Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Seven Samurai

While it's an outstanding movie, I can't say it's been my favorite Kurosawa movie. Tishiro Mifune is awesome, though, as usual. Good action, great story, great acting overall by the cast. As far as movie-making goes, man, Kurosawa was so ahead of his time. Definitely recommend this one, but clear out an afternoon for it, as it runs about 3 1/2 hours.

Frost/Nixon

Pretty darn good movie. Frank Langella absolutely IS Nixon in this; amazing performance. Kevin Bacon also does a great job as Jack Brennan. The movie does a fine job of slowly building up to the explosive final moments of the interviews between Frost and Nixon, and it's interesting to see how each side prepared for the interviews.

No, it's not totally historically accurate, but I don't think that was the main point. This is more about the character of Frost and Nixon. Can Frost really be a journalist? Can Nixon endear himself to the public?

Definitely recommend it.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Question about Oscar nominations.
Are there limits on who can be nominated for a film? Specifically, can a film only have a nomination for best actor or best actress but not both? Hailee Steinfeld's character was at least as critical as Jeff Bridges' in True Grit yet she was nominated for supporting actress while Bridges received a best actor nomination.
Thanks. :)

Langella just gets better and better in his roles.

You can have the same film have a best actor and actress nomination. Sometimes the categories that are nominated are done in such a way that gives the actor/actress the best chance of winning. My guess is it was thought that Hailee Steinfeld may have a shot at winning in the supporting role category.

The classic example is "All About Eve" 1950. Bette Davis would have won the Oscar in a landslide that year but Anne Baxter (from the same movie) insisted on being nominated in the Best Actress category. So you had two Best Actress nominations from the same film. They split the vote. Instead Judy Holliday won. Personally I think Gloria Swanson should have won that year for Sunset Boulevard, but I digress.

No, 3 films have previously swept all 5 major Oscars (film, director, lead actress, lead actor and one of the screenplays) - the last of which was Silence of the Lambs. To the extent that a film may only have one nomination in the best lead actor/actress (with everyone else thrown into the supporting categories) , maybe. Can't say I've ever seen 2 actors or actresses nominated for lead oscars from the same film, but not sure it's impossible, either.

Edit: With the latter, I meant of the same gender, as in one nomination per gender in the lead actor/actress categories. Scooby's already pointed out it has happened before, though.

Thank you; it was a "GE had a thought while driving to work" moment and I was too lazy to do my own research. :)

They should be more stict with this, IMO. There was no way that Hailee Steinfeld was a supporting actress in that movie, her character was the #1 or #2 most important in the movie and was in nearly every scene! Yeah, she might not win if she's in the Best Actress category, but that is where she belongs with that role.

I have watched a couple movies since the last time I posted.

Moon: Very good movie, 95% of the movie, or more, was just with the one actor, can't think of his name. For about 5 minutes there was a complete, w.t.f. is going on here, and then when you figure it out it makes complete sense. Overall it was pretty enjoyable, and something I'd recommend.

Unforgiven: I saw this when I was quite a bit younger, and I always remembered it as being a great movie, and my memory didn't let me down. I put it on my Netflix queue after we talked about it here a little bit, since I hadn't seen it since I was about 10 years old. Excellent movie.

True Grit (the new one): I really like this one too, I thought Steinfeld was brilliant in her role and Jeff Bridges is awesome as always. Matt Damon bugged me, but I got the feeling that he was supposed to be an annoying **** in this movie. I have the original True Grit coming to my house soon, since I wanted to watch the 2 of them close together.

The Expendibles: Exactly what I was expecting, an entertaining, badass movie about killing bad guys. It was cool too see all of the old action stars again.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Movies watched over the weekend:

Year Zero - terrible. After my aforementioned dislike of Cera and the same for Jack Black, don't know why expected more. Didn't even laugh during it.

Pelham 123 - Denzel/Travolta version...meh, OK I guess.

Wall Street: MNS - disappointed in this. Loved the first Wall Street and was hoping for much more. Something I don't usually notice but it seemed to stick out - the soundtrack was terrible throughout the movie.

And in the case of SotL, for example, Anthony Hopkins was only in a small fraction of the film's time yet still was nominated and won as Actor.

.

Sam Rockwell, who I think is a very underrated actor. I though Moon was fantastic.

They had better watch out or they'll be on a highway to the danger zone.
