Re: New/Rented movies: Here comes the movie to change all movies

Of course not, nobody wants to live on Tatooine, that'd be stupid.

BTW, humans have evolved to have sort of an innate superstition reflex.

But I was gonna go to Tashi Station to get some power converters...

Personally if I had a choice of movies to end up in it would be one where the women wouldnt look like the offspring of Smurfs and the aliens from Close Encounters but that is just me :D

Take a look at the people pictured in the story. If you were the guy chowing down with the full-size pizza box, you'd be suicidal, too.

I like how they got the guy pirating the movie, too. How impressed was the chick taking tickets with the package that guy had in his pants? :D

And I thought the losers having the lightsaber duel at the theater for Episode 3 were pathetic

Seriously, their parents need to kick them out of the house and make them grow up...it worked for Dirty ;)

Re: New/Rented movies: Here comes the movie to change all movies

Yes but I dont watch Star Wars and want to kill myself in the hopes of waking up on Tatooine! ;)

So we've been watching Star Wars at work (I work at a daycare), which I've never seen before. It's awesome, I might get hooked.

I feel stupid though, because I keep asking all the kids (who are 5-9) all kinds of questions and they know everything about it.

Someone call Darwin...
Tatoonine was a dry, dusty desert ****hole where all the mitaclorianians on the planet figure out if they just all got into one body, they could probably get off that miserable rock.

Where have you been for the last 20+ years?

Having already seen Funny Games, I decided to rent The Strangers. I was extremely impressed with the original, and I thought this version was extremely well done, although my one complaint is that the "intro" gave away the ending, even if the movie remained agonizing (in a very good way) for the viewer throughout.

Very productive visit to Redbox:

District 9: I was surprised how funny this film was. The main character is one of those classic tightwad nervous wrecks, which I thought added a little extra texture to the rest of the film. It was certainly a very creative approach to what is already a very well worn story. Think about how many times you've seen alien invasion stories and never once thought about the likelihood that they'd have had a disease outbreak while the bulk of their civilization was crammed into a ship. It was almost disappointing to see it devolve into an action movie at the end, but it was still a very good movie.

Inglourious Basterds: Tarantino is a fantastic director. Wow. I can't help but compare this film to Sergio Leone films, in the way he elongates scenes while still maintaining a really strong and palpable amount of tension. The opening scene at the farm and the basement tavern scene in particular stood out. You know you're in the hands of a good director when he can present such a simple scene, elongate the bejeesus out of it and still keep you on the edge of your seat.

The Hurt Locker: Very interesting to see a war movie where you see so very little of the enemy and yet maintain such a strong sense of danger and dread throughout (the use of bombs helps, I suppose). Even more rare to see a war movie that is so in tune with the thoughts, fears and behaviors of its characters. It gives it a certain emotional depth that is very rare for the genre. I haven't seen a lot of this year's movies, but I can definately buy into this one as an Oscar favorite.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3: Meh. Certainly not the worst way to spend 100 minutes, but not a lot going on in there. With heist/hostage movies you expect one of two things. Either an interesting plot with twists and turns or a strong cat and mouse game between the hostage taker and the protagonist. The way this film played out had too many holes in it for my taste. If John Travolta has no problem dying, then who is he trying to make all that money for? What was he trying to accomplish? What's the deal with James Gandolfini and his aide thinking about the Wall Street connection, heading out of the room as if they were going to investigate more, and then that whole subplot got abandoned? Unless I'm mistaken (I did go let the dog at one point here), we never see Gandolfini again until after the climax. ***?

Some of the extras on D9 are pretty interesting. Especially the one about how all the main characters dialog was basically improved, as opposed to scripted.

Is Sherlock worth $7?

Haven't seen it yet...bored with the NFL playoffs and was thinking of going to a 9pm showing here with tomorrow off.

I thought it was worth the $6 I paid for it. Its no masterpiece, but I was entertained.

Ditto. Just don't expect much.

OTOH, I couldn't possibly have expected as little as Daybreakers delivered. Cliche, boring, mind-numbingly stupid. Clean F.

from a directing standpoint I agree The Strangers had merit but I didn't get the same tension you did, I found myself in disbelief regarding the repetitive terrible decisons made by the couple. I know something like tying your shoes is hard if there is enough stress but there were too many bad decisions for me to feel the same agony....might have just been my mood, or expectation, I wish it had grabbed me more than it did.

Appaloosa:

Your standard good guys/bad guys and a love interest western, but it was well done. Well, it was well done despite the fact I wanted to punch Renee Zellwegger every time I saw her on screen. She just needs to go away and never come back, she's so *ing distracting.

Ed Harris rules, and Viggo does a fine job as well.

Better than I thought it'd be, although I was only expecting a very average movie.

Ed Burns does rule, so does Ed Harris who was actually IN that movie ;)

That movie sucked though...I nearly fell asleep from boredom.

My bad. I was still visualizing punching Renee in the face. :o

It was no Tombstone, but I can see where you thought it was boring.

Ok I am halfway through King of Kong and wow I thought I knew some nerds! So far the highlight is the look on the ********* Brian Kuhs face when Wiebe gets the kill screen. This schmuck is 30 years old, retired so he could spend his days at Funspot playing games in hopes of being the next Bill Mitchell and to see his hopes dashed made me smile!

Oh and Mitchell is an A#1 JERKOFF!

Great use of "You're The Best Around" from the Karate Kid though :D

Great movie. Being a not-so-talented old school arcade guy, that movie really blew me away.
