NESCAC '15-'16 season

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Lesperance has 12 penalties on the year, in 15 games. She also has 6 in the last 4. While it might seem like a lot, there are several players, especially out west that are in the 10-15 penalties range on the year. She's also on their top line and is fairly aggressive, so penalties happen. To say she is a dirty player is stupid.

My guess is Mandigo checked/injured their player and went unpunished so they punished her. Is it right, no...but it happens.

So we asked Pucko if Mandigo injured the LF player and got no answer, so I'm going to guess you're wrong (also I watched the game and didn't see it). Even if it did happen, I'm pretty confident it wasn't intentional - she took 3 penalties all of last season - so the odds are heavily against your uninformed guess. The video of Lesperance shows a clear intentional full speed open ice elbow to the head - with an 8" height differential it is pretty obvious. May Lesperance take a similar hit to the head - perhaps it will teach her to curb her aggressiveness and "knock some sense into her" (btw - this kind of statement is the same dumb***** thinking that you displayed in your last line).

Also - discovered that Lesperance is an All-American soccer player. Surprise - she led the team in yellow cards.

EDIT: Mandigo not playing tonight against Plattsburgh

okey dokey...so you "assume" Mandigo injured their player...riiiiight. That's a pretty big assumption from someone who didn't see the game.

P.S. Be "fairly aggressive" all you want...you target the head with a blatant cheap shot...you're suspended in my book. For more than one game too.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Interesting, weird night for the NESCAC with not the greatest night for NESCAC goalies.

- Middlebury loses 3-0 to Platty with a EN goal. Neuberger played well, but really got handcuffed on two shots by former D1 player Erin Brand. In both cases, she couldn't react fast enough to the hard shot from the point, puck bounced high in the air off of her upper body, dropped behind her, and was tapped into the net. Those are two tough goals resulting from a D1 level hard shot. In the end, these two shots were the difference in a relatively evenly played game.
- Amherst ties Elmira 2-2. Good game - Elmira is fast and move the puck. Amherst did well to keep up with them. In this case, Dobbins played pretty well also, but on the second goal thought the Elmira player was going behind the net, anticipated and started to move over, and she flipped the puck high on the short side over Dobbins shoulder on a backhand - not a great goalie play - didn't look like she was used to the turning speed of the Elmira player. Would have liked to see the disallowed Elmira goal but of course Stretch Internet cut off with 10 minutes left as usual - they suck - NSNSports is way better - Stretch Internet announcer called the puck a ball half a dozen times and used basketball terminology on occasion to describe hockey plays.
- Bowdoin goes to overtime to beat a subpar Southern Maine team
- Hamilton struggles with Potsdam.
- Williams struggles to score and beat sub-par Salve Regina, finally winning 1-0

It's interesting how there is all this clear video of the hit on Mandigo...but no one seems to have any video or have seen the hit that happened on the Lake Forest player...Making a Murderer part 2? :) :)

Dirty players often get named All-Americans...I don't know enough about soccer to know whether 4 yellow cards in a season is excessive...interestingly Michelle Greenway another hockey player, was second on the team with 3. Holly Lesperance is 5'1...so Mandigo is 4'5??

No S, Sherlock...that's the whole point. They almost never are suspended.

As to your point about Mandigo being 4'6"....ok-what? The point made was that she is much TALLER than the LF player...and therefore the little angel had to really go out of her way to clock her in the head with an elbow...a play that would make the WWF proud, but not any real hockey fan. Your attempts to defend her are laughable.

I actually never defended her...just pointed out that calling her a dirty player based on one incident is stupid. But you are really good at being stupid. I did misunderstand the comment that Mandigo was taller than Lesperance...I took it to mean that she was shorter.

With that I"m done with this conversation...so feel free to huff and puff all you want...I know it makes you feel better about yourself.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

1-1 end of 1 at Kenyon. Utica pp goal by Schnep. Midd goal St Clair from Jackson and Wulf

