new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Meh, the whole "is the One just part of the System?" paradox was added value. It was sort of "new and improved Matrix 1," but you'll get that with most sequels. What sequel completely departed from the tone of the original? Mad Max --> Road Warrior's really the only one I can think of.
The Matrix was better before they brought in that Neo was really just part of the system and his whole existence was planned out. Became sort of a copy of the "Jesus" story, one of those repetitive savior stories that people seem to like religiously.

The multiple human cities/neo just added to the mess. In the end the story tried to do too much without being able to address it's sidestories properly. (If you hadn't seen some of the animatrix stuff, played some of the games you would be lost on some of the stuff going on, and interactions.)

Oh come on, Honey I Blew Up the Kid was completely different.

Hey, anybody remember the 19__ sequel to Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Honey, I Blew Up the Kid? Someone reminded me of it last weekend, and I'm still really upset about how misleading that title is.

Seriously, how hard would it have been to call it, Honey, I Enlarged the Kid or, Honey, the Kid Got a Lot Bigger Somehow, and It's Probably My Fault? Did no one at Disney realize that title might be a problem, or did they really just think that "Blew Up" was probably the best they could do?

When the movie first came out, I remember being really excited about the explosion that was sure to take place. (I have no idea why I was excited about seeing an exploding child; it's probably just that explosions are cool.) This sequel was definitely be better, if only because of the promise that things would blow up.

Now that I know a little bit more about movies, though, I'm pretty sure one where Rick Moranis explodes his child would be VERY boring. The first 20 minutes establish some kind of emotional connection with the characters, then the kid explodes somehow, and the rest of the movie is just about grief interspersed with a few scenes of marriage counseling. And I'm pretty sure that movie sucked when it was called Titanic.

On a side note, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was a misleading title as well. I think the kids shrunk themselves. Rick Moranis totally didn't need to take responsibility for that. Rather, it should have been called, Honey, Our Idiot Kids Shrunk Themselves, So Be Careful about Mowing the Lawn.

8. King Tut
Now when he was a young man, he never thought he would fight, Gotham City’s guy, the man they call Dark Knight! King Tut! Started on TV! Funky Tut! Lost some weight, you see. Born in Arizona, moved to Babylonia, he was born in Arizona— Got a crime lair made of stone-a! King Tut!

That is awesome! :D

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Watched Coraline last night, a little different than what I was expecting for how the story was going to play out, but very entertaining. Reminded me a lot of 'where the wild things are' (neglected kid goes to a fantasy world where the inhabitants just want to love them) and Hansel and Gretal (Has to outwit the evil witch in order to get back home from the nice nice version.)

"Now when I die, don't think that I'm a nut, don't want no fancy funeral, just one like 'ol King Tut...."

"Grandpaaaaa, bought a rubber"

"How many people have cats? One, two, three, four...okay, ten. Now- let me ask you this...do ya trust 'em? Because I've gotta get a pair of cat handcuffs and I gotta get 'em right away. Just the little ones that go around the little front paws or maybe the manacles..four, to get all four paws. But what a drag; I found out my cat was embezzling from me. You think you know a cat for ten years, he pulls something like this. I found out that while I was away, he would go out to the mailbox, pick up the checks, take 'em down to the bank and cash 'em... disguised as me. He had the little kitty arrow through the head...and the little kitty bunny ears. And I wouldn't have caught him, but I went out to his house where he sleeps...and there was about $3,000 worth of cat toys out there. And you can't return 'em 'cause they have spit all over them! So now I'm stuck with $3000 worth of cat toys! Oh, sure...they're fun. You got the little rubber mouse; has a bell inside of it- Haw haw haw! Boy, I hate it when it goes under the sofa! Whoa, gimme that! Gimme that! Hiss! hiss!"

I listened to his live album (with the bunny ears and white suit) not that long ago. He used to be so friggin funny, but I refuse to see his bastardization Peter Sellers' brilliant portrayal of Inspector Clouseau.

"funky tut, buried in his jammies, funky tut..."

I didn't even watch the YouTube clip and I can't get that song out of my head. :D

I just realized that the saxophonist in the sarcophagus was the same saxophonist from the Blues Brothers movie.

The Hurt Locker

The best war movie I've see since Sunday. :)

In all seriousness, this is easily one of the best movies I've seen all year. The intensity is jarring. I appreciated the chaotic/episodic way the events were presented in, as opposed to being set up in a more traditional story format. Granted it's August, but I think Jeremy Renner has a decent chance at being up for Best Actor come Oscar time, and the movie a better one for Best Picture (10 nominees will do that).

Went to see Moon tonight. This movie is outstanding. If it plays somewhere near you, go see it.

The budget was only $5 MM! Absolutely astonishing, you will not believe it was that cheap to make when you see it.

Agreed. Extremely powerful.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

We watched Henry V, which was a pretty decent adaptation of the play. The battle scene near the end as amazing. Watched a couple of guys get stepped on or kicked by the horses.

We also watched Kissing Jessica Stein. Pretty good overall. Best line: "Whose d**k do I have to suck to get some p***y? :D

I love that movie :)

Watched "Once" this morning. It's one of the bf's favorites, and I can see why. I really enjoyed it and they're very talented musicians.

Also sort-of watched "Hook" today while cleaning and unpacking. Very enjoyable even after all these years (though everyone looks so young by comparison).

Watched "Ocean's 11" (the remake) this evening. Every time I watch it, I really enjoy it. Not only does it hold up as a good movie through multiple viewings, but I notice different little things each time.

Is this the Kenneth Brannagh version? If so, I was impressed with it back in the day when I first saw it. I should re-watch it sometime.

That is one I really want to see.

Yes, it is a great movie (obligatory "for what it is"). Good action, good story, good acting. Sure it's not an Oscar movie, but I'll be dammed if it isn't on a "repeat viewing" list. :)

Yep. I remember when it first came out, I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it more this time around. I'll have to DVR it, or find a cheap copy on Amazon.

I won't even start a discussion on Oscar-worthy.
But yes, I agree on the great movie part. It's got subtle nuances that I like seeing in movies and, after having watched the director's and actors' commentaries, I appreciate it even more.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Saw Inglorious Basterds over the weekend -- it was exactly what I expected. Solid B plus from Tarantino -- if he remade "The Graduate" it would end with a firefight at the church. :)

Saw Paris Je T'aime on video -- montage of a dozen or so 5 minute films each based on a locale in Paris. They varied, but a lot of them were genuinely poignant or funny. A minus.

The opening scene in that version (Brannagh and the French ambassador) is outstanding.

That would be awesome. "Mrs. Robinson, do you want me to massage your feet?" :D
