Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

You're one of those brown note people, aren't you?

I like it when the low brass gets a chance to drown everyone out, yes. We are constantly getting the hand from directors so people can hear the alto clarinet or xylophone. Annoying. :)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Watched Buried and The King's Speech the past 2 nights.

Buried was really good. Ryan Reynolds got me emotionally invested into it from the beginning with his frustration. A lot of digs at corporate america, military, and media.

The King's Speech was phenomenal. There's just so many great elements to it that I have little to say. I think Colin Firth without a doubt wins the Oscar.

Downfall:

I can only say three words about it:

Horrifying. Overwhelming. Amazing.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I've been slowly getting caught up on the good movies lately. True Grit and Black Swan were phenomenal. I'm a huge fanboy of both Aronofsky and the Coens so it's not surprising that I enjoyed them both, but they're tremendous pieces of cinema regardless of my own biases.

Aronofsky is still the king of making an audience feel uncomfortable and freaking you out. The only sad part with Aronofsky's stuff is that you know it's going to be screwed up in it's ways so you're expecting a mindf--k of some kind mixed in with heaps of "real" stuff.

The Coens ability to draw up the tension through a movie is fantastic and almost always has been good. Seeing Blood Simple on IFC again tonight confirmed that.

The Social Network was another piece of Fincher brilliance. For as unappreciated Zodiac was, he'll get his accolades for this in a big way.

Watched The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. I liked it, but felt like a big slacker loser. If I was ever completely paralyzed and mute, I don't think I would have the patience to communicate an entire book by blinking one eye, much less keep a sense of humor about it. It was pretty amazing.

Just read an article about the differences between the movie and the real story - very interesting. His girlfriend did not actually abandon him (she was there every day - not his "wife"), and the whole story about giving up his seat on a hijacked plane wasn't true.

Yeah I dont get why Zodiac was so ignored. I loved it and thought Downey Jr. was way better in that that the movies he is recognized for now.

I choose to ignore the rest of your post...well mainly the part about the Coens :p

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Watched 'The Quick and the Dead' and 'The Kingdom' the last couple nights. I enjoyed both quite well. 'Quick' has a very good cast with Sharon Stone, Dicaprio, Crowe, Hackman, and Sinise. I won't compare it to other Westerns, old or new, as I haven't seen many. 'Kingdom' has Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper, and strangely, Jason Bateman. Lots of guns, explosions, terrorist attacks, an investigation, and a twist at the end. An action thriller that surpassed my expectations. 'Red' and 'The American' await me at the Redbox.

Pirate Radio:

While it didn't know what the heck it wanted to be (rebellion story, coming of age, slice of life, historical nod, etc), it was entertaining. Obviously the soundtrack ruled. The characters were hilarious. The plot? Have no clue. There really was none, but tried to be one. Very fractured and frenetic. It'd be a great movie to watch amongst a bunch of drunks (MST3K style: meaning, lots of commentary from the peanut gallery), but that's about all I can say for it. All in all, a good time-killer.

Watched the first half of Arn: the Knight Templar. Pot boiler, but very entertaining.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I watched Memento last night for the first time in probably 8 years. It was great. Plenty of mindf--ks along the way.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Watched Kick-*** the other night and thought it was surpringly good. Zombieland was entertaining too. While I haven't seen The Social Network yet, Jesse Eisenberg reminded me too much of Michael Cera. Since I've heard such great things about TSN, I'm guessing Eisenberg has much broader range than Cera.

While I haven't see a ton of Hitchcock movies, Dial M and Rear Window are my two favorites.

I know people love Michael Cera but I think he was one of the most worthless actors around today. He has zero range...it isnt like he has a character he developed and just plays that, he is flat out just being himself and he has said as much in interviews. Eisenberg makes Cera look like that schmucky kindergartner who waves to his mommy during the musical :p

There are a dozen top grossing young actors and actresses who would say the same thing (if they had the self-reflection). I don't have any problem with Cera -- he's an anime character and you go in knowing exactly what you're going to get.
