New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Can someone explain what's so great about The Social Network? Just watched it last night, and it was an interesting story, but not much more. Eisenberg was good (but not great), however no other character stood out in any way and there was nothing at all special about the way the movie was shot or the story was told. I saw nothing that made me have any desire to watch the movie again - something I consider a true necessity for a "great" film. As far as the Facebook story? I really hadn't ever paid attention to any of the back-story before, so it did a good (fair?) job of telling it, but now that I know the story, why do I need to watch it again? What am I missing  ?
You aren't missing anything. Much like Facebook itself, it's an emperor's new clothes kind of deal.

Catcher in the Rye syndrome -- anything that self-absorbed spoiled children identify with is deemed "Culturally Important" when it's really just a mirror for them to caress themselves in.

Although to be fair, unlike Catcher in the Rye, The Social Network was pretty well-executed and entertaining, and the central character was only 95% loathsome. In other words, it's The Graduate.

I hated the Cather in the Rye and think The Graduate is overrated to the Nth degree. Just because the Social Network is about a bunch of self absorbed nerds doesnt mean it is trite like those pieces of "art" were.

It's all a matter of taste, but I'd give TSN the edge for a sense of humor and TG the edge for some interesting film-making (independent of the fact that every character is hateful). CITR was just sheer navel-lint-picking -- all you need to know about Boomers is they lapped it up.

But American popular culture (except music) has all been crap since Hemingway became an alcoholic, anyway.

No, most popular music sucks too.

Most of it, of course; 99% of anything popular is crap: the masses are asses. But maybe because of its sheer volume, there has been a huge amount of fantastic music that's come out of the USA since 1960 in sharp contrast to any other art form. European popular music is unlistenable.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Although many consider "Poolhall Junkies" to be a ripoff of "Rounders," even though the former came out a year before the latter, it's still an entertaining movie. Walken's little lecture towards the end is a classic.

And the "ni**a" back and forth during the opening of the movie is more than awesome.

I've watched the movie a few times, and definitely recommend it if you want a good repeat-viewing movie.

I watched The Social Network a couple data ago, and disagree with what was said earlier. I thought it was very well done and liked it alot. Definitely recommend it.

Since I was the one who started it, you should note that I never said it was a bad movie. Just that I didn't think it was anything groundbreaking (one good (not great) performance and nothing spectacular about the storytelling or cinematography), and that it didn't deserve Oscar buzz or that since it wasn't a "great" movie. Now that I've seen it, I have no desire to see it again, since I know the story. If you've never heard the story or haven't seen the movie, yes, I'd recomend seeing it, but it's nothing more than a good popcorn flic, IMHO.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Finally saw the True Grit remake. Aside from the ending I really enjoyed it. The sad part is that if they would have just ended it when she fell down before cutting to the "present" time and the explanation that her arm was mangled rather than that snake bull**** it would have been better. I still liked it a lot more than the original.

Saw two movies today:

1. Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. Okay, so instead of being a retard, you age differently. Wonderful. How ya doin' Forrest? Except for that, decent movie.

2. Zodiac. Good movie. One minor non-essential to the story flaw, I guess, but one that really gets me personally. A suspect claims to be left handed, but wears his watch on the left wrist. All the lefties I know wear their watches on their RIGHT WRIST, and ambidextrous people (like me) are a crapshoot. I wear a watch on my right wrist. Given that the suspect specifically said he was left-handed.....guilty.

I'm a righty, and while I don't wear a watch, I would normally wear it on my right hand.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

None taken. I've always known I'm a bit weird when it comes to watches.

And 99% of the time, I don't wear a watch. When I do, I always get told by someone "you have it on the wrong hand." I'd go insane if I had to wear one on my left wrist. It'd bug me to the nth degree.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Yeah. That's pretty much true as well. Except for the murdering part.

Euthanasia?

Looking forward to re-watching "Shogun" (the mini-series) this week. Saw it when I was maybe in 2nd grade? Read the book in 4th grade. Remembered that it was intense and awesome. Hopefully my memory didn't distort things.
