New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

You should be able to stubhub close to the game and get cheap tickets easily. By June the place will be half empty.

That's what it's looking like. I'd think they'd be pretty easy to get on the street too. Just waiting to hear back from my buddy in Philly that's from Long Island. Even though he's a Yankees fan, he told me to go to Mets games beacause they're cheaper.

Just waiting to hear from him whether to go to the Phillies series or the Mets series.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Pelfrey has looked so good his last three starts (3 wins and 19 consecutive shut out innings) that you know something awful is about to happen. They should put him in bubble wrap between starts.

Oh, and he leads the team in saves too, just for fun. :p

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

KRod rolls off 3 saves in 3 days. Mets pitching leads the majors in strikeouts and walks.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Pelfrey now 4-0, leading the majors with an ERA of 0.69 and IINM 24 straight scoreless innings. Mets win a rain-shortened game and have climbed into a 3-way tie for 2nd, 1.5 games out. They host LA before The Ultimate Showdown, Part 1 of 6 in Philly next weekend.

So if I can trade a decent 1B to get Pelfrey should I take it? Or is he likely to sputter out?

How good of a 1B are we talking? In his first four starts Pelf has not given up a home run (he shouldn't give up too many since he generally keeps the ball down, but he won't go through the whole season without allowing any), he's benefited from an extremely low BABIP against (.249) which doesn't seem likely to continue if the Mets keep sending Luis Castillo out there at 2B, and has also had an extremely high LOB rate (93.6%) which has nowhere to go but down. Optimistically, you might expect something along the lines of his 2008 numbers, but he's not going to pitch to a 0.69 ERA all year. (Obviously.)

Sandoval, whose been pretty good for me so far.

Pablo Sandoval? I don't think I would deal him for Pelfrey. It's getting to the point where you can't really say that his high batting average is a small sample size fluke anymore. Plus "Kung Fu Panda" is a great nickname.

Rainout, doubleheader tomorrow. The rare single game ticket admission.

Santana at 4, Ollie at 7.

Yeah my pitching needs help but I didn't want to give him up unless it was for someone that would be more solid, which does not seem to be the case.

It may be the case, he looks like he has really put it all together. But on such a small sample size I wouldn't trade away known solid value.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Ummmm.....2008 (his best season) he came on in the second half of the season.

Pelfrey's career splits. His W-L, ERA, and SLG and OPS are a LOT better early, but counter-intuitively his WHIP and K/BB get better as the season goes on.

However, I admit I was repeating something I heard Howie Rose assert without checking it first. It looks to me like the bottom line is Pelfrey is good in April, bad in September, and the other months are a crap shoot. He has missed significantly more time later in the season than earlier.

While that may be what the splits look like, I can't really see (basically) two full seasons in the rotation as evidence of Pelfrey's performance trending during the season, especially for a pitcher who doesn't strike a ton of batters out, gets a lot of ground balls, and depends on his infielders making plays behind him. To me, especially bearing in mind that his K:BB tends to improve as the season goes on, it seems like he suffers from Luis Castillo's old knees breaking down as the season goes by, and Jose Reyes being out of the lineup and replaced by a statue of a retired MLB player named Alex Cora (or, in 2008, wearing down as the season went by).

Of course, if you're going to evaluate what to expect from him as a fantasy player, then you do need to consider how those factors will affect his ERA and WHIP and wins.

Mets record by game interval in 2010:

Game 01-10: 3-7
Game 11-20: 8-2

Huh.

You mean teams have hot streaks and cold streaks throughout a season? That's crazy talk! :p

He's already admitted that he listens to what Howie says.

Howie's last contribution to society was his Game 7 1994 Devils-Rangers GWG call.