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Apologies to Ms. Shuchuk, also '19, on not giving her credit for the winning Midd goal. There were several players at the top of the crease, and the goal was announced as Marotta's but has now been corrected on collegehockeystats.net.
Friday afternoon's 2-1 Middlebury win over Utica came courtesy of the Class of '19. Tender Verplanck picked up her first career victory stopping 25 of 26 Pioneer shots while making career first goals from classmates St. Clair and Marotta enough for the win.
Utica opened the scoring on the powerplay. Following a faceoff in the right wing circle, Reed moved the puck out to the blue line to Dion; Dion lofted a shot throught traffic, on net, that was saved by Verplanck but a long rebound found Schnepp low in the left circle and she rockeedt a forehand into the net up to Verplanck's gloveside. The Panthers tied things off an aggressive forecheck effort by Wulf. She broke up a Pioneer rush grabbing a pass at the top of the left circle, and moving the puck ahead to Jackson below the left dot. Jackson had some space and got a shot on Utica goalie Lupo; Lupo made the save but St. Clair fought free and stuffed home the rebound low to Lupo's gloveside from the top of the crease.
The 2nd period saw back and forth attempts to take the lead. Hlinka rang a wrist shot off the crossbar from low in the left circle about 10: and Verplanck robbed Reed's point blank one timer of a rebound stickside of the crease at 14:10. Pioneer goalie Lupo made a nice effort controlling the puck in a scrum at her stickside post at 16:25. Middlebury cashed the eventual game winning goal off the forecheck. Thibault made a great play in the left corner and up the half boards, getting the puck out to Marotta on the blue line. Marotta stepped up and her slap shot got through traffic at the top of the crease and into the net. Utica then had a chance to tie as the period came to an end when Dion rang a drive off the gloveside post from the right point skating on a 5x3 powerplay.
The Pioneers still had 5x3 skating time opening the 3rd, but Verplanck and the Panther D withstood the pressure. Verplanck then came up with a game saving stop on a 2x0 walk in at 5:30 stuffing Reed shortside gloveside with a decoy lurking at the top of the crease. As time wound down Utica was pressing to tie. The Pioneers got the extra attacker on ice only to have Middlebury gain control of the puck forcing the tender back on ice.
Late breaking NESCAC news sees Bowdoin defeat Amherst 3-2 scoring a goal (Bourque from Bell on a nice feed to Dobbins' stickside) with :07.8 for the win (after Amherst tied at 17:58 on a very soft goal)!

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Middlebury exploded for 3 goals in just over a 6 minute span in the 2nd period and easily skated past visiting Endicott for a 5-0 win at Kenyon this afternoon. Gull net minder Jonsson was not making it easy in the 1st as she turned aside 23 of the 24 Panther shots she faced. The lone goal was on the powerplay. Young moved from left point and got the puck on net; Jonsson made the initial save but both Wulf and Shuchuk got whacks at it before Winslow slid it home for the 1-0 lead. The second score saw the Class of '19 team up again for the Panthers. Martini worked down into the right corner, getting the puck to St. Clair; St. Clair skated across the end boards, coming around Jonsson's stickside and sliding a pass to Jackson for a one timer from the top of the crease. Moments later Hickman won a draw in the right circle back to Van Kula; Van Kula passed across to Lafontaine at right point and her long shot found the net low to Jonsson's gloveside. The third goal of the outburst came with Martini passing from deep in the D zone to Winslow in the neutral zone in front of the gull bench; she swiftly was in on attack 2x1 and made a perfect feed to her left to Jackson for a blast beneath Jonsson from the slot. Young picked up the fifth goal with a rush through the neutral zone across the blueline on right wing and cutting into the high slot on her lefty forehand beating Jonsson low from between the dots; assists to Quirk and Winslow. Dreher was in net for the Panthers and earned her first career shutout turning aside all 12 Endicott shots.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

I spoke briefly to one of the Endicott fans in the stands, and they confirmed the team is scheduled Middlebury this weekend, Bowdoin on Tuesday, and Trinity this coming weekend. That seems to be a really challenging weekend for the team. I was impressed by the Endicott goalie Jonsson.

If I'm reading this right, the Amherst split with Bowdoin places the Nescac first place slot back in Middlebury's hands. Who must now face Bowdoin next weekend. This should be a good pair of games.

The other surprise was Trinity only getting three points from Hamilton. I have not seen Trinity play since the first games of the season at Middlebury, where I thought the second game they were playing up to their standards from previous years.

Trinity seems to be heading in the wrong direction. Williams continues to be an enigma, have a hard time scoring. A sub-par Bowdoin beating Amherst was the big shock of the weekend...My vote for Conf. dark horse goes to the Camels of Conn. Back to back nescac sweeps and not scored on in several games in a row.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

My D graduated last year but I like to follow the league's performance and enjoy the banter on this thread. I have an observation that I would like feedback on...

In year's past, when you would look at the D3 player stats on the collegehockeystats website, there would be upwards of 10 or more skaters ranked in the top 35 of point getters per game, however, this year, the first NESCAC player doesn't appear until the 35th slot. Similarly, there are only two NESCAC players listed even near the top in the goals per game rankings - one at the #10 spot and the next doesn't appear until the #41 slot. Middlebury and Amherst seemed to always have a prolific scorer or two as well as Trinity - the other NESCAC schools less so, but where did all our scorers go?? Did they graduate and no one has replaced them or have our goalies gotten that much better?

Looking forward to hearing wisdom from those who watch these teams more closely.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

goalies may be better but also you have a lot of new [bad] teams out there...playing a lot of games where the scores get lopsided...my guess is the nescac teams don't play the same # of games against some of these very weak teams?
