New York Mets 2011: The Fierce Urgency of Later

Re: New York Mets 2011: The Fierce Urgency of Later

Oliver Perez is pitching in double A for another franchise. By definition, we are light years ahead of prior seasons. ;)

I didn't realize but apparently F!artinez is back up with the big club. Dude's just 22 (it only seems like he's been around since Hoyt Wilhelm). There's still time.

I dunno if Beltran to the Yankees is serious or bloid for "slow week," but does anybody know if the Yankees have anything to offer us, other than vacuuming up some salary?

F Mart has actually done quite well in limited plate appearances too.

And I agree...seems like he has been around forever now and it's hard to imagine he's only 22.

I think his timing is just off -- he seems like he would have been a great PED era player. Sammy Sosa, we hardly knew ya.

Also dillon gee 5 2/3rds innings pitched with a no hitter before freaking Livan Hernandez breaks it up. Still searching...
Outside of the Cubs lack of a WS title in over a century, the Mets no No-No streak has got to be one of the more remarkable in baseball history.

Gotta have a Rheingold when they do throw one.

Going strictly from memory - the Mets batting order as they hit in the bottom of the 9th...

Agee - CF
Swoboda - RF OOPS #1 Rod Gaspar
Boswell - 2B
Kranepool - 1B NOPE! Cleon Jones (at 1B???)
Charles - 3B
Weiss - SS
Grote - C (batting)
R. Taylor - P
C. Jones - LF THIRD STRIKE -- Amos Otis

Later that night, Johnny Podres would win the opener for the S.D. Padres, making it a sweep for the expansion teams!

Dick Selma won the Padres opener. In the AL, the Pilots beat California and the Royals beat the Twins to give all 4 expansion teams wins in their first games.

The Mets did, however, win their final game of 1969.

First the eyes go
Then the hair
Now the memory.

What's next??

Re: New York Mets 2011: The Fierce Urgency of Later

Don't look now, but the all-singles, all-Buffalo Mets have been playing great ball (with the exception of the bullpen, which Collins seems to have given up on). Oh, and Reyes should at least get some consideration for MVP the way he is hitting.

We had a lineup a couple days ago where the first four hitters (Reyes, Turner, Murphy, Beltran) were hitting a combined .310. That leads to runs.

Re: New York Mets 2011: The Fierce Urgency of Later

More of the same, with the Mets having now won twice in a row at Turner (scientists had previously thought this impossible).

Santana's had a rehab setback and may not be back in July. Boo.

Jason Bay had two hits (yay) which brings his average up to about .220.

Gee could have been 8-0 but was shut down during the 5th inning rain delay in a rare example of sensible pitcher development.

Oh and Jose Reyes is good at baseball.

Dillon Gee early leader for NL Rookie of the Year?

Maybe Michael Pineda? 6-4, 2.72 ERA for Seattle. He's the only competitor I see from the pitching side.

On the batting side, there are three guys with double-digit home runs already. I'm thinking that JP Arencibia (Tornto's catcher) might make some noise, but who knows.

Gee is NL, Pineda is AL.

BTW, I've seen Pineda pitch and they should give him the ROY right now, even if he goes 6-14. He's insanely good.

xFIP leaders among NL rookie starters (WAR in parens)

3.27 Beachy, Atl (0.8)
3.73 Collmenter, Arz (1.0)
3.84 Gee, NY (1.0)

xFIP leaders among AL rookie starters (WAR in parens)

3.45 Pineda, Sea (1.9)
3.70 Ogando, Tex (1.6)
3.90 Britton, Bal (1.2)

D'oh. I saw that he was pitching for Seattle and checked the standings and saw that they were in the AL West. I just had a brain fart that the AL / NL Rookie of the Year / Cy Young / MVP were separate.

I suppose that means Toronto's catcher is out of the running, too.

Washington's 2nd baseman (Danny Espinosa) has a 0.759 OPS and 2.4 WAR to go along with the 11 HR that writers like to see.

Wish I'd been able to go to that, I actually saw Pagan play for the Cyclones way back in 2001. Looking at his stats he wasn't dominant at that level, but I remember there being a buzz when he was on base because of how fast he was.
