NESCAC '12 to '13

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Big NESCAC weekend in southern New England! The schedule gods have aligned things and I will be able to watch 6 teams play 4 games in 3 days. Lots of ??? to be answered: is Hamilton for real...can the Panthers play well at Koeppel...Kardinal Koolaide (or do the Lord Jeffs really give up 5+ goals a game).
Anyone want to venture their opinion?

Seems to me the formula for success in NESCAC has always been keeping the puck out of your own net. Midd seems to be succeeding despite some soft goals against, while Amherst needs to find some way to avoid the title of train wreck. If goaltending still carries the day in this league then you have to keep an eye on Trinity, as Pujol seems to have no peer.

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

I like the Panthers to sweep the Bantams at Koeppel. While Pujol currently sports an unconscious .982 saves %, she is a decidedly mortal 0-4-1 against Midd for her career (with a .900 %). Trinity has scored better this season (several coaches at the Cardinal/Panther mentioned 1st year Tani), but I thought Midd looked strong against the top notch competition last weekend. The Panthers still need one of the goalies to step up and play consistently, however they look to be the cream of the conference once again.
Will Hamilton finally get their act together under 1st year Coach McNamara? They come to New London to face the Camels following a split with Amherst and road wins over Cortland and Oswego. They have scored 20 goals in their 4 games, but did give up 9 (Hazlett was 41/50 or .820) in spliting with the Lord Jeffs. I saw Conn score pretty easily in beating a decent Salve Regina team 6-2, and the Camels usually play well at home, so I have to think split at Dayton.
Wesleyan travels up I-91 to play the shaken Lord Jeffs. The Cardinals arrive at Orr (as I hope to on Saturday) with a 2-2 record. Split against Williams, win over Sacred Heart and played tough losing to Holy Cross. Amherst is currently 1-3 and has given up 23 goals in 4 games. That said, the Lord Jeffs did not look too bad against some of the nations best last weekend. They played even with Plattsburgh (3-3, although badly outshot) in the 1st and 2nd periods and got blown out in the 3rd, losing 8-3. Same story against Elmira; they were giving the Soaring Eagles a tussle for the first 2 periods (shots even and down 1-0) before a terrible 3rd in losing 6-1.
I think they find themselves and sweep at home.
Bowdoin and Colby play their home and home series. This is a blood feud kind of rivalry (even if Polar Bear students consider Colby a safety school). I like Bowdoin Saturday in the friendly confines of Watson, but the Polar Bears are 2-3 at Alfond over the last 4 years, so a split will not be a surprise.
I like Williams at Utica (although the Ephs really need to stay out of the penalty box). Coach Gillis has them taking a lot of shots and the Pioneer goal tending has not been sharp. Williams then entertain the Sacred Heart Pioneers Saturday, and again I would take the Ephs.
Hope to see you all somewhere.

Amherst 3 Wesleyan 0 after 2

Good to see you o'bear.

To complete the thought: goal 1, 5 on 3, #2, on the balance of the power play. Final: 3-1 Amherst.

Looks like you saw some good hockey in Hartford, too!

I hope you have a chance for your usual report!

Sorry to be MIA reportwise, but it has been a family hockey weekend with Daisy riding shotgun to Amherst and then meeting up with Ian and Kelly to take in the Panther-Bantam game in Hartford. I just watched and did not take much for notes.
Enjoyed sharing your thoughts on the Cardinals and the Lord Jeffs. It is difficult when penalties and special teams determine the outcome, but as I said, if things were reversed and the Cardinals had popped in a couple of PP gaols and won, the officiating would have looked much better to Wesleyan faithful. The teams in the NESCAC are essentially evenly matched this season and many, if not most games will come down to a call here or there. Everyone thinks the refs are bozos and I do believe you can make a case that the level of officiating quality has not kept up with the amazing evolution of skill and play at the DIII level.
It is amazing how the Lord Jeffs have fallen so quickly and I am afraid they are in for a long season. Must be painful for the players from the glory days to go out there everytime. The Cardinals are obviously building a team and just need a couple more pieces to be a much more formidable opponent (although they will need to replace Corvi next year).
Trinity clearly has the #1 tender in the NESCAC if not all of DIII in Pujol (she of the 98/100 saves). She made a number of outstanding stops (one sprawling pad save on a proto-typical Midd backdoor chance late in the 2nd was amazing) and Midd parents were heard asking "how do you score on her?" after the game. I have to think the Bantams my current choice to be the team challenging Midd the rest of the way (although the Polar explosion up at Alfond Friday in shutting out the White Mules have me having those Black and White dreams, and it will be interesting to see them in action against Norwich next Saturday at Watson). Midd just keeps coming at you and still is the best passing team; they are fun to watch, love 'em or hate 'em . The loss of a Greer would be difficult for any team, but they will have the break to regroup.
Should be a great game this afternoon on the Williams '64 ice at Koeppel.

