

Clear enough to the one judge that could actually see the play rather than the one behind the receiver's back and the replay never showed it wasn't a catch. Like I said that one play doesn't change the entire game because MN had their chances and didn't take advantage so I don't blame the refs, but it's a bad ruling imho.

Re: NFL 2010 - Cap & Trade

Vikes D-Line needs to put more pressure on the QB and they couldn't stop the run in the fourth quarter. Hard to complain about 14 points against the Saints though.

Didn't AP have 12-13 carries in the first half? Against the Saints, you need to keep giving your top gun the ball IMO. They didn't commit to the run in the second half, I think he should have had 25 carries. Percy Harvin was awful and seemingly wasn't making the adjustments that Favre expected (particularly on that play where he broke short when a middle linebacker was covering him). None of the receivers had any separation, just the tight end. Passing game might be pretty weak until Rice is back (when is that?).

Roby was really impressive for the Saints on special teams.

This is something that Childress seems to have a very bad habit of doing. I remember attending a Packers @ Vikings game and AP ripped up the packers in the first half and the vikes had a small lead, Childress only gave him the ball 4 times in the second half and the Packers won by 10...

This game did nothing to harm the owners' push for an 18 game schedule. For anyone who thinks 2 games isn't enough to get the players sharp this is the perfect counter. Look at the quality 4 exhibitions brought us.

I'll take the Vikings Defensive perfomance. As you said, holding NO to 14 points is impressive. I think we saw the D-line wear out a little bit at the end of the game, largely due to the fact that it's the first game of the year. This leads perfectly into your next point. Minnesota should have continued running the football. NO would have tired out, and I think AP would have had a few chances to break something big. At the very least, it would have provided more balance to the offense which very well could have resulted in better drives.

At the end of the day, I was on the optimist side of the fence as a Vikings fan. They have obvious issues offensively, but there were enough flashes (think Shiancoe at the end of the first half and Camarillo in the 4th quarter) to leave me feeling that if Minnesota can rebound at home (where they have been VERY good over the past 2 seasons) they'll be okay. 2-1 heading into the bye isn't the end of the world. Saying that, if they don't have things together by Week 5, they are going to get taken to the woodshed in their October stretch.

Fact of the Day: 4 of the last 9 Super Bowl Champions lost in Week 1.

Re: NFL 2010 - Cap & Trade

Totally one of those rare plays where it tests even the video "evidence." And in this day of being able to see every angle in super slo-mo, the criticism of refs will only grow.

That being said, is every angle that the general TV public sees available to the refs in the peep-curtain?
In previous seasons, I've seen a few games where the announcers mentioned that the refs only had two or three specified angles, but not some of the angles they were showing to the TV audience. That may have changed since then, but I don't know.

Re: NFL 2010 - Cap & Trade

I've always heard the announcers say things along the lines of "These are the same replays the referee is looking at folks."

Re: NFL 2010 - Cap & Trade

My favorite weekend of NFL football is week 1 and the free trial of NFL Sunday Ticket. :D

Day of football... Go!

Re: NFL 2010 - Cap & Trade

Who would people take in a survival league this week? I'm always hesitant to pick road teams, so I ended up with the Giants over Carolina.

Re: NFL 2010 - Cap & Trade

Games of interest to me this weekend.

Early Games:
Denver @ Jacksonville (reported Tebow will play and is 2nd QB)
Detroit @ Chicago (Bears are my team)
Cincinnati @ New England (got my popcorn ready)

Late Games:
Green Bay @ Philadelphia (of direct importance to the Bears)

Other Starts:
Baltimore @ New York Jets (will Rex fail to deliver on the talk)

Re: NFL 2010 - Cap & Trade

We're winning 5 games. At least.

Got my Kelly jersey on, awaiting the awesomeness of the NFL ticket/redzone.

What makes you say that? We got a retread coach who was out tenth choice because no one wanted the job. Capt. Checkdown is still afraid of his own shadow. We got a GM with 0 experience and older than dirt. I don't think CJ Spiller and Jarius Byrd can play all 11 positions on their respective sides of the ball. They've done nothing to prove they will be better.

It's rather difficult to reach a Lions' or Rams' level of suckiness. Despite the Bills' effort to do just that, I think they'll win 5 on just dumb luck/minimal skill.

The Lions actually have some good building blocks with Stafford, Suh and Johnson. The Rams got Bradford and Stephen Jackson. We have.... chicken wings and Spiller. Yee-hah.

I took the G-men and Tennessee for my entries in my survivor pools.
