Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Middlebury opened their NESCAC championship defense with a 3-2 win over Colby tonight at Kenyon. The 1st period saw Midd with a big edge in territorial play and shots only to see Colby grab a 1-0 lead; Dewhirst worked hard deep in the left wing corner and got the puck to Slotnic who was able to slip the puck beneath Midd goalie Jones pads. The Panthers finally broke through on Colby's Wheeler and their tight defense as a 5x3 powerplay was expiring. Krakower fed the puck across the blueline to Strybicki; she got the puck ahead to Bielawski, who found space and, with 2 Midd forwards screening Wheeler, found the twine up stickside from the slot. Midd had a chance to take the lead at the 13 minute mark when Ugalde rang one off the gloveside post from the edge of the right wing circle. Jones came up big for Midd moments later stoning Fortier with her right padl Fortier had taken a flip pass and broke in clean for a shot from the slot. Midd took a 2-1 lead on a disputed goal early in the 3rd. Mandigo lugged the puck down left wing, fought off a player on the left half boards and passed ahead to Fluke at the top of the crease; she got the puck under Wheeler. Colby protested the pck was kicked in, but the refs conferenced with the goal judge and signaled goal. Colby capitalized on a rare rush into the Midd zone late in the 3rd to tie the score at 2-2 when Reynolds carried down left wing, worked deep and around behind the net and fed the puck to Fortier at the gloveside post; she beat Jones for the score. Less than a minute later Joyce netted the game winner; Marrison made a nice feed out of center ice to Joyce, who broke down left wing and launched a laser slapshot from the dot that appeared to glance off Wheeler into the top if the net gloveside. Exciting game; both squads play showed it was the season opene; Colby D was strong and they got some offense from 1st years; Midd showed good offense and had impressive 1st years to add to a deep squad.
Wite Mules and Panthers go at it again tomorrow at 3.

No box up yet, but live stats shows the Lord Jeffs up 6-2 in the 3rd and ending up hanging on for the 6-5 win with a player in the penalty box??? Did anyone see this game?

Box score is up & that seems to have been the scenario. Interesting to see how the rematch turns out tomorrow @ Ham.

Rematch at home for the Continentals, both teams played a complete game right down to the wire. Final after regulation 3-3 with SOG 27-28 for Amherst. New OT format of 5 min with 4 on 4 Hamilton took just under 4 minutes for Zimmerman to hammer home her 2nd of the game winner. Hamilton changed shifts well in OT with 4 changes and took it hard and delivered 4 SOG and Amherst did not register one.

Both teams played a fast, action packed complete 64 minutes. Unlike yesterday Hamilton goalie was strong the whole game but, Amherst took advantage of the power play (1 official, really 2 because the player still had one foot in the box on the 2nd) Each team scored 9 goals over the weekend in the split.

It is going to be another interesting year in the NESCAC

I do not know LM, but it is hard to imagine that a "serious D1 talent" would be going to Wesleyan (unless this is a legacy situation or she has some unique academic interest that they satisfy). It is a great school in a great league (she must be a good student), but there are many better places in D3 for a "serious D1 talent" player that are as strong academically.

Have seen both Corvi and Andover play. Corvi is very strong and would guess she likely will continue to be the primary starter in her senior year. Andover is very good and sets them up for 3 more years of strong goaltending (the Andover team she played on this year was horrible - she must have set some sort of shots on goal/saves record). I do not know why Andover cannot field a more competitive team given their incredible facilities, reputation, and orientation towards athletic success - seems to be a long term issue in women's hockey for them.

Had a chance to catch one of the Williams-Wesleyan games this weekend. Two observations about Wesleyan:

- Regardless of how good the freshman goalie might be, if McKenna doesn't continue to play Corvi in goal pretty much every minute she is out of her mind. Hadn't seen her play in a couple of years, but she has gotten even better. The only goals that go in on her are unsavable tips/redirections or the occasonal cross-ice one-timer. I've rarely seen a team work as hard for goals as Williams did with so little results.

- The new freshman LM played well, but didn't really stand out. Without much support around her it was pretty easy for Williams to control her. They will need a few more like her to be really competitive against most of the league, but they'll continue to steal games because of Corvi like they did in the first game against Williams. This could actually be the year they return to the playoffs.

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Five non-conference games involve NESCAC teams with ECAC-East opponents (and Sacred Heart).

Bowdoin over UMB-Polar Bears looked pretty solid for at least 1 period up in Stafford Saturday against the #1 team in the country; UMB wins have been against St. Mikes and Nichols

Conn College over Salve-a year after Kamel Koolaide and I am still picking Conn? This is a toss up; Seahawks strong in goal, playing their 6th game of the season; Camels coming off a loss and tie on the road against Trinity

Colby over Southern Maine-Colby has strong defense and net play, but needs to eventually find some offense in the post Anning/Scarpato/Julian era

Trinity over Nichols-are the Bantams ready to challenge Polar Bears and Lord Jeffs for 2nd spot in the NESCAC?

Sacred Heart over Wesleyan-Cardinals improving, but do they have the firepower to stay with the Pioneers? Can Corvi do what she did to the Ephs last Friday?

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Do we really think that the Lord Jeffs are the second best team in the NESCAC after getting a new coach, having a short bench, and splitting with Hamilton last weekend (during which they gave up 9 goals in 2 games)? Seems like that is quite a leap at this point - I would suggest that Trinity and Hamilton (as well as Bowdoin) could all finish ahead of Amherst. Be interesting to see how it develops.....

I look forward to the Panther/Cardinal this weekend, as I did not see any of the Lord Jeffs against Hamilton (and I agree it was a shockingly porous defensive effort for Amherst). While it may take some time to shake things out with all the changes, I cannot imagine any other NESCAC coach welcoming an Amherst matchup come playoff time. They have a number of talented personnel and I am sure will be able to surprise the complacent as the season developes. That said, they may be in for a tough time in Middlebury. Plattsburgh is a bit banged up (anyone know if Kinster will be back?), but made handling the Polar Bears look easy and comes in as #1; I thought Elmira was the big surprise back at the East/West (although they have been playing a soft patch in their schedule since then). Should be a great series of games!

Didn't get better for the Lord Jeffs this weekend - lots of goasl against. Too short a bench to be competitive night in and night out. Even with improvement from conditioning and getting used to their new coach (and presumably new systems), I'm looking for a .500 season or slightly above for them. And I hear that the recruiting pipeline went pretty much stone cold when Coach Johnson resigned and they lost most of their A list Early Decision recruits to other schools. Timing was terrible - not enough time for Coach Matthews to step in, call the recruits, see them play, and re-commit to them before applications were due. Guessing this will be a weak recruiting class for Amherst as a result, so may be hard times for a few years to come unfortunately. Takes a long time to build a program at a place like Amherst with high admissions standards, but a program can decline pretty quickly.

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

A quick shout out for Middlebury's Lauren Greer. She was named the NCAA D3 national player of the year in field hockey. Quickly shifting sports, she has been on the ice for the Panthers first four games of the season without any pre-season practice time and has been instrumental in their early season success. Great to see a good number of multisport athletes participating and contributing in the NESCAC. Definitely puts a premium on good time management skills.

Congrats to Ms. Greer for her POTY recognition!!!
She has been skating with Sullivan and they have developed great chemistry in a short time.
This weekend's trip to Trinity should be an interesting test for both squads; Midd offense has been firing, but the net play has been shaky; Trinity's Pujol leads DIII in saves % (54/55) and goals against and the Bantams may have found a sniper.
