New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

Re: New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

Yep, they'll just give up their first round pick. Easier to give that up than Montero, et al.

with the way the yankees draft, its certainly easier to give up that pick instead of montero.

last 10 yankee picks.. 3 are already out of baseball, 1 they didnt sign (cole). 2 arent with the team anymore (griffin/kennedy)

WABC TV is reporting that George Steinbrenner has suffered a massive heart attack and is in a Tampa hospital in "extremely critical condition". Just reported on MLB Radio.

Yeah, I just saw it on Headline News. :(

Re: New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

Multiple sources, including ESPN, are now saying that Mr. Steinbrenner has died.

Re: New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

9 days after his 80th birthday.

George Steinbrenner was the most hated man in baseball for years. At first, it was Yankee fans who couldn't stand him - he wanted to win but he wanted to do it himself and didn't know how. Then it did a 180 in the early 90's after his reinstatement - he was a little more hands off, but still wanted to win and did it right this time. Now it was everyone else's fans who couldn't stand him, but deep down, it was only because they wanted an owner like Steinbrenner, a guy who wanted nothing more than to win, more than profits, more than being liked.

What a terrible week. First Bob, now the Boss.

Re: New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

Dave Winfield is on ESPN right now - I didn't know that Winfield and Steinbrenner had made amends over the years and maybe weren't close friends but were amicable.

They did and Dave has been back to several Old Timers games in recent years. Somehow, George was always able to mend the fences ala Yogi and Winfield.

The last four words certainly didn't help matters.

Sorry to hear about the losses, Yankees fans. :(

They didn't, but it's amazing to see the change in how Yankee fans looked at The Boss between 1990 and 2000. Night and day. From outright loathing (applause greeted the news that he had been banned from baseball during a game at Yankee Stadium) to reverence (the crowd reduced him to tears a few years ago chanting his name).

Worth mentioning that George Steinbrenner was always one of the most generous donors to the Red Sox' yearly appeal for the Jimmy Fund.

I hope the Hall sees it fit to include him next year - for better or for worse he had a tremendous impact on the game as we know it today and even haters tend to grudgingly admit that he was one of the greatest owners the game has seen.

That is pretty awesome.

Always got a big thumbs up from me.

Agreed.

Re: New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

Sad to hear this, and any Red Sox fan who isn't is lying. Certainly the most famous owner in baseball. :(

Re: New York Yankees: Order Has Been Restored To The Universe

Apparently he died at about 6:30 this morning. So by the time the first news got out to the public, he was already gone.
