New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

My guess is that Colin Firth wins "Best Actor" hands down. I haven't seen The King's Speech yet (probably will Friday afternoon since my wife and I both have the day off), but that's the heavy favorite to win at least 2 or 3 of the Big 5 awards.

Good thing Bale will be up for Supporting Actor. ;)

My guess is the other dude from King's Speech (whose name escapes me - the one playing the speech therapist) is the heavy favorite for that one too.

Certain movies just scream Oscar based on period, production, etc. - British historical pieces about flawed royals are probably second only to epics (Ben Hur, Titanic, Gladiator, Gone with the Wind) in Oscars.

Huh, weird, the impression I had from a couple of articles I saw was that Geoffrey Rush (who plays the speech therapist) was the star and Colin Firth (who plays the king) was the second lead. I guess maybe I'm wrong.

You could be right (as I said, I won't see it til this weekend). My understanding is that it's basically the 2 of them on screen most of the time, but Firth gets top bill on the poster and IMDB (not always accurate), so I assumed he'd be lead actor and Rush would be supporting. Wouldn't surprise me to see it the other way, though.

Edit: Golden Globes and others have Firth winning/up for lead, and Rush winning/up for supporting, FWIW.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Got Inception for Christmas (and then promptly had to regift it a few hours later...long story, but anyway), and got to watch it for a second time. Despite knowing the plot and having already seen it, I think I have more questions after the second viewing. Also, it is definitely a movie that should be watched in one sitting, we took a break for dessert during the movie and it seemed to break it up and made it harder to follow the plot.

Will be disappointed if it's not up for a few Oscar nods (of course, I already think the Oscars are full of scheise, but if there is hope that more thought-provoking movies will be made, this must do well).

That is what people thought when Saving Private Ryan was up for Best Picture...gritty epic war dramas like that are usually shoe ins. We know what happened there.

Plus with the new voting style anything can happen.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Here's what I think would be great for the best picture nominations: 5 sometimes leaves out quality pictures. 10 is obviously way too many. It would make much more sense for them to just set 5 and 10 as their limits and just cut off the number of nominees where the votes begin to drop off.

I'd like to think no one won Best Picture that year. I mean, it's certainly a preferrable memory to what really happened.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Oh yeah, since it's been on all weekend; Cage is also decent in National Treasure, which itself is way more enjoyable than it has any right to be (the sequel sucks, though). Frankly, National Treasure makes for a better Indiana Jones 4 than the actual Indiana Jones 4.

Showgirls makes for a better Indiana Jones 4 than the actual Indiana Jones 4.

Saw four movies over the holidays:

True Grit -- vowed I wouldn't see it because I love the original, but I owed a concession to my wife and this was it. Really enjoyed it until the last 20 minutes, which are laughably bad. Otherwise, though, extremely well done, and the girl, while no Kim Darby, was a good take on the character. A- until the end, which is a full on F

The Town -- trite, cliche, every plot twist is telegraphed, and just plain stupid. A few nice touches with secondary characters but any movie where Blake Lively gives a better performance than the leads tells you something. Don Draper is still sexy hot, though. Oh, except Afleck's psycho semi-brother, who was excellent. D

North Face -- crazy-beautifully shot, kind of hamfisted plot and obviously manipulative, but still compelling. The woman gives a great performance. B+

King's Speech -- frickin' brilliant acting and obviously has Best Picture and Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor* all over it. A+

* What determines whether a role is BA or BSA? Is it just the number of lines? King's Speech essentially has two lead males and two supporting females.

Then there are years where 5 is still too many (1997, for example - what an absolutely horrendous field: English Patient, Fargo, Secrets & Lies, Jerry McGuire, and Shine).

Winter's Bone

To borrow from another review, it is "Haunting, Grim, but somehow Optimistic". I would classify the optimism as extremely fleeting (although the moods inflicted aren't nearly as depressing as say in Reqeium), but regardless I was wrapped up in the story throughout. As a father of two young boys I couldn't stop thinking about it hours later as I lay in bed. I liked that the producer didn't try to hide what happened to Jessup (not necessarily how, but what) even as Ree was seeking out an answer for herself. I recommend this one immensely.

I think the studio and/or producers pick - basically it comes down to how they choose to nominate the actors.

Normally that means only one actor/actress for lead so as to not split the vote, then any others will get nominated in the supporting roles.

Which also makes it wierd in those rare occasions when the same person is up in the same category twice for roles in different movies. Tell me how that doesn't cause vote splitting issues.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Crank 2: High Voltage.

I just...what the...JFC...Um...

That about sums it up. Crank was a perfect Sipper Saturday movie. Crank 2? Well, it makes Crank look like a general family movie that was believable. Granted, it was enjoyable in the holycrapwhatridiculousnessisthis?! sort of way. But still...wowzers.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Finally saw Get Him to the Greek. Loved it; extremely funny. I've been to that party. "Why is Moby whipping me?"

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

The King's Speech was ****ed good.

It's "R" rating was one hundred percent rubbish, though. Got it for 2 scenes involving cursing as a means to get past his stammering. Absolutely no sex or violence; they even tamed down the few references to WWII. Outside of my 3-year old nephew's habit of repeating everything he hears, I'd have no problem with him seeing that movie. Certainly an 8- or 9- year old could see it without being scarred for life.

/rant off. I feel better now.
//idiotic MPAA is idiotic.

Have you seen This Film Is Not Yet Rated. If not it will explain exactly why anything the MPAA does makes absolutely no sense. If so then you already know.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Watched Blood Into Wine via Netflix instant. I'll admit I'm a Maynard/TOOL/APC/Puscifer fan, but nonetheless it was informative and funny.

Good little "documentary".

This movie was awesome! That is a side of Maynard you never get to see and it was really enjoyable. I would highly recommend this to everyone :)

I'm not a Russel Brand or Jonah Hill fan, but this movie made me laugh more often than I thought it would. Probably because I had zero expectations.

"Where the * are you?

I am going to kill you.

:)"

Ditto. I was expecting a one or two joke film that would disappoint, but it ended up pretty good.
