Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I finally watched Skyfall last night. I thought it was very good, but it did start a bit slow, in my opinion. By the end of the movie, I didn't care that it started slow because it worked. The last segment of the movie, in Scotland, was great; I liked the glimpse into Bond's past that it gave. Bardem made a great villain, as expected. I really like these new Daniel Craig Bond movies....well, Quantum of Solace wasn't good, but the other 2 have been great.

Two things I hated about the whole Scotland scene:
1. There was a transition somewhere where it was the middle of the day, and then boom, it was the middle of the night. Made no sense whatsoever.
2. Absolutely no side effects of spending several minutes in the water underneath the ice in a frozen lake? He just shows up at the house, nearly dry and perfectly healthy?

Yeah, I get that's it's Bond we're talking about. But come on, that's not even making an effort.

Switching gears..

The Avengers - Awesome. Finally saw it on Blu-Ray and while I don't think it's the best superhero movie ever, it's right up there. Very, very well done. Except Ruffalo - that' guy couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.

Iron Man 3 (3D) - Saw it a week ago and I'm still bitter that my $11 ended up in the hands of anyone who had anything to do with that movie. A nearly complete waste of time. The only redeeming quality was Ben Kingsley's performance (to be expected) but the rest was lazy Hollywood drivel. Iron Man 1 was fantastic, but 2 and 3 were crap.

Baader Meinhof Complex

German movie about the terrorist group Red Army Faction in West Germany in the 60s-70s. Obviously, I had no clue about that history, so this movie definitely kept my interest throughout. It was well done, showing both sympathies and disdain for the terrorists and their victims/targets. Would definitely recommend watching it. Plus, Bruno Ganz is in it. That was a nice bonus (I didn't know that, going in)

New Star Trek. Awesome.
Agreed.
I'm really looking forward to this. Loved the first one.

Probably need to see it this weekend.
I would highly advise that you do see it, before you have the whole plot kind of spoiled for you. Not that its not a great take on the old storyline they used, but its nice to get that surprise.

New Star Trek. Awesome.

I liked it, not nearly as much as the first one. Benedict Cumberbatch did not have nearly the screen time he should have had, given his character. Without giving too much away, it's also weak sauce that he's essentially the henchman in this rather than the heavy.

Meh. He wasn't the henchmen as much as Bane (Dark Knight) was. That was a disaster compared to this.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I'm really excited for the new Jaden Smith movie.

Said no one, ever.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Really wish the Superman reboot was available this weekend, but the family will settle for IM3 or ST on Monday if the weather holds true to being crappy.

I was ten when the Christopher Reeves edition opened and it was such an event. Our entire family went, the theater was packed and it was quite the experience. Even my dad talks about that to this day. Although he had to bring homemade popcorn in a brown paper bag.:D

The new Star Trek...

Enjoyed it, but I wish they had somehow had a cameo of a blue police call box in one of the London scenes.

If you're going to mess with the timeline, why not.....

The film was a bit predictable in the last hour or so.

Bloody Sunday

Newer movie about the Ireland massacre. Great movie. Placed some blame on both sides before the event, and then placed most/all blame on British after the event. It gets you emotionally involved (was filmed only with hand held cameras) and made you see both sides of the story. Normally, I hate "shaky camera" but this movie does it well. Anxious to see Sunday Bloody Sunday now.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

So, I (along with my wife and kid) may be one of the only people who hadn't seen The Anchorman. Started watching it tonight and it joins The Big Lebowski & Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as two of the only movies that we've ever not made it through the first half hour of.

It wasn't funny. In any way shape or form. Dumb.

So we got to the second film of our planned double feature a bit ahead of schedule - Django Unchained. Loved every moment of this. Jamie Foxx was great and loved the German. Classic Quentin and succeeds where Man With the Iron Fists failed (I know that Q didn't direct it, but he was involved and I just saw it) - character development and memorable characters.

I'll be buying that one when the movie store sells them off.

Now, the 14yo going on 22yo boy has talked me into The Hangover - which he hasn't seen yet - for our third, actually second movie. I've only seen it the one time, so am looking forward to it again.

Wait... You couldn't get into The Big Lebowski? You are out of your element, Gurt.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Watched The Impossible about the 2004 SE Asia tsunami with Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts and based upon a true story. Very good and quite gut-wrenching. Not sure how true to the actual story it was, but even if only partially so it makes you thankful for your family. The recreation of what it must have been like to be swept away in a sh*tstorm of current with your body torn to shreds was very impressive. The logistics of recovery and reconnecting afterwards had to be mind-boggling.

This one also hit on a personal level. We were in Thailand just two weeks prior, including spending five days at our condo that was destroyed. My wife lost a very good friend, her father lost as well. Our house was re-built within 18 months, although only my wife and kids have been back since.

Mama

meh

Not bad, but not particularly memorable either.

God I hated Anchorman...I fell asleep the first time I tried watching it and almost did the second time as well. Minus a few parts (the rumble between the news crews) the movie was just annoying stupid.

Lebowski I need to give another chance...Hitchhiker's Guide was just awful. I never understood why the dorks love it so much. (any version, book included) And I say that as a huge dork :)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Do not speak ill of Anchorman.

And I, too, had to watch Big Lebowski a couple times to fully appreciate it. It really grew on me. I love it now.

Watched it tonight.

Whew! Can't even imagine. The tension was palpable. Feel like I've been through the wringer.

Very good movie. Performances were great and all of the little human moments were spot on and touching.

Watts was better than Lawrence.

I think that maybe this movie resonates partially because of how much we all saw this on TV as it happened. In this day and age, it really is a small world.

In addition, many of us have taken these kind of trips (obviously Slap Shot has taken them right in the area) and can place ourselves in those shoes. I was in the Caribbean this past Christmas and my bed was about 30 yards from the ocean. I realize that the Caribbean is not a seismic hotbed (although BIG quakes can happen - Haiti), but having been and stayed and played that close, I realize how utterly ****ed I and anyone else in that situation would be.

Just came down to luck as to whether you survive the initial wave(s).

This one's gonna stick for a bit.
