New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Well now Jason Bay is out with a concussion for a few days so they have a spot for Frenchy in the lineup. It is kind of sad that they need help with hitting more than pitching right now.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

KRod is out of Gen Pop and back in the bullpen. Our next 13 games are against Houston, Pittsburgh and Florida, so if there was ever a time to put together one of those streaks where you look much better than you really are...

Edit: KRod is now put for the season with an injury from taking a poke at his father-in-law. Ladies and gentlemen, your new New York Mets' closer, Pedro Feliciano.

Top 5 pick? With the Os resurgence, I think the Mets are going for Top 3.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

I picked them to go 80-82 back in March and I see no reason to change my opinion.

Should be an interesting off-(loading)-season: Ollie, KO-Rod, Castillo, Frenchy...

Who else should go from the bullpen? Takahashi? Feliciano? I mean, they're both adequate pitchers, but there's no use carrying a lot of lefty specialists.

Also, dumping Blanco wouldn't pain me.

Well we've got Carter batting cleanup tonight. Should be a thrilling series between the trash of the NL.

Feliciano is, at least, a very good lefty specialist, although (admittedly in perhaps too small a sample size to be conclusive) he hasn't done a great job with Chase Utley and Brian McCann, who he figures to see a fair amount of if he stays with the Mets. (He does own Ryan Howard, though.) But the Mets have put a lot of wear and tear on his arm the last three years (led the NL in appearances by a picture in 2008 and 2009, in the lead thus far in 2010), so I guess you'll have to wonder when and how he'll tail off as he gets into his mid-30s. Jesse Orosco was an effective LOOGY until he was 40 or so, but he was also better than Feliciano at his peak.

Takahashi, of course, is a couple of years older than Feliciano. Has the arm strength to be a long reliever or a spot starter if need be, which Feliciano doesn't give you. He's been more effective than Feliciano during his time as a reliever, though a lot of that was early in the year when nobody was familiar with him, so I guess you have to take that for what it's worth.

I think Takahashi's salary is controlled for the next couple of years since he came over from Japan as a minor league free agent, though I'm not completely sure how that works; on the other hand, Perpetual Pedro is a free agent this winter. If some other team makes him a big offer, I think you have to let him walk, but we have one of the GMs who's the most prone to offer too much money for a reliever so I'm not sure whether that'll happen.
Also, dumping Blanco wouldn't pain me.
If you're going to keep either Blanco or Barajas around along with Thole next year, it's gotta be Blanco, no? They've been about the same with the bat (Barajas has been awful awful awful (OPS .586) since May 9th, though he is exceedingly good at making outs), and Blanco is better defensively so if you want somebody to help Thole iron out the wrinkles he's your guy.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Jerry seems to have attached himself to Takahashi (for the remainder of the season, at least, anyways), implying that he's not going to be uprooted at the end of the season. And, his ability to spot start is great. I was coming from the mindset that if he's going to be used as a lefty specialist (which he is occasionally), Feliciano fills that role fairly effectively. Not arguing that both need to be let go, but I also don't think that both need to stay if they're going to be used to fill the same spot on the roster. Also, I didn't realize that Feliciano was used that much. I mean, I knew he had a lot of appearances, but I just didn't realize how many.

With regards to the catcher situation, I was going by the fact that their bats are fairly equivalent and Barajas is four years younger. I thought he would be a little better at establishing continuity. However, looking at more of their career stats (especially defensively), I'm willing to reverse my opinion.

But, there's no doubt in my mind that Perez, Castillo, Francoeur, and KO-Rod need to be gone. That way we can fill the roster with more overpaid washed up ball players.

ETA: Either the angle for the telecast tonight is off by a significant degree, or the umpire is calling a lot of inside strikes for the left-handed hitters. My guess is that the angle is different.

The gizmo that records all the pitches' drops and speeds also shows location.

Hank White serves a purpose, but that purpose can be served by any of 1000 guys with UFA / high minors / dead drunk in the Mexican League, etc.

From the pen, it's easier to say who would you keep. Perpetual Pedro, Tak, Parnell I would bring back for sure. Jenrry was (misused) by Jerry in the pen and I want him up, but I want him up in AAA as a starter. Elmer has great numbers but he's doing it mirrors and regression is a harsh mistress.

But other than getting a real 5-starter, pitching is not where our problem lies. Since the ASG the Mets are hitting .213 with RISP. That is incredibly horrible.

Since the ASG the Mets are hitting .216, full stop. The problem isn't that they can't hit with RISP, the problem is that they can't hit.

(Reyes gets a pass, .323/.350/.466/.816 since the break is only marginally worse than his perfectly good 2008 slash line before all the injuries happened last year. Everyone else... yeesh.)

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Mets won their first road series since 2009 tonight.
Sweeping baltimore and cleveland on the road may not be very impressive, but they do count as "road series" to most people.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Went to Citi today. Absolutely gorgeous. Dickey had a great day.

Anyways, the reason I'm posting, is because I was listening to WFAN 660 on the way from Queens to Troy, and they said that Ollie is set to make $12 MM next season.

HOW?! AND W.T.F?!!

That is all. Carry on.
