New/Rented Movies : Pixar actually made a bad movie

Re: New/Rented Movies : Pixar actually made a bad movie

Hey I fully admit that what I do is illegal (musicwise) and have for quite some time. If Gojackets did the same no one would care :)

Truth be told though I have purchased most of the music I have at one time or another so the artists already got my money once ;)

Honestly, the previous Netflix price was a steal itself. Yes, I know RedBox is only $1, but you have to return the movie the next day (or get charged again) and it doesn't have the massive library Netflix has. Brick-n-mortar places charge somewhere in the neighborhood of $4-5 (last time I checked, anyway, which was a few years ago) on average (new releases/old movies).

So, you only had to see about a movie a week to justify Netflix's previously most expensive option (3 discs out at once). Not difficult to do. It's 90-120 minutes of your time per week. Plus, you could stream just about anywhere.

Now, the cheapest option with both streaming/DVD (1 out at once) is $16. You still only have to watch 3-4 movies in a month, and still can stream just about anywhere. I'm not a fan of the price increase, but this is still a pretty good deal.

Heck, I think I average 2-3 movies a week. Of course, that might change a little, since I'll only get one disc, but now that I am streaming more, it might balance out.

Re: New/Rented Movies : Pixar actually made a bad movie

When I first signed up I did the 3 discs at a time and streaming. I still do it. Its going up to $25/month. But I use the streaming pretty much every day and I get at least 3 discs per week so 9-12 discs per month. I use the discs for a lot of foreign stuff and some of the tv shows that arent on instant yet and a then a new release here and there when a movie I acutally want to watch comes out. Its still seems to be quite a bit cheaper than any other option for the selection I get. If they continue to do price increases and they get a bit out of hand I will go for a cheaper plan. If they can start to increase the instant library a bit more Id consider cutting the discs down to save a bit.

They are massively increasing the streaming, from what I hear. It's part of the reason you have to wait for "new releases" on DVD (28 days wait, IIRC). It's to get more streaming, faster. And I heard about some deal with the "Mad Men" series which is blockbuster (again, IIRC, it's exclusive streaming?). They want to be the only player that matters in the long run. Could be good, could be bad.

I saw Friends With Benefits tonight. It was surprisingly good. Fairly predictable....but there were lots of really funny ongoing jokes and things that made it enjoyable.

Re: New/Rented Movies : Pixar actually made a bad movie

Netflix thought that streaming would put an end to dvd rentals and that didnt happen so here comes price hike

I call bull*hit. First of all, how could you possibly know this was their intention? And two, if they wouldn't offer their full library on streaming never mind Blu-Ray quality they were morons to believe streaming would replace rentals. I didn't drop streaming because of the price, I dropped it because I don't have the time to sit around watching full seasons in a time frame to justify the cost and their streaming movie catalog is horse*hit.

If Netflix actually put newer movies on streaming there would be no need for DVD rental. I hate renting DVDs, which is why I don't use that part of their service.

I'd pay $15 a month to be able to stream all movies, including the just released on DVD ones. But I am sure the movie companies don't want that. They would lose out on DVD sales.

That's my understanding of the deal with Netflix/studios. Netflix will get more/newer movies on streaming, if they wait a couple weeks before putting new releases on DVD (so studios theoretically wouldn't lose out on DVD sales).

Here's a quote from a yahoo article.

"Why the changes? Last November, when we launched our $7.99 unlimited streaming plan, DVDs by mail was treated as a $2 add on to our unlimited streaming plan. At the time, we didn't anticipate offering DVD only plans. Since then we have realized that there is still a very large continuing demand for DVDs both from our existing members as well as non-members"

Everything I've read...leads to the fact that they believed with the streaming options, people would order fewer DVDs. Streaming is more profitable for them.

So then they were short-sighted.

Yes and no. I think they over-estimated how many people would stream (older people don't necessarily have a gaming system). That would just leave the computer, so you end up watching it on your monitor, or take the time to hook it up to your tv. There's your DVDers.* I also think that Netflix thought they would complete the transition from having to go to the store and rent to press a button on your remote in a matter of a few years. I admit I didn't think Netflix would take off as a company. I thought too many discs would be damaged, given the envelope they are sent in.

*Along with people who want to watch movies that are not available to stream. However, that is not all Netflix's fault. I've heard some studios are a beech to work with on that subject.

Captain America - Good but I think it should have been two separate movies. First one would have been up to the rescue at the camp and the Captain becoming more than a visual hero. Second is him defeating Red Skull and being encased in ice.

Oops spoiler, but he gets frozen in ice. It's in the trailers and you see it at the START of the movie. The editor should have been shot for that. Takes away much of the emotional impact of his later act.

So, Shawshank Redemption is on. This is probably the 3rd/4th time I've seen it. I still don't get the OMGBESTMOVIEEVER hype. It's a solid movie, worth repeat viewing, but it just lacks a certain "hook" factor for me. Can't explain it. I can't put it in a Top 10, maybe even Top 50. Top 100? Sure, I'd consider that. Consider.

Input?

I wish I could say that Brenthoven argued the good argument and we let him be. I wish I could. But the USCHO Cafe is no fairy tale.

None of you have explained WHY it's a top 10, top 5 movie (to you, anyway). I never said it was bad. It's very solid. I just don't get all the hype and worship. ;)
