NESCAC '12 to '13

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Amherst 3-0 at Koppen this evening. E. Martin and Lloyd twice scoring for Amherst. Trinity never really in the game. Hard to comprehend given their form coming into the weekend. Jeffs looked sharp. Sets up a big weekend at Orr for the Polar Bears to keep the 2nd spot in the standings. Couple of student announcers on the mic who fumbled their way through the broadcast. Cameraman went AWOL in the 3rd leaving the camera frozen on Bantam goalie Alexa Pujols for about 5-mins while the play was down the other end for the most part.

5-3 at Kenyon BTW in favor of Norwich is now a final.

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Caught the Midd/Norwich game tonight. Midd hung tough for a period and a half and then Norwich was just too much. I don't think the NESCAC type teams can fly at the same altitude as Plattsburgh and Norwich at this point.

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Norwich paid a cross Green Mountain visit to Kenyon this evening and made a solid statement that they are ready for the post season with a 5-3 win over an injury depleted Middlebury squad. Carrier played an outstanding game in goal for the Cadets stopping 27 of 30 Panther shots on the night. Ever dangerous Charron had 2 goals (25 and 26 on the season) and Parsons a goal and an assist for the victors.
It was Charron opening the scoring, taking a Parsons feed from center ice down left wing, using a trailer as a decoy and then beating Midd goalie Pinsent (catches right handed) off the short gloveside post. Middlebury answered with a pretty goal on a quick 3x2 with Joyce breaking from the neutral zone on right wing and moving the puck left to Sullivan who passed left to Bielawski; Bielawski made a strong move, turned the D and had space closing to the top of the crease and ramming the puck beneath Carrier to tie the score. The Panthers took the lead just as a powerplay expired; Greer got the puck out of the left corner behind the net to Fluke who reversed and went for the wrap around to Carrier's stickside; the rebound was chipped up from the top of the crease by Ugalde for a 2-1 Panther lead. Carrier was on her game as the Panthers peppered her net with several excellent scoring chances around 12: of the 1st. The 2nd saw play swing decidedly in the Cadets favor. A sloppy Midd breakout ended badly when DeBus scooped up a puck at the blueline and had space down left wing, using the D as a screen she was able to pick the far stickside post for the score to tie at 2-2. The next few minutes Midd was unable to break out of their D zone and you felt it was a matter of time before a Cadet score. Champagne worked deep in the left corner and got the puck to Invernizzi; she fed Gibson from behind the net to the egde of the left circle; Gibson beat Pinsnet up to the short gloveside to make it 3-2 Cadets. The 3rd opened with two Panther powerplays and Carrier was again outstanding in holding the 3-2 lead despite the contol and pressure on almost 4 minutes of play in her zone. Parsons extended the Cadet lead to 4-2 when she grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone, stepped across the blueline and launched a rocket of a slapshot beating Pinsent up to make it 4-2. The Panhters cashed in a powerplay chance to cut the lead to 4-3 when Marrison got a shot from left point on net and Joyce fought for the rebound and slipped it beneath Carrier for the score. Charron struck for a second goal on a quick transition play with Lortie dashing down right wing and zipping a pass to Charron moving into the slot; Charron had space and was able to deke Pinsent and slip the puck into the net to the goalie's stickside. Credit the Cadets with making adjustment to playing on the big Kenyon ice between the 1st and 2nd and for solid D net presence in supporting Carrier's outstanding net play. The Panthers made a game effort with only 16 skaters dressed (and in reality a slightly shortened bench) but Norwich looks to be tuning up for the post season and may finally be playing to the level many expected of them.

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

NESCAC play began 12 weeks ago and surprisingly little has been established in that time other than Middlebury is regular season champion, but the Panthers do not know who comes calling at Kenyon a week hence because any one of 3 teams could end up finishing in the 8th spot (Wesleyan could tie Colby at 4-12, but the White Mules have the tie breaker with their 2 head-head victories).
I think the final order of finish will be:
Middlebury (duh!) 12-2-2 Points determine NESCAC order of finish and either a Bowdoin or an Amherst sweep gives them 12 wins, but either comes up that 1 measley point short
Bowdoin 11-4-1 I am thinking split at Orr this weekend, but I have not bet the ranch on it
Amherst 11-4-1
Trinity 8-5-3 Sweep the home and home with Wesleyan, but the Bantams (ranked 7th in region) are a bit of an enigma
Conn College 8-7-2 Ranked 10th in region by the NCAA, the Camels have something to prove (and have the goalie no one wants to face in a one and done situation)
Hamilton 6-9-1 Split in Russell-Sage pulls Colby into 7th (if Conn takes care of the Ephs)
Colby 5-11-0 Sweep of Hamilton coupled with Conn sweep of Williams pulls Colby to 6th
Williams 4-11-1 Still in rebuilding mode, but 2 wins against Conn and 2 Hamilton losses against Colby means the Ephs finish 6th not 8th
Then there is Middlebury and their trip to Pine Valley, which I undrstand they have not visited since winning an NCAA title there in 2005 over the Soaring Eagles by a 4-3 final. A different era, for sure (Quizon with 58 points, Kogut with a .927 going 19-3-1). I did mention the Booster Lounge serves beer to the Midd parents after the 5-3 loss to Norwich Tuesday evening.
Anyway good luck and go see a game!