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

This afternoon it was Midd's turn to ride a hot goalie as Pinsent was in net to turn aside 34/35 Bantam shots and the Panther offense lit the lamp 3 times in under 14 minutes to pull away and coast to a 4-1 win over Trinity.
The Panthers scored early in the 1st when Joyce grabbed a loose puck in the neutral one, took off up ice down right wing, held her edge in turning round the D and made a perfect feed to Martin streaking to the crease for a one-timer from the stickside of Pujol. Minutes later Midd extended the lead with a powerplay goal. Bielawski fed an open Krakower at right point, she had space and lauched a rocket slap shot that was deftly deflected from the slot, waist high and into the top stickside corner of the net by Mandigo. Bielawski scored a powerplay goal of her own when Sullivan got the puck to Krakower down in the left circle and her shot was tipped home by Bielawski from the top of the crease. The 2nd saw the lead grow to 4-0 with Fluke working low in the left corner, passing to Ugalde in the left circle; Ugalde fed through the slot to Downey and her shot found the net high on Pujol's stickside. The Bantams broke the shutout with a powerplay goal late in the 2nd. Rosen scored from the gloveside (Pinsent is a lefty tender) of the crease when she fought into a scrum at the edge of the crease and got the puck under Pinsent; assists rewarded the efforts of Ryan and Campbell on the play.
It was a great weekend of NESCAC hockey (the Editor even came up to Hartford this afternoon and enjoyed catching up with old firends!); I got a look at 6 of the 8 teams and it is hard to believe this portion of the NESCAC season comes to an end with Wednesday's Trinity at Amherst game.

The Trinity-Amherst game this evening was a non-conference game between two NESCAC teams. Nice win for the Bantams; Pujol was her usual solid self. Amherst is making far too many mistakes in their D zone. Salerno should have an assist on the Lloyd goal (I confirmed this with both the announcer on the vidoe feed and Coach Clegg) as she made the pass that sprang Llloyd for her coast to coast charge.
Good Luck to all in this weekend's action leading up to the Christmas break.
GO U BEARS!!!

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

The ladies Lord Jeff program will struggle this season given the off-season turmoil. Having 16 players won't cut it against similar or better competition in the 3rd period. Add also that Amherst's goaltending is not as strong as in past years, an interim Head Coach playing catch-up and you have the ingredients for a mediocre year. The team has core talent, but the supporting cast is weaker overall. Still, the Jeffs are not a team to take lightly, but games like tonight demonstrate they have come back to the NESCAC field. Speaking of the announcer, it figures Amherst would find an eccentric type to call their games. I have caught some of the Men's games and it seems like a very odd choice.

Understandably, Trinity, Amherst and Conn College slide a bit in the latest crunched numbers, but the Polar Bears...
Big opportunity for the PB this afternoon in the friendly confines Downeast...
I know coaches need to find time for backup tenders and it is appealing to use these non-conference contests for that purpose, but when the margin determining who receives the third Pool "C" bid and who stays home is so razor thin come NCAA season, is it really fair to the top teams from your conference to play backups and lose to Salve or Southern Maine? Say you are Middlebury and suffer a loss in the NESCAC final, and now you are looking for a Pool "C" invite. Does the Committee really see that your tie with Trinity came at the hands of a Pujol, while their loss to Southern Maine came when she rode the pine?

Coaches have to make the personnel decisions that are right for their teams. No obligation to other teams as you suggest.

Looks like USM went with their second goalie last night too. My question would be, how did Trinity only score one goal on the big sheet at USM? They should be able to skate USM into the ice. My hunch is Trinity had a bad case of bus legs. I would look for a very different result today.
I think Holy Cross had bus legs the first two periods at Bowdoin last night. They started to skate in the third period but it was too late.

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

A 2-2 tie yesterday afternoon between USM and Trinity. So much for my bus legs theory. A tip of the cap to USM.
