New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Just watched True Grit. The new one, with Jeff Bridges. The girl that played Maddie was excellent. I hope she gets an Oscar nom. The movie was entertaining. I never saw the John Wayne version. I read that this version is more true to the book than the John Wayne version was.

That's what I've heard, but you simply must watch the Wayne version. It's one of my favorites. Wayne was great in it, and Kim Darby (I think that's her name) does very well as the girl. I did notice in the new one's trailers that they kept some of the better key lines from the old one.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

My dad read the book, he said the Wayne version was pretty darn close. I think the Coen Brothers were the wrong directors to make the remake.

Crocodile Dundee II is horrid. the only way anyone can actually like it is if they never saw the first one to compare the two.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Watched Blood Into Wine via Netflix instant. I'll admit I'm a Maynard/TOOL/APC/Puscifer fan, but nonetheless it was informative and funny.

Good little "documentary".

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I will have to check that out, I am a major Tool/APC bobo :D

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Watched The Town this morning. It was really good. Ben Affleck has turned into a pretty talented person. I was pretty impressed with Jeremy Renner's Boston accent. I was not impressed with Blake Lively's.

Not everyone can convincingly sound that annoying. ;)

Went to True Grit this afternoon with Mrs. Moose. I'll admit that I've never seen the original, so take note of that. We both liked it a lot. The girl is fantastic, and I hope she gets some recognition.

I've read that the young lady is getting Oscar consideration in her first acting role. I've also read that the Cohen brothers haven't seen the original, so you're not alone.

If that's true about the Coens, I like it. That means that there's nothing in the first movie that influenced them in any way. They just took what they did from the book.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I find it hard to believe that guys like the Coen bros. haven't seen a movie like True Grit.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Today was Boston Movie Day - just watched The Fighter. It was pretty excellent. Christian Bale was totally amazing as Dicky Eklund and probably earned himself an Oscar nom if not an actual Oscar for the role.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

The Fighter is the only movie out right now I have any interest in seeing. Glad to hear you liked it Scarlet.

And if the Coen Brothers didnt see True Grit I will eat my pants.

edit: I just watched the clip Brent put on here a few pages back and the Coens copied that scene shot for shot...it is the same minus Bridges horrid accent/voice. They obviously saw it.

I want to see The King's Speech, The Fighter, Black Swan, and True Grit. And I haven't read the book, but that scene could have been in there, too. I don't know.

Oh, there's that unrated movie that came out, can't remember the name of it. Blue America? Or something weird like that? I guess some of the sex scenes were not to the MPAA's approval, but I guess it's a really good movie about a marriage or something.

The director of photography could have tossed in some suggestions for one or two of the takes and then they just went with that. You never know. It does seem unlikely that the Coens have never seen the original, though.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

More likely they havent seen it since they decided they wanted to remake it. It doesnt matter I just have a hard time buying they didnt see it years ago :)

I am watching Crazy Heart right now and you know how I know Jeff Bridges is awesome in this flick...I have to keep reminding myself that I am not watching some Waylon Jennings documentary or some old bio pic of some old time country star. I think Jeff Bridges is one of the best actors of our time anyways but this is a whole nother level. I dont even like country music and yet I am enthralled in this movie.

BTW I never thought I would say this, but Colin Ferrel is awesome as well. I pretty much hate him in everything but he totally pulls off his character in this one.

My guess is that Colin Firth wins "Best Actor" hands down. I haven't seen The King's Speech yet (probably will Friday afternoon since my wife and I both have the day off), but that's the heavy favorite to win at least 2 or 3 of the Big 5 awards.
