Bet leads to TV target practice
NEW ORLEANS -- A Louisiana man who bet against the New Orleans Saints has lost his 60-inch high-definition, flat-screen TV to a backyard firing squad, but he also became an Internet star.
Wayne A. Spring told his friends that if New Orleans beat the Washington Redskins on Sunday, anyone who wanted could come to his house and shoot his television.
"I was a Saints fan, but used to be they never could win and I admit I was a fair-weather fan," Spring said on Thursday. "And there was all that 'Who-Datting' going on, online, so I just decided to go against the grain."
Things were looking good until the Saints tied the game and sent it into overtime.
Spring, a nurse who owns a medical staffing company, said as soon as the undefeated Saints kicked the winning field goal, his phone started ringing.
About a dozen Saints fans, toting firearms and a case of beer, showed up at his home in Albany, some 50 miles northwest of New Orleans, and shot up his TV in the back yard.
Spring put the video on YouTube and says it has had over 145,000 hits in three days.
"I was amazed," Spring said. "I've put stuff on YouTube before."
About three years ago, he said, he posted a video of a jet engine on a bicycle, "and it took two years to get 80,000 hits on that one."
After the barrage of gunshots, Spring joked, "I ain't checked on my neighbors. I guess they're all right, but I ain't seen them lately either."
Spring said he actually lives in a fairly isolated area.
Authorities said the TV shooting apparently didn't break any laws.
"But I would say mixing booze and firearms is not a good thing," said Lt. Doug Cain of the Louisiana State Police.
Spring said he would not be betting against the Saints again.
"I'll be watching the game this weekend on a 13-inch black and white set," he said. "I've learned my lesson."
You'd think Wisconsin for this one, but Louisiana also makes sense for this one...

As a Bengals fan, I really wanted to punch the teeth of those Saints fans after hearing who dat over and over. I guess the most ironic superbowl this year would be Who Dey vs Who Dat with halftime show by the who.
Listening to M&M this morning. The day after Opening Night, Mike Greenberg was "analyzing" the Pit-Ten game and it was "Roethlisberger willed them to win," "Roethlisberger is one of the NFL's top quarterbacks," "Roethlisberger won the game." Today it's "Pittsburgh sucks." Hardly a word so far about Roethel-something unless it's pity for getting sacked so often. I know the guy hangs in there and takes his hits and he's probably not 100% right now, but if he can single-handedly win games then you'd think he'd be able to at least play a role in a victory over one of the league's worst teams, right?
The truth is that Big Ben didn't win week one by himself and he didn't lose last night. But be consistent. I do realize, though, that this is just the way it is and the way it'll always be.

cbg, what was the rating on stl-ten?
Can't be any worse than a cincy SB (though close).
Though yes, if the saints are still "and oh", that will boost viewership.
And both Bengals Super Bowls had higher rating than surrounding years, though the presence of the 49ers may have helped that too.
And, if football was watched like baseball, there'd be flat ratings until a spike at halftime, and then flat ratings again. (I think, and someone can feel free to correct me, that the Superbowl generally does pretty well, regardless of who's playing. Also, if the Saints are 18-0, it will be a big draw.)
If my Pats don't make it (and, at this point...), the SB I really really really really want to see is 18-0 Indy vs 18-0 New Orleans. A guaranteed undefeated team, doing so in Miami? I think certain members of the '72 Dolphins may actually try to kill themselves.
Good thoughts. Then perhaps I sit AP or instead the Barbarian. Something tells me the Vikings may try to do everything in their power to resume the running game this week or else face a real tough road in the playoffs.
Report: Benson, LJ to split reps
Cedric Benson, RB CIN
News: NFL Network reports that Bengals RBs Cedric Benson and Larry Johnson will share carries against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Apparently, the Bengals want to ease up on Benson's workload heading into the playoffs.
Analysis: It's a smart move by the Bengals but it's awful for Fantasy owners. But in using some common sense, Benson is a huge reason why the Bengals have gotten to where they're at and isn't about to lose half of his reps to the veteran newcomer. Our hunch is that Benson will still be good for over 20 carries in the game, but with the matchup already difficult it's tough to expect him to be a no-brainer. If you own Benson, consider other elite options only before finalizing your lineup. As for Johnson, consider him a low-end No. 3 Fantasy RB since he might land 10 touches.
