New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Opening Day is come and gone. Adequate pitching by Johan, a nice appearance by Nieve, and a couple gifts of errors by the 1st baseman for the Marlins.

According to the SNY broadcast, the Mets moved to 32-9 on Opening Day. Now if only we had 5 Santanas, our record could be so much better...

In the immortal words of the groundskeepers in the movie Major League, they're still ****ty.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

We're on pace for 162-0:cool:

In all seriousness...I know its just one game, but still a good start for this team and a nice breathe of fresh air for the fans after last year.

Johan looked solid coming off the surgery...David got an opposite field homerun and we are already halfway to the number of opposite field HR's hit by the Mets at Citifield last year.

Bay and Barajas produced...

Couldn't have asked for a better opener....Hopefully they'll keep it up Wednesday.

WOO!! Perfect season!

Pagan's opposite field HR was an inside-the-park version. So, they've already matched the number that actually went over the wall.

Can't wait to make it back to Citi this summer. It was a great park last year, and I can't wait to see the improvements they've made to the Rotunda, the plaque for the "Shea Bridge", etc. that will make it one of the best fan experience parks in the nation.

I went to Citi last year and although it's nice...

It never felt like home to me...I feel like the park is a mix of Citizens Bank, Petco, PNC and I absolutely hate the fact that there is no blue and orange in it. Shea may have been a dump...but it was our dump and it was home.

Citi is an ode to the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Plus i can't stand the park's dimensions but that's a whole nother issue. I dont understand what they were thinking when they designed the place.

I liked Shea and thought it was fine while it was the Mets' home, but I only went once, and it was while my foot was broken, so my thoughts about that stadium may be a little skewed.

I went to Citi twice last season, once after finals and once on a Labor Day super trip. The super trip included visits to Nationals Stadium, Citi, and the new Yankees Stadium in 3 days. There is no doubt in my mind that Citi was easily the class of those 3 and I liked Citi more than Citizens Bank (living in Phila last summer, I went to a number of games). It just seems like Citi could be a great ballpark full of history with awesome amenities, even if it was only ten years older.

Granted, the dimensions are awful. But, I love the stadium itself. Like I said, Shea was fine. But, now that I've experienced Citi, I couldn't imagine going back there.

I have to imagine feeling like home is just something that will come with time. When Shea was built it probably didn't feel like home either, it probably felt like a generic 55,000 seat multipurpose stadium, much like the old stadiums in Philly and Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.

I felt the same way at Citi last season although it is a nice park. I have so many good memories of Shea from the 1999 and 2000 playoff runs that I was sad to see it go.

On another note, was at a bachelor party this weekend. We got a Suite at Target field. I must say, it's a pretty nice place. They did a very nice job with the tiny amount of land they had to work with. It's very, very similar to Pac-bell/AT&T park in San Francisco.

I could ask for them not to bat Jacobs clean-up. :D

But it was a great game, all around. And we weren't the team to make 3 errors in one inning.

Agreed it was nice to be the team that wasn't making all the mistakes for once. Hopefully the sound defense can continue because with this pitching staff and bullpen, it will be needed.

As much as Jacobs struggled yesterday, and he's never going to hit for average, I liked the pick-up. The guy hit 30 homers two years ago and I think 22 last year.

I'll take a platoon with Murphy and him and first base this season.

I think you'll see him get dropped to sixth soon behind Bay and Francouer.

Also, I really think we're going to look back on that Francouer trade in about July and say we finally did something great involving the Braves. I really like the way he plays.

Despite the 30 HR, his overall performance was so poor that the Royals didn't want him back. The ROYALS. You could hit 40 HR and you'd still be a worthless player at 1B if you were a terrible fielder with an OBP hovering around .300. Jacobs is a worse version of Dave Kingman, who was not a valuable baseball player.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Wow. So he hit 30 HRs two years ago. Amazing. He can't hit for average, he can't walk, and honestly his slugging isn't that great even though he can hit the longball.

He's also a butcher in the field.

Glad to know some Mets fan can see the silver lining to a team with a 140 million dollar payroll having a guy hitting clean-up that even the ROYALS didn't want.

I hated the pick-up. Chris Carter is a superior player. Hell, Fernando Tatis is a superior player.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Bay, Frenchy and Wright are all righties. Thole, FMart and Carter didn't make the squad, Beltran and Murphy are on the DL. Hence: Jacobs. I'd almost rather see DMJ in the 5 slot:

3 Wright
4 Bay
5 DMJ
6 Frenchy

But I'd also rather see Pagan than Cora at the top of the order, so I know nothing.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

The lineup right now should be:

1. Pagan CF
2. Castillo 2B
3. Wright 3B
4. Bay LF
5. Carter 1B
6. Francouer RF
7. Barajas C
8. Tejada SS
9. Pitcher

Tejada is a substantial improvement over Cora defensively and there's not much difference between them hitting wise. Pagan is worlds better defensively and offensively than GMJr. Carter is worlds better hitting wise than Jacobs, he's also left-handed.

But no, my team has to be run by morons.

From what the roster is, Tejada in for Cora, and move him toward the bottom of the order and put Pagan on top for Gary Matthews Jr.

I actually like Castillo as a 2-man, particularly when compared to the rest of the lineup.

The key to production is Wright returning to form and Reyes just returning. If both happen they'll be fine; if neither does nothing can save them.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

3-7 through the first 10. Ollie actually looked good tonight, and Francouer has walked about as much in 10 games as he did all last year. Pelfrey looks great; Reyes has been hitting since he returned. I think I just exhausted all our good news.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

At Amazin Avenue there is a sabermetric lynch mob for both him and Omar. I don't really see it with Omar, unless he hired the team trainers.

Have you seen the pitching staff lately? Johan and 4 solid if unspectacular 5th starters is a great way to lose 70% of your games. Manuel deserves to get fired, but the best manager in baseball couldn't win 80 games with this club.

Re: New York Mets 2010: The Magic is... um...

Any tips or ways to get cheap tickets? I may come out for a Twins/Mets game in June.
