Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Watched Jack Reacher for my in flight movie from cabo to Atlanta. Pretty good, I know those who read the books hated Tom Cruise in that role but I thought he did fine. That whole interaction between the girl at the bar and what proceed with her "brothers" was great. Pretty good story. In other news, episodes of Californication were available for free. That seemed very odd to me but I watched one anyway with my time left after the movie was over...

Django Unchained.

Uh...................what the hell? Man, that was frantic. Loved it, though. And the "hood" scene? My God, MNS/Dillo/I had to replay it. Friggin' brilliant, very Blazing Saddles/Mel Brooks-like. Darn near in tears after that scene.

I've had (500) Days of Summer from Netflix since January. Finally watched it and liked it. Cute and quirky. Slumdog Millionaire is coming next, so I should get to that around... September.

Regarding Life of Pi.. I just don't see how the book could translate well to a movie. I did like the book, though. Not sure if I want to bother to see it.

Killer Joe. What. The. ****.

1. How did this get made into movie?
2. How did they get Matthew McConaughey to be in this movie?

What. The. ****.

The movie itself was meh. McConaughey was outstanding.

From a neutral perspective: it's one of those indie/almost artsy "director has a vision" movies, plus it got some more traction due to some of the racier things in the movie (therefore garnering the dreaded NC-17). MM probably did it because he liked the role (and needed the paycheck).

Yeah, that was a really fun movie to watch. And the hood scene was hilarious.

On a different note: I for one really enjoyed Life of Pi.

I just finished this last night. The hood scene was fantastic. Overall, it was a good movie, though a little uneven (from what I was expecting) moving from the funny parts to the serious parts.

Zero Dark Thirty

I liked this rather than loved it.

Was a bit (quite a bit) long and the raid almost seemed like a separate movie as we don't meet seal team 6 till the very end.

Also - didn't like how they made a point of showing the one seal appearing to be bothered by the dead UBL associates. I don't buy it as these guys have seen all that before and the corpses were those of terrorists, so **** 'em.

I think it could have been about 40 minutes shorter.

Iron Man 3 opened this weekend. I really want to see it. I did not see Iron Man 2, though. I'm wondering if I need to in order to get what happens in Iron Man 3. Thoughts?

I've not seeen Iron Man 3 yet, but from the previews, the only things you would need to know from Iron Man 2 is that Tony Stark and Pepper Pots are now in a relationship, there are many versions of the Iron Man suit, Colonel Rhodes now wears one of those suit and called himself War Machine. Oh, and Tony Stark/Iron Man got involved with the Avengers Initiative, but you might know that from a small mention in a movie that was released at this time last year.

Rented Gangster Squad and The Jerk

Gangster squad was alright, perhaps a little paint-by-number, but had a real nice look to it. Nothing really bad about it, just maybe not a very original story.

The Jerk: great jokes, some great comedy moments, but otherwise I wasn't too impressed. I don't really know how to articulate how dumb the story was, but there are moments there that felt like a bad kids movie. And I really didn't enjoy Martin's performance/delivery all that much.

I don't want to know you anymore.

Agreed on the like, not love.

Didn't mind the length of the movie, but agree on the actual raid seeming to be a whole 'nother movie.

I don't think it was meant to show the guy being bothered, I think it was meant to show the shock of "holy crap we got him; we just finished a mission that took years of work." Trained or not, at some point, that will hit a person. Just my 2 cents.

Also saw Hunger Games over the weekend. It was good, not great. Jennifer Lawrence is really showing she is a very good actress, and I think (with the right roles/career path) she could end up among the greater actresses of our time. Maybe a Jodie Foster-level actress. As for the movie itself, I still prefer the Japanese "Battle Royale" which, while not technically the "original" of Hunger Games, it's close enough to call it that.

I WAS disappointed about the loose end of the Joe Mauer-looking kid that was JL's friend in the city. Don't know if they'll address that in the sequel, but kind of pointless to keep showing him later in the movie.

As long as you saw Avengers, you'll be fine. They pretty much have Tony dealing with the demons he has from fighting off an alien invasion and steering a nuke thru a worm hole into a space ship many light years away. and then the bad guys show up...

Django. So over the top, but aside from that I thought it was very well made. I enjoyed it.
