Life of Pi. Visually stunning but I honestly couldn't wait until it was over/bored.

I'm thinking OZ will be the same way. Not too excited about it but will wait until it hits Redbox and watch it some night I'm bored.

Equilibrium

Dystopian movie with Christian Bale/Taye Diggs. Pretty solid sci-fi movie. GREAT martial arts styled gunplay scenes. In the future, the government (or, a form of government) mandate that people cannot feel emotion, and provide a drug that makes that happen. Bale's character starts skipping the doses, and starts to feel.

The story is rather cliched, the action made it a fun movie to watch. Some twists and turns are in there, of course. Worth a watch.

Equilibrium is an awesome movie, and often gets compared to the Matrix though obviously it was not as commercially successful.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Killing Them Softly

Starring Brad Pitt as an enforcer for mafia that is "investigating" a hit on a high-stakes poker game.

I expected more action, and was disappointed in that. However, the slow/plodding/drawn out character scenes made up for it. You really get the feel at how a non-romanticized mafioso works/thinks. I really enjoyed the movie. Had that sort of 70's gritty feel, but modernized a little. Definitely recommend it if you want to see a movie that's a little off the radar from mainstream.

Also saw Hunger Games over the weekend. It was good, not great. Jennifer Lawrence is really showing she is a very good actress, and I think (with the right roles/career path) she could end up among the greater actresses of our time. Maybe a Jodie Foster-level actress.

She's really great in Winter's Bone and it's just an all around great movie.

Highly recommend that one.

As far as Hunger Games goes, I thought it was well done and pretty faithful to the book, but I was left wondering why I bothered since it was so faithful as to be redundant.

There are no loose ends btw. All stories are wrapped up by the end of the trilogy.

as I mentioned after I saw it, I still don't know what to think of this movie...it has its moments but it moves so slowly and the whole political overtones still seem confusing despite finding out the reason for them at the end.

Saw Winter's Bone quite a while ago, and yes, it's a great movie.

Broken City

That was a convoluted mess of a movie. Meh. I had my doubts watching the trailer, the cast involved sold me on it (despite Wahlberg playing *gasp* a cop!), and I should have gone with my first feelings.

The Man With The Iron Fists

It was almost good. Certainly had some good scenes and Crowe was a lot of fun as was Lucy Liu.

Not enough character development though which is what usually drives both Quentin movies and the new martial artsy movies - which is what this movie was trying to be.

Oh yeah, and Silver Lion with his Rick James-ish persona was quite fun too.

EDIT: Don't mean to imply that I didn't like the movie or that I thought it was bad. It was worth seeing, but won't get multiple viewings.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

This seems like the best place to ask the question as it was probably released on video, too.

I've been searching for an old Bill Cosby show where he had a story about his dad calling him Jesus Christ and his bother's name was Dammit. Does anybody know what the name or year of the release was? During the mid-80's my mom used to play the cassette tape during long the long Pittsburgh road trips we did annually. I still kick myself for not learning the title of that show.

I watched About Cherry a few nights ago. It is a move that I read about at some point, added it to my queue, and forgot about it until it showed up at my house. It is about a girl that is driven to the porn industry because of her alcoholic mother, and the need for money. It is an arthouse type of movie, and I thought it was decent. The movie focuses on Cherry's relationships with other people, and how they change as she progresses in the industry. The ending was a bit bizarre, as it seems like the conclusion of the movie takes all of 30 seconds, and then the credits roll. There were some relatively big names in it, James Franco, Dev Patel, and Heather Graham all have roles. For those that aren't interested in the story, you get to see the main characters boobs, alot, and she's pretty goodlooking. I could see some people loving this movie, and others thinking it is boring as all hell, it all depends on your tastes.

I had been searching without those names because they only just popped into my head as I was typing my question to this thread. Then I was lazy, and knew someone would laud their superior skills over me while I happily accept the fruit of their labor for free.

The Last Gladiators

Hockey enforcer documentary, mainly focused on Chris "Knuckles" Nilan. It came across as part Behind The Music and part 30 For 30, and that's not a bad thing. I really liked it, and will strongly recommend it to anyone, hockey fan or not. It romanticizes the enforcer role a bit at the beginning, but I think it was to set up the harsh reality of the role later on. Very well done doc, IMO.

Silver Linings

Loved it. Haven't seen Lincoln (and most likely won't as historical dramas aren't my bag), but feel like Cooper did an unbelievable job and just had bad luck that it was the same year as Lincoln came out. He was even better than Lawrence - and she was great.

Everyone in the movie was perfect.

Primary Colors

Starts as a dramedy, ends slightly more drama. Travolta is a bit much, Adrian Lester is the best (where the * did he go?). Emma Thompson, BB Thornton, Bates, Hagman all solid. If not for Travolta's attempt at Clinton's accent, this could've been a capable parody of any ol' POTUS campaign. :p

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Movie day. Taking a short break here, then going to try and squeeze in one or two more before Mad Men.

Croupier: awesome. If you like character studies....this is a movie for you. The actual plot really doesn't mean a whole lot. It's all about who the main character IS. Loved it.

Unknown (not the Liam one, this one has Greg Kinnear). 5 guys wake up in a warehouse, all have amnesia. Some are good guys, some are bad guys. Go. I really enjoyed it. Kept the intrigue up the entire time, and it was well done.

Cabin In The Woods: normally not a horror movie guy (I think I've actually liked 2-3 genuine horror movies overall), but this was outstanding. Simply outstanding. So glad I took a chance on it.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Last movie of the day was "Finder's Fee." Guy finds a wallet with a winning lotto ticket, and the owner of the wallet ends up in the guy's poker game that night.

Very much like "Suicide Kings" with the mind games and such; I liked it alot. Plus, James Earl Jones AND Matthew Lillard? Awesome.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

The Grifters: meh. Just meh. I think I was more interested in the actual cons than the movie itself. You noir lovers would like it, though. (I didn't know it was a noir-type movie going into it).
