Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

You know as bad as the prequels were... the lightsaber fight scene at the end of Phantom Menace was freakin' awesome.

See also: Yoda's fight scenes in the last two.

Everything else? Meh.

I thought when all the stormtroopers turned on the Jedi was pretty awesome.

The thing I liked about Phantom Menace more than the others was that Liam Neeson was about the only lead actor in the three movies that didn't deliver a completely wooden acting performance (Ewan had his moments, though).

And Darth Maul. But who didn't like him?

The Darth Maul dual lightsaber fight was awesome...the Yoda ones were ok the first time you see them but become rather laughable upon further viewing. The one in Revenge of the Sith was decent only cause it was the Emperor and it was spliced together with the Anakin vs. Obi-Won battle.

The two biggest mistakes the prequels made was killing off Darth Maul and making Attack of the Clones...Episode II should have been about the fall of Anakin (with a little bit about his affair with Padme...not a whole friggin movie!) and the Clone War and Episode III should have been about Vader and the Emperor hunting down the Jedi (in secret) and the confrontation between Yoda/Obi-Won and Emperor/Vader. And then they should not have shown Padme naming her ****ed kids at the end or that she had Twins and then died from a broken heart.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Yoda throughout the prequels has lost all his interesting character and is just a sappy Disney vehicle appealing to toddlers*, IMHO.

I've written (at length :p ) previously on why I think The Dark Knight is the most egregious example of fanboy blindness in toy movie history, but leaving that aside I had the same fears that you had for TDK coming into Watchmen -- I assumed the hype was overcompensation, the medium wouldn't translate, the Hollywood morons would ruin it and then gild it until it asphyxiated on its own gold paint like the chick in Goldfinger. I was very happy to see it was actually a fairly cool, reasonably competent job.

Likewise with Princess Bride, which I refused to see for years assuming they'd rape the book; finally relenting, it's a decent job (10% of the depth of the book, but, that's the standard book:movie ratio).

* "a sappy Disney vehicle appealing to toddlers" -- c.f. all of George Lucas' work since 1983.

The two biggest mistakes were letting Hayden Christiansen and Natalie Portman anywhere near the set, since neither can act their way out of a paper bag. Also letting George Lucas anywhere near a script, just ask him for the basic ideas and let people who don't suck at the actual writing do it (if I'm wrong and they didn't actually let him near a script for these three, he still got too close). Also, thinking that because you have really cool CGI that people won't notice you let the other stuff slide; I mean, really, for the original 3 yes the special effects were cool, but do you really think that was the only reason people watched him; see, also, the last 2 Matrix movies.

If you notice he didn't do the whole "Jewish-speak" (for lack of a less asinine term) thing at first, but they really ran it into the ground as time went on.

The Matrix 2 blew goats.

Yeah, I said it.

Meh, the whole "is the One just part of the System?" paradox was added value. It was sort of "new and improved Matrix 1," but you'll get that with most sequels. What sequel completely departed from the tone of the original? Mad Max --> Road Warrior's really the only one I can think of.

I won't argue that. He really became less of a character and more of a caricature, especially with the silly little "action Yoda" lines that they gave him. And his broken English just became increasingly absurd as the series went along.

But I just saw the end of Attack of the Clones on tv last night and I won't deny: Yoda's fight scenes are just freakin' great.

Predator -> Predator 2

Oh come on, Honey I Blew Up the Kid was completely different.

Kidding aside, I thought T2 did a decent job of doing more than just reinventing the original.
