New York Mets 2011: The Fierce Urgency of Later

Re: New York Mets 2011: The Fierce Urgency of Later

Last night was an interesting display of the performance art that is this Mets season. In the 8th Angel Pagan tried to score the tying run on a short dropped third strike and was tagged out without ever touching home. In the 9th Jose Reyes got doubled off first on a bunt when the second baseman snuck in behind him and he just lounged back to the bag.

The Mets have opened 1-8 at home for the first time since they played in the Polo Grounds.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the significance of "Oh My Head?"

Bay's concussion was caused by an extremely nasty head-first crash into the left field wall. MLB has a highlight behind a dignity pay wall of stupid ads that's not worth linking to.

A four-game winning streak? Crazy.

I remember watched the collision, just didn't realize there was a connection between that injury and the song.

I wasn't referring to a song.

Mets come into DC for the next 3 games. The weather's supposed to be horrible here (if this morning is any gauge, they'll be lucky to get the games in).

I now understand the source of confusion.

Mets would need a sweep against the Nats to pass them in the standings. I'm hopeful, but I just don't see 7 straight wins happening.

Re: New York Mets 2011: The Fierce Urgency of Later

It's a long season. We are going to hit about 50% of the time and pitch well about 50% of the time. So 25% of the time we'll look like a good team (like we just did) and 25% of the time we'll look like a horror (as we did during the losing streak). The reality is we are about the most average team in the history of mediocrity. We'll finish a little short of .500 because we have to play two legitimately good teams a combined 36 times.

Re: New York Mets 2011: The Fierce Urgency of Later

I wouldn't say we looked good tonight, but we did rally late to win a 6th straight (god bless the Irish Hammer), and the Natinals deserve their (perhaps brief) stay in the cellar.

Re: New York Mets 2011: The Fierce Urgency of Later

Jenrry Mejia has a torn ligament in his pitching elbow and it looks like he may need Tommy John surgery.

Everyone say it with me, now: FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU...

Something a bit lighter than yesterday's news: The Platoon Advantage shows us how Jon Matlack begat David Wright.

Wright to DL. In the last month, the following guys have been injured either seriously or semi-seriously:

David Wright (DL)
Ike Davis (DL)
Angel Pagan (DL)
Chris Young (season over)
Carlos Beltran (now back in the lineup)
Jason Bay (not injured yet, but let's face it, it always only a matter of time)

Sounds like par for the course for this team since 2007.

Less so, though, in that they're actually putting injured guys on the DL rather than rushing them back and making them worse.

Oliver Perez is pitching in double A for another franchise. By definition, we are light years ahead of prior seasons. ;)

I didn't realize but apparently F!artinez is back up with the big club. Dude's just 22 (it only seems like he's been around since Hoyt Wilhelm). There's still time.

I dunno if Beltran to the Yankees is serious or bloid for "slow week," but does anybody know if the Yankees have anything to offer us, other than vacuuming up some salary?
