New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

3/36, the gift that keeps on giving.

Not that Lowe has been head over heels better but he's still been much more effective than Ollie and he's only making 4/40 I believe in Atlanta.

Great call Omar:rolleyes:

He wanted to come to NY but the Mets wouldn't budge on their low ball offer and then Atlanta swooped in and got him.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Bye Bye Frenchy.

Traded along with cash to Texas for infielder Joaquin Arias.

Arias was up with the Rangers before just being demoted for Alex Cora.

He had marginal success in limited time. .271 average, 18 runs, 1 SB, and 9 RBIs.

Payroll move by the Mets.

Call it a payroll move if you want; I'm happy to look at it as a "we got rid of a guy who sucks" move.

Congratulations Jeff, you get on base less effectively than a guy who epitomizes the phrase "light-hitting middle infielder".

Per MLB Radio:

Johan Santana: Shoulder surgery necessary. Unsure about his timetable for return, but maybe sometime in 2011.

AA has him starting to throw in the Spring, so maybe it's not quite so dire.

However, this means we go shopping in the off-season. At this point, there are so many holes we may as well just concentrate on what isn't a hole:

SS (Reyes)
3B (Wright)
1B (Ike)
CF (Pagan)
Back of the rotation (Pelf, Dickey, Niese)

But we are going to be carrying a lot of under-productive dollars next year (Ollie, Castillo, Beltran, K-Rod, Johan).

Hopefully the Wilpons are ready to shell out a lot of SNY / Citi money.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Reyes is a certainty, but he's also been very under-productive. His injuries are definitely a concern.

What about Bay? Is he still under contract next year?

And, we've got some good guys in the bullpen. I'm warming up to Takahashi, and Acosta and Dessens haven't been terrible. (Elmer needs to cut down on his fly balls / home runs, though.)

Beltran is slightly under-productive, but his bat is (finally) coming back around, and a full off-season to rehab his knee should improve his bring his fielding back up to where it was. I don't see an issue with him being the full-time CF.

There are rumors Tak wants to go back to Japan; I like him too. Acosta's secondary numbers are horrendous. Elmer has been the glue that holds the pen together but he's not a long term fix. I'm not so worried about the middle relief, though. Omar has, somehow, always been able to land credible middle relief at good prices.

Bay is signed through 2012 with an option year in 2013.

Beltran just took Halladay about 430 feet opposite field, all off his arms, so maybe there's some hope.

Recall Reyes had injuries early, then went 4 full seasons missing no games. I think he'll be fine.

I thought Beltran was batting lefty for that at-bat? So, the homer would be a pull, but it shows his left side is producing again.

So which were the fluke years? The 4 years with no injuries, or the 4 where he barely played half the season?

I could be smoking crack.

We'll see if Reyes bounces back.

I don't know that either is necessarily a fluke. Early on he had recurring leg problems that he alleviated with a specially designed stretching program, and then last year there were reports that he had gotten away from that program and the injuries may have been related to that (and also reports that he switched from Nike to Under Armour sneakers and that that might also have contributed). The thyroid thing at the beginning of this year was really unrelated to the rest, just a freak occurrence. I don't think it's unreasonable to believe that he can get back to playing 150 games a year if he keeps up with the stretching and finds a good groove again.

From John Stewart last night:

Geek points: they should be 38.5 behind.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

The situation will not substantially improve until the Wilpons remove themselves completely from day-to-day operating decisions, preferable by sale, or far less likely by realizing their limitations.

I liked Bobby V. but I don't think the past is the way forward.

I don't know any of the main actors in this scenario well, but it's a good read.

So my wife just called and said, "did you hear you signed Sandy Alomar?"

I was halfway into cardiac arrest when I realized what she meant.
