Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I knew that this documentary existed, but I hadn't ever gotten to it.

This morning I watched parts 1-4 of 8. Very well put together and riveting.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

New Star Trek. Awesome.

I wouldn't go that far.

This was just another Hollywood shoot-em-up. I think more extras were killed in this movie than in all of the previous Star Trek movies combined. The other thing about Star Trek is that there's always some point to be made. Save the whales, getting old isn't so bad if you have your friends around you, sometimes you need to reconcile with your enemies, etc. etc. This movie had noting to say.

The ending was obvious. I liked some of the references to the previous movies, but it became a bit heavy-handed by the time of Spock's scream. That was just plain hokey. Bones was great: I'm a doctor not a (fill in the blank). But he was strictly comic relief and not much else. Too little Scotty, too much Chekhov.

Cumberbatch didn't seem to be the villain he was supposed to be. And if you weren't familiar with the back story, you wouldn't know that. The female physicist (who I won't name...spoilers) was underutilized and only seemed to be a plot mechanism - and a way to show a woman in her underwear in the trailer. Admiral Robocop wasn't nasty enough. He needed to be more "You can't handle the truth!" And a blue eyed Klingon? C'mon.

So overall a good movie if you don't like the original Star Trek. An OK movie if you do.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Yeah I read reviews from some Trekkies...they were not pleased. Movie sounds more like Star Wars than Star Trek and the twist sounds lame. (it was spoiled for me) People seem really angry about the misuse of Bones and the terrible Klingons

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Watched "Ip Man" and "Ip Man 2" today. Movies about Bruce Lee's teacher's life. Average movies, although obviously not really accurate. I liked the first better than the second, as the second was much more cliched.

Hyde Park On Hudson

About one of FDR's affairs, sorta. King/Queen of England visit, and one of his mistresses tells the story about that, and her affair with FDR. The characters were great, the story was so bland. Honestly, the most interesting part of the actual story involved whether or not the Royal Couple would eat hot dogs at a picnic. Yep. However, Bill Murray (FDR) and the guy who played Bertie were outstanding, with a special nod to the guy who played Bertie. You really were involved with all Bertie's faults and strengths as a person (not just a King).

Parker

Average movie of it's type.

I like Statham and he does his usual and plays his typical character.

Biggest gripe is J-Lo and her character. Reminiscent of the blonde stripper from Under Siege although not quite that bad. Bad writing and she really can't act.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I still find it hilarious that Statham is currently a super-tough action movie guy, and I still think his best role was not that type: Turkish in "Snatch."

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I saw Fast and Furious 6 because it was dreary out and I gotta say that movie was a heckuva lot of fun. :)

I've heard many a good review, a movie to take it for what it is, but I just can't give it my money on principle.

You may disagree, but I know you understand. :)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Three Colors - Blue. The first of the French trilogy (to be followed by White and Red) by Krzysztof Kieślowski and starting Juliette Binoche. Her character struggles with life after she survives a car crash that kills her husband and daughter, and has many themes running throughout set with the backdrop of the formation of the European union. I really enjoyed it and didn't find the "artsiness" to be too heavy-handed nor contrived. Look forward to the next two.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I normally would not have either, but pickings were slim. I wasnt going to pay for Star Trek 2 Part Deux ;)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I'm a huge Trek fan and I loved the new one. I don't know why they have their panties in a wad. It was a fantastic movie.

We saw it last night and couldn't agree more. Cumberbatch was no Montalban.

You missed the whole parallel universe thing. That's what makes it fun. Great film.

50 Dead Men Walking

About an Brit recruiting an IRA guy for spying/info. Pretty good, supposedly based on a true story, although the main character on which it's based (the IRA guy) disowned it. Fact or fiction, I enjoyed it. Fairly balanced on the hate for the Brits/Irish in this, also. Shows the good and the bad. Rose McGowan isn't even bad in her small role. Yeah, I know!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Might have been a great movie, but wasn't great Star Trek.

This seems to be the sentiment I hear as well. I also heard it is the typical JJ Abrams mess where there is a whole lot of crap thrown at the wall and many of the conclusions seem completely off :D

How will they remake Search For Spock if he didn't die and then have to be brought back because of the nerd rage? :D

There is more action in this trailer than in all the other Superman films combined :D Apparently Fandango has reported that Man of Steel is selling more tickets on their site than any movie this year

And for you Scooby, since you were once a minion of Zod :D
