Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

So how a movie that makes money "under-perform?"

Well, lets say I make a movie for 150 million dollars and put it out in the summer setting it up to be the huge summer blockbuster and rake in the cash. Now, lets say I put it out and it makes 200 million dollars, it made a nice tidy profit for my studio but it vastly underperformed what I and the studio was hoping for. Most summer blockbusters expect to make 400-500 million dollars if not a lot more so it quite obviously underperformed but still made money.

Where I think the Disney deal is going to take effect is when you have a situation like The Incredible Hulk. Marvel spent a lot of money to reboot that franchise (150 million) and in reality it made less money than Hulk by Ang Lee which was a huge bust! (Hulk made 132 million domestically in 2003, Incredible Hulk made 134 million not adjusting for inflation and both lost money although Hulk only lost a couple million whereas IH lost 15) Now Marvel could decide to make a sequel to Incredible Hulk because the reviews were alright even though it lost money overall. Marvel could absorb the loss figuring the sequel will do better plus the lead in to the Avengers movie but Disney might not be so willing to do that ya know. (I am using IH for future reference, as of now Disney has said they will honor all deals but they dont have to in the future)

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

As i diehard hockey fan since I was around five years old, I'm a little bit ashamed to admit that I finally watched Youngblood for the first time.

Thought it was a pretty good movie about the life a junior hockey player in Canada trying to make it big. I loved the new guy hazing by shaving his you know what and taking him out to get drunk before practice the next day.

Yeah the hockey scenes are in slo motion but for a movie from the 80's with actual actors and not hockey players...what can you expect.

Definitely liked it though.

Any other big hockey movies out there or even small budget hockey films that I have missed that are must see?

I've seen:

all the mighty ducks
Slapshot
Slapshot 2 (ugghh....god awful)
Miracle
Youngblood
The Rocket (French Maurice Richard movie)

Strange Brew (sort of...still...watch it)
Mystery, Alaska (nothing tremendous, but still worth a viewing or two)
that Mike Myers movie released last year that I'm told really sucks

"Miracle on Ice" (Not "Miracle", and not the HBO documentary - this is the original movie based on the game. 1981, made-for-TV, with Karl Malden as Herb Brooks, Steve Guttenberg as Jim Craig, even George Brett as a Team Sweden player. It's pretty terrible, and I wish I could find it on DVD so I could watch it whenever I wanted.)

There's hockey in the beginning of "The Cutting Edge" (hockey player takes a brutal hit and retrains as a figure skater).

There was tv show based around Canadian hockey (MVP) that might be available to watch. It was pretty steamy/soap-opera-y, but awesome. (hmm...now I want to watch it) (not to be confused with MVP-Most Valuable Primate, about a hockey-playing monkey [note: Not about Chris Pronger]).

Kevin Smith and Ryan Reynolds movies tend to have hockey scenes (as do occasional David Boreanaz things)

There's hockey in the beginning of "The Cutting Edge" (hockey player takes a brutal hit and retrains as a figure skater).

From the old school:

The Cutting Edge is itself heavily influenced by the 1945 Sonya Henie movie "It's a Pleasure."

The might also be hockey in the 1947 "The Bishop's Wife" in the Central Park scene, I can't remember. (Aside: excellent movie)

There's a flashback of watching Hobie Baker skate at Princeton in F. Scott Fitzgerald novel "This Side of Paradise," (1919) but I have no idea whether any of the attempts to film it have portrayed that scene.

And of course Love Story is about a girl so distraught after her Harvard boyfriend loses a hockey game to Cornell that she dies.

Went to see Gamer today. It was worth the $6 I guess. Its what you expect.

Although the teabagging reference was funny. If you play FPS games online you understand, otherwise you will completely miss it.

I should mention there is a lot of boobs in this movie, but don't get too excited. It's almost all 1 second clips of them. But teens should be pleased.

Just the name of the movie makes me not want to go.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

I just watched There Will Be Blood. It was good, but the title is deceiving. I was expecting him to kill more than 3 people. That's only 1 murder per hour of movie. :D

Funny. :)

I thought it was good, too. It helped that I didn't have any idea what it was supposed to be about.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

I watched Men With Brooms last night and thought it was AWESOME and hilarious. and I'm in love with Paul Gross. Just a stupid funny movie. :) I want the soundtrack, though, and Amazon has it as an import - $37.99

I love that movie. Yeah, he doesn't kill that many people, but the end, when he beats the **** out of the preacher kid with a bowling pin, completely makes up for it.:D
