As for Williams...I think you may be vastly over-rating that team...They have played 2 of the nescac basement dwellers and done 'ok'...but I don't think they will finish the year in the top 4 in the conference....we will know more come January".

I understand Middlebury has inexperienced goalies (a collective 10 games to date), but they have a team .927 saves % through 6 games and have hardly been playing the Sisters of the Poor. You are not recruited to play goal for the Panthers if you are a sieve.
The January 8-9 Midd at Amherst games should be for conference hosting rights.
Williams schedule allows them time to gel. They play Conn, Trinity, Amherst and Middlebury after January 22 and get 6 of the 8 games in the friendly confines of Lansing-Chapman.

King Mandigoo never makes a recruiting mistake? LOL The most important position in hockey...And it will bite him in the A**!

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Amherst at UMass-Boston tonight at 7. I was able to catch both the Bowdoin-UMass and Norwich-Amherst games and do not see why the Lord Jeffs should not roll out of town 6-0.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Amherst 4 UMass-Boston 2
Slow start for the Purple and White (?) but they pretty much dominated after the 1st. Myette in net for UMB kept things closer than the final would indicate.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Congratulations to Coach Moberg and her Castleton team on their OT win at Middlebury. They hung tough, outplayed Midd in the 3rd and made the most of their opportunity in the OT.

Castleton impressed me. Several very good offensive players including Steadman who is a deceptively quick, nifty player who is very tough to defend and smart with the puck. Defense is so-so but the Goalie is exceptional. Without her they loose to Midd and Conn by 2 goals. They do give up a lot of shots, but overall, a very solid team.

My impression was they gave up a lot of low quality shots from the outside, and zero rebounds. Their defense's ability to deny second chances in front of the net was a big difference in the outcome of that game.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

I'm surprised the Elmira-Williams game didn't get more attention. Williams plays them even with several players missing due to injury and has a chance to tie on a penalty shot in the last 2 minutes. I'm starting to think Williams may be a factor this season.

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Looking forward to a great game in Kenyon tonight!
Let us hope the Panthers are revved up and ready to take it to the Foresters!

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

On the Middlebury-Lake Forest broadcast the announcers stated that Middlebury's Carly Watson is out for the season with a knee injury suffered in the last regulation minute of the Conn College game that ended in a tie. That's a big loss for Middlebury. Hope for a successful recovery for her.

Cross-Check - did you see the injury?

Midd 1 LF 0 end of 1. Shots 10-10. PP goal by Mandigo from Wulf and Winslow. LF had better of play

Final 2-1 Middlebury - be interesting to hear the Westerner's take on this one. LF outplayed Middlebury in the first, but Middlebury clearly outplayed LF in the second and third. Game winner was a juicy rebound left sitting in front with an unattended Middlebury player banging it home - LF goalie did a pretty good job but this was the one I'm sure she wants back. LF had their chances in the last minute but couldn't finish - they took 2 bad/mindless penalties in the last 5 to really shoot themselves in the foot. Katie Mandigo took an open ice elbow to the head in the middle of the third (clearly intentional as the LF girl skated by her) that went uncalled and she left the game and didn't return - looked very woozy leaving the ice. For a change, Coach Mandigo had every right to scream at the officials on this one. Will be a tough one for Middlebury if she can't play this weekend against Amherst.

I was shocked to hear that Middlebury still hasn't played an away game this season - 8 at home to start. 3 away, then 4 at home. So 11 of the first 15 games at home. How do they pull that off?

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Middlebury and Lake Forest got the second portion of the season off to a rocking start with the Panthers taking a 2-1 decision at Kenyon this evening. While shots for the game were 34-21 in Middlebury's favor both Carter in net for the Foresters and Neuberger for the Panthers were outstanding.
The early going saw Middlebury's Hickman ring a forehand off the crossbar on an open drive from the left dot at 1:40. Momentum appeared to be swinging in the Foresters direction as the period unfolded with Neuberger barring the door for the Panthers. A neutral zone penalty resulted in a Middlebury powerplay goal mid-period. Young held the puck in zone on left point and Winslow took it down the half boards deep into the left corner; Wulf dug it out and made a pass from behind the goal line to Mandigo for a one time forehand rammed beneath Carter from the gloveside of the crease for the 1-0 Panther lead. Lake Forest continued to pressure the Middlebury net and Neuberger made a great effort denying Ebdon with a left pad from in close on the Forester powerplay. Lake Forest evened the score early in the 2nd with Greenway on the forecheck off a Panther breakout on the left half boards and getting the puck to Buddein who walked across the slot for a forehand under a moving Neuberger. Neuberger was tested at 11:40 with a series of stops on a Greenway forehand from the left dot and covering up on her stickside post. The 2nd ended with things tied at 1-1. The gamewinner came early in the 3rd on a lovely rush up ice by Laven. Picking up the puck in the D zone Laven came out in front of the Middlebury bench, moved through neutral ice and over the blue line into the high slot for a blast that handcuffed Carter; Van Kula swooped in on the rebound and she one timed the puck home under Carter. Lake Forest seemed happy with a more physical style than we see in the East and refs O'Brien and Cross let play go for the most part. This may have contributed to an ugly moment late in the 3rd when Middlebury's Mandigo took a whack from a passing Forester as play was moving away up ice. I would be interested to hear from someone with access to game footage, as it looked like a really cheap shot with no penalty assessed. The game continued; Lake Forest was able to get the goalie off for the extra attacker, but never got the scrum at the top of the crease and the game ended with the big 2-1 Middlebury win.

See my post above yours. Saw the game and it was clearly intentional and definitely intended to be at the head. Katie is a tall girl (5'10"?) and the LF girl had to bring her elbow up to Katie's head level to get the shot in - really unbelievable that it wasn't called - two refs, two linesmen, and it was right near the puck although the flow of play had started the other way as you indicate. Just a really bad head shot that should have been a major/ejection/suspension. No axe to grind for me on this one as I'm not a Middlebury or LF fan (although I respect the two programs), but this was ugly as you note.

[Watson injury]...If knee damage it is as serious as reported...No...I don't think it happened in the Conn game as I do not recall anyone leaving the ice on a stretcher.

OK - just going by what the announcer said. If she tore an ACL or MCL or something like that it could have been a non-contact injury and she just skated off....

Re: NESCAC '15-'16 season

Caught the Middlebury/LF game last night. Yes that was an intentional cheap shot to the head that Katie Mandigo took. Very surprised that there was no call, but as has been mentioned it was just behind the play. Middlebury played hard and gritted out the win against a very good LF team. Very tight game in site of Midd's shot advantage. Playing Amherst on the road will be a stern test for the Panthers and will give a good indication of how this team is coming together. They seem to be lacking the scoring punch needed to make the difference in tight games against good teams.
