New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Oh, Mel Gibson...

The man that invented the word "sugartits" is at it again. Honestly, the AVClub people bring up a good idea: Mel needs a box set. Or some other way to catalogue his obsene/racist/profane tirades. He goes in some crazy directions that are unintentionally hilarious, in a dark sort of way, and his epic profane wordplay must be preserved.

I thought I read yesterday that his new movie The Beaver, which is supposed to be released soon, has been shelved. Nice going Mel. What a colossal asswipe.

I saw The A-Team over the weekend. It was surprisingly entertaining.

Well, Oksana Grigorieva has terrible taste in men, but she has a very sexy voice.

But, "my kidneys and my liver"?

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Finally got around to my Rogers/Astaire movie blitz.

Film 1 - Astaire/Rogers

Flying Down To Rio - Starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers (1933)

I put starring Fred and Ginger but unlike the rest of their films they are in supporting roles in this their first film together. Part of the fun of this film is it is "pre-code" so there is more innuendo and a little more skin. ;)

There is some famous choreography (dance numbers) involving planes and some pretty cool shots of older planes if you're into that sort of thing.

Ginger's wardrobe for the film is pretty interesting. I've grown to like the styles of the 30's and 40's since I started watching old movies.

The movie stars Dolores Del Rio and Gene Raymond in a love triangle of sorts. Your typical romantic comedy flair. The show is stolen by the Fred and Ginger dance number to a song called "The Carioca". I found this blurb about the dance:
While the song has become a jazz standard, the dance did not have longevity. Following the success of Flying Down to Rio, an attempt was made to propagate it as a new ballroom dance, without much success. It was a mixture of Samba, Maxixe, Foxtrot and Rumba. The distinctive feature of the dance – at least as portrayed in the movie – was that it was to be danced with the partners' foreheads touching.

The touching foreheads thing was unique. First time I ever seen/hear of that.

It's time for MEN to take back Hollywood! :D

I am stoked for this movie...and I'm not a man *checks*...definitely not.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I'm beginning to think that I'll go to this movie, provided it's with some friends, and after hitting a local watering hole. That should enhance how awesomely bad this movie will be. :)

Clever marketing idea there. Put it right up against a really girly movie, and throw down the gauntlet to guys. Should do well for both movies, as well, I really doubt the crowds coming out for EPL would be wanting to see the Expendables as well.

Hell, I'm sure it would be great to watch at old theature were you can hear the sounds of glass bottles rolling on the floor. ;) :D

Sometimes bad movies are the best movies.

Oh, the memories come flooding back! ;)

Or you could:

1. Flask it.
2. Wait until it hits one of the second-run theaters that also serve food/booze (we have 1-2, I think, around here).

Steve: hence my phrasing "awesomely bad." ;)

True, but there is just something about the sound of a glass bottle rolling down the ramp during a bit of the dialog to hear it go crash against a wall in the front.

Too bad it's a summer movie, then. Harder to sneak stuff in.

I have to be honest, I saw that Gene Hackman/Sharon Stone/DiCaprio western crapfest in the theaters. BUT, it was only because we were all drunk. And it was still horrible. I can't even remember what it was called. Redemption something or other? :o

There are two first run theaters (St. Louis Park and St. Michael) I know of that have full bars and I am pretty sure there are more :D

I would see the movie anyways, but now I HAVE BEEN CHALLENGED! I will see it twice ;)

The Quick and the Dead, I think - a remake using the same title as the original. I saw it in the theater, too. I remember about two minutes of that movie. It couldn't have been very good.

Rather than sneak in the alcohol, get a few buddies to go see it at the Vali-Hi drive-in in Woodbury. They'll let you bring in whatever, and you get three movies for $8 or 9. My buddies and I used to go there with a couple coolers, one for drinks and the other full of grilling supplies. And that place has the best movie popcorn ever...the greasiest, butteriest popcorn ever.

That was it. Horrid movie. Not even bad enough to be good.

Not even close.

Only good scene in that movie is when Sharon Stone wakes up in the store room wearing a sheet, and only barely.

Which is actually too bad, as it had a great cast, other than Stone.
