New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Saw Burn After Reading over the weekend. It was pretty good mainly because they got all sorts of quirky details of the DC area exactly right (the Cox' house decor and their mannerisms, e.g., were dead on for who their characters were -- you see them at Wegman's every weekend). It also has one of my all-time favorite actresses (Tilda Swinton) doing a comedic turn for once. And Malkovich is always perfect. Semi-recommend, B-, plus a half grade if you do defense-intel and another half if you're a Beltwayer.

I tend to agree. Like many Coen brothers' flicks, this one sort of grew on me. The first time I watched it, I was less than impressed, especially considering the cast. (Malkovich can generally do no wrong IMHO.) Then I watched it a few more times, and I started to like it. Certainly no Fargo or Miller's Crossing, but a decent flick overall. Looking forward to their rendition of True Grit.

Saw two movies this weekend. First, went to see Black Swan. I enjoyed it, and it definitely had a few moments where I wasn't exactly sure what was going on. Guess I should expect that from Aronofsky, though. Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman aren't bad to look at, either.

Saw The Fighter after that. Loved it. Christian Bale was incredible.

Okay, this could either be really good or really bad. I've liked Simon Pegg's stuff so far, so I do have hope.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Roger Ebert announces the new co-host for the new version of At The Movies.

Also, this is why I usually go to AVClub.com for entertainment news:

Anyway, apparently Ebert overheard Vishnevetsky discussing film in Chicago’s Lake Street Screening Room one day, and he went straight home and checked out his work online. So, lesson learned: When in a room full of colleagues, always voice your opinions as articulately and loudly as possible, because it might get you a job and make you famous. This also works at nightclubs, but with sex.

TF is wrong with you, Dude Where's My Car? was awesome.

That's sort of what I was saying about Dude. Frankly, that's probably the epitome of a "Saturday Afternoon Killer" movie. It's a terrible movie, but it's so bad it's good. Also see: most 80's pop music. ;)

To further my point of view, Grindhouse and Machete, movies that were made to be "horrible" are simply so bad they're great. Except even more so than Dude, Where's My Car.

I (and moreso GLM) can also point out movies like "Dolemite" and "Black Belt Jones." :D

I really liked both of those movies as well and echo your sentiments... Saw True Grit last week and really enjoyed that as well

No, see, I don't think it's a terrible, "so bad it's good" movie. I think it's a movie that set out to be an amusing stupid stoner comedy and achieved exactly that. That makes it a plain good (no "so bad it's") comedy.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I know most of the people around here don't like country music...but I just heard on the radio a song from Country Strong, which by all accounts will probably be terrible. It was sung by Garrett Hedlund, who I found out is the dude from Tron. Apparently he had never sang anything before, and they told him to learn how to sing and play guitar for this part. You have to listen to this song, just once, even if you don't like country. You would never never believe that he is actually singing, he sounds incredible, and it is actually him singing. The name of the song is Chances Are.
