New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

Re: New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

Someone check on Yogi and Whitey while we're at it here, please.

Was just thinking that - something along the line of "please, God, you owe us 2 or 3 extra years of Yogi after this week."

Re: New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

Well, Whitey's pushing 82 and Yogi's 85. We might already be on borrowed time with both of them. :( Especially Whitey, given how he rolled with Mickey (and sometimes Billy Martin) back in the day, and given what Mickey did in his down time.

Re: New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

Worth mentioning that George Steinbrenner was always one of the most generous donors to the Red Sox' yearly appeal for the Jimmy Fund..

Very worth mentioning.

The guy wanted to win, he had the resources and he was good at it. That's kind of the point.

It's stunning that Whitey looks as good as he does considering all those years of boozing.

And yes, RC's sentiment is the same I've got. Let's hope the Hall of Fame sees fit to add him in the next year or so as one of the most intriguing and best owners the game has seen. He bought the Yankees for a few million in 1973 and the team (and cable network) are now worth billions. He's got as checkered a past as anyone could have as an owner. From the constant interference with the team to do things his way, the managerial carousel of the 1980s, the Howie Spira/Dave Winfield stuff to having to defer to the team staff after he was away from baseball because they righted the ship... It's a fascinating story. Hollywood sort of stuff.

Re: New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

I'm not a Yankee fan, but I always admired Steinbrenner because he did what it takes to win. I hate seeing the Pirates and Royals of the world just pocketing the revenue sharing money. I may not have liked him trying to buy it, but I totally understand.

My hearts go out to all Yanks fans.

Re: New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

Steinbrenner, a guy who wanted nothing more than to win, more than profits, more than being liked.
.

He knew how to make a profit also, I heard he put out 500,000 for the Yankees way back when, now worth over a billion and so is the Yes network. Fans may hate him but I'll bet other owners don't mind the money he made for them.

I'm old enough to remember him and Billy Martin, that was great stuff. I had no idea who owned what team but I sure knew who owned the Yankees

And The Boss manages one last win, too: no estate taxes this year.

MLB network claimed that he actually invested $168K of his own money back in 1973. Not a bad investment. Not bad at all. The whole franchise was purchased for $8.8 mil then, net of a couple of parking garages that CBS bought back from the group.

I also heard some nitwit run his mouth about estate taxes on MLB network, and how the Yankees might have to be sold to pay for the taxes, and I wanted to throw my speakers through the wall. Boys, let's get our **** together before we get on the phone, shall we? As RC says, there are no estate taxes in 2010.

Re: New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

Cole wanted to talk to the Yankees and potentially get a deal done. His parents, however, wouldn't allow any discussion to happen.

bizarre.. why was he even in the draft then.

regardless, i still hold the front office accountable for that. you have to be able to know when you arent going to be able to sign a guy. just another blip in a long line of draft blunders.

hopefully they dont regret passing up on anthony ranaudo

Because I don't think that you declare for the MLB draft like you do the NFL or NBA draft. The year you graduate high school, you're in.

Every other team was convinced he was going to go to UCLA. The parents gave off a strong vibe that Gerrit would attend college and not forego his college scholarship.

You don't declare for the draft, everyone born in that year is eligible to be drafted as long as they are a hs senior.

Also, the Yankees knew the risk when they drafted him knowing his commitment was strong. I don't blame the parents at all for not letting the Yankees make their pitch. Rightfully or wrongfully they have the right to make that call, he was a minor.

No Yankee fan should feel butt-hurt over it. They ended up getting the pick back the next year.

very true, i hadnt realized that even though they gave up a pick as compensation for signing teixeira, they were still able to walk away with slade heathcott. they also lost a 2nd round pick (sabathia) and a 3rd round pick (Burnett), while adding a 2nd round pick for failing to sign another 2008 draftee (Biddle)

heathcott is already listed as the 4th best prospect in the system by BA - the list is already pitcher heavy, so maybe that cole for heathcott swap was a good move.

I'm hardly butthurt, it's just a shame that his parents forced him to go to school.

If I'd been offered that kind of money right out of high school to do anything, I wouldn't have gone to college. Screw that.

Big Sox fan here, but yeah even I can't ignore Steinbrenner's impact on baseball and sports. Instead of just running the team as a trophy possession, he realized long ago that if you put money in, you can make a return on your investment 10 times over. All the idiot owners we hear about looking to just squeeze out revenue sharing payments or make a short term profit have been exposed as frauds.

He also for mostly better personified the activist owner. Too many of these guys buy teams and it seems like they don't give a rat's arse about how the team performs. Steinbrenner cared about winning and losing, and that's a quality more owners would be well served to emulate.

Last story about Steinbrenner. A roommate of mine after college - Frat Boy Chuck, was a big time Yankees fan living in Boston. One day (before I knew him) he had found out the Steinbrenner was in town for a Sox-Yanks series, found out where he was staying, and left a message for him at the hotel about how he'd love to chat with Steinbrenner about a career in baseball. The next day, bright and early, who should call the roommate back waking him up from a drunken stuper? George Steinbrenner himself, saying "hello Chuck, I understand you wanted to talk about a career in baseball?" Nice move IMHO.
