Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

So their comic-book origin is untouchable?

Well, having some of the original comics (the Eastman and Laird ones, IIRC), the TMNT were quite a bit darker and menacing than the more popular version everyone knows about. I prefer the former to the latter. But aliens? Come on, that's just too much.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

That's the same as saying Superman was a product of a nuclear test gone bad... It just doesn't mesh..

So only in his case being "alien" fits, amiright? Goddman sewer turtles going Machio ruined everything.

You don't mess with the origin. You can tweak it a little, but not a lot (see: Batman). The basics remain the same.

Just trolling the, "sacrilege" as it pertains to a comic book. I get it though. :)

I'm not all TMNT RULZ YO OMG! But I get the origin argument. And you're too smart not to get it. :p

When it comes to origins of something that millions of fanboys love, you mess with it at your own peril. I would accept the ooze being of Alien origin, but I would be out there marching with the torches and pitchforks if the Turtles were from the Planet Shell and everybody there is a Turtle-like being.

This Is 40

It had its moments. If it were about 30-45 minutes shorter (it's about 2:15 in length), then I'd guess it'd be a great movie. However, it was too drawn out. Between beating some lines to death, and dramatic/awkward pauses, it hurt the movie. I expected a crap movie, btw, and was pleasantly surprised, if that means anything. It was watchable. I just feel that it didn't come close to its potential.

About Cherry

18YO girl decides to move to SF to escape her crappy home life, and starts an adult film career, and meets people with different motives behind their actions. bbdl had mentioned this movie (I dunno if he had/has seen it yet) to me, and thought I should give it a look. I admit, it looked intriguing. And it was intriguing. As in, how long can this stretch go without anything happening? My God it was slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww and borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring. The 1-2 "messages"/purposes of the movie were as subtle as a sledgehammer to the face, too.

My friend and I were basically MST3King the movie, just to make it interesting and add some humor to this bland piece of tripe.

The Double Hour ("La doppia ora")

Italian film about a former cop turned security guard (and widower to boot) that seems to have met his match during a speed-dating session. Questions arise during character development about the randomness of their meeting, although it was somewhat predictable. Solid acting and a good premise with a non-Hollywood ending that makes you question if you should feel happy for either of the two main characters or not. 3.5/5.

Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai
Forest Whitaker plays a hitman who styles his life after the samurai lifestyle. I really liked this movie quite a bit. It had a deliberate slow pace to it, methodical. Of course, having RZA's hand in it (he of the rap group the Wu-Tang Clan) added to the movie, as the Wu-Tang are big into the martial arts movies/culture (if you couldn't tell by the name of the group  ). Lots of Akira Kurosawa (legendary Japanese director, I highly recommend his movies) references in the movie, too.

4 Assassins
The title says it all. Four assassins sit down for a dinner, and discuss the true costs of their jobs. How the movie is shot/etc is very similar to Reservoir Dogs, as most of the movie takes place in the hotel suite where they are located. Not much action at all, it's mostly suspenseful dialogue and such. I liked it, but it wasn't quite as good as Ghost Dog.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I finally saw Walk the Line last night. Wow, I liked it much better than I anticipated.

And I went to see Man of Steel today. It's a good origin-story movie. The critics thought to little of it, on average, and the die-hards think to much of it. If you're the sort to avoid theaters, do yourself a favor if you decide to watch it, and make sure to do so in hi-def.