Exciting OT win for the Ephs last evening at Dayton!
While a couple of elements of the NESCAC playoff picture have come into focus (Midd is #1 Wesleyan is eliminated and Bowdoin, Amherst and Trinity will play home quarter-final games), this outcome has kept seeds 4-8 in total doubt, pending action today and on Sunday.
The game opened with pretty even back and forth action until Weinstein grabbed a loose puck off the right wing half boards and showed blazing speed down right wing, walking past 2 Conn defenders and in on goalie Fralick, scoring from low in the right wing circle.
The lone goal stood up for a period and a half of bruising action. The 2nd saw refs Piacentini and Waitkus assess 5 minors, but there was a whole lot of hitting going on. Fralick did yeoman work facing a minute or so of Williams 5x3 action, including a big kick save of a Vukasin centering pass from deep in the right corner.
Conn came out strong in the 3rd and scored at :26 when Bogue took the puck out of the neutral zone down right wing behind the goal line and centered the puck to Kallen at the crease; she beat Williams' goalie Billadeau stickside. The Ephs regained the lead when Goldstein worked hard in the left corner and got the puck to Conlon for a shot from the left circle; the rebound came to Dennett in the slot and she nailed the net up to Fralick's gloveside. Time was winding down and it appeared the Eph lead would stand up with Williams on the powerplay. Then Schuffenecker controlled the puck in the neutral zone and fed Dumont; Dumont stepped across the blueline and with an Eph D screening goalie Billideau, Dumont rifled one home 5 hole to tie at 2-2. A Conn penalty late in regulation proved critical as it meant Williams opened the OT skating 4x3. Conlon passed from the right across to Weinstein on left point; she had space and got off a shot that Vukasin redirected under Fralick from the stickside top of the crease for the sudden-victory win.
Billadeau was strong in net for the Ephs stopping 36/38 shots and earning the evening's 3rd star.
The teams meet again at Dayton this afternoon at 3 with wide swings in NESCAC playoff destinations on the line. My bet is Conn wins today and finishes 7-8-1, Hamilton splits with Colby and the Continentals finish 6th at 6-9-1, Williams is 7th at 5-10-1 and Colby is 5-11. This would then have the playoffs with Colby@Middlebury, Williams@Bowdoin (unless Amherst sweeps), Hamilton@Amherst and Conn@Trinity.
I have predicted very little correctly this season, so go watch a game and see!

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Looks like things are set: Colby@Middlebury, Williams@Bowdoin, Hamilton@Amherst and Conn College@Trinity

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Not yet. The Midd / Colby and the Trinity / Conn College matchups are set for next Saturday.

An Amherst win today would give them 2nd place in conference under the tie breaker (record vs top 4 finishers) and a home matchup with Williams. Bowdoin would host Hamilton in that event.

A Bowdoin win or tie today would give the Polar bears 2nd place and the game vs Williams. Amherst would host Hamilton.

Here is the link to the info on the NESCAC site. I read this to mean (and believe it has been the practice in past seasons) that ties are broken not on the total record against the top 4 teams, rather record against top finisher, then on down the line in descending order. This would put Bowdoin in 2nd based on their 1-1 record against Middlebury trumping Amherst's 0-1-1 against the Panthers.

Off to Orr to see how it all plays out. The Polar Bears were clearly the better team last evening, as their D were easily able to support Lessard's strong play and control the Lord Jeff forwards near the net. The Bowodin offense feasted on a particular Amherst D pairing (3/4 goals against). Bowdoin has been a bit Janus-like this season, but it is crunch time and good teams need to play well going into the post season. I still believe Amherst could be in the hunt for a Pool "C" bid in the NCAA process, although upsets in conference palyoff would obviate that hope.
Anyway, always a bittersweet trip to the last game of the regular season. Excitement of playoff anticipation, but knowing the end is near (and in Superior, Wisconsin).

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Noticed mention of C pool bids to NCAA III tourney on this thread. Can someone please explain how selection is done and what a C pool bid is etc?

Like brcketology for Womens Div III kinda thing for the ignorant like me.

Thank you in advance.

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Based on the current regional rankings the NESCAC can easily make a conclusive argument they are the strongest overall league in DIII.

There are 3 pools. Pool A is the automatic qualifiers...these are the teams that win the conference championship game (5 spots)

Pool B--spot for teams that do not have an autobid...there are currently not enough pool B teams to warrant a spot.

Pool C--spot for teams that did not get the autobid, but still qualify. (3 spots)

If the current conference leaders win the conference tourney the Pool A's would go to:

River Falls
Gustavus
Plattsburgh
Norwich
Middlebury

Pool C's depend on the regional rankings. The latest rankings were released today. You have to compare each team, 1 team at a time.
The top ranked non Pool A team in the east is Bowdoin...in the West it is Lake Forest

So if it ended today your teams would be
River Falls
Gustavus
Trinity
Plattsburgh
Middlebury
Norwich
Bowdoin
Elmira

Of course that all depends on the favorites winning out. I'm surprised Adrian moved over Lake Forest this week. Lake Forest wins the comparison over Trinity. Things will change as the playoffs ensue as well. Gustavus and Plattsburgh are guaranteed a spot, even if they lose in their title games.

Right now I believe River Falls wins Comparision over Elmira 2-1, and Trinity 2-1....so the east better hope that River Falls wins the NCHA :)

Thank you Jackets!

Next Question, now that I understand how they determine who gets in, what would the first round match-ups be?

I assume the highest seeds host the games.

I would counter that while the NESCAC has 6 teams in the ranking...they take up 60% of the east rankings....the NCHA has 5 and takes up 71% of the West Rankings :)

Dgrand..i created a D3 bracketology thread and answered your question there

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Tie breakers needed, however, for 5-6, as Hamilton and Conn. finish at 7-8-1

From the NESCAC website:

#8 Colby at #1 Middlebury
#7 Williams at #2 Bowdoin 4:00 pm
#6 Hamilton at #3 Amherst
#5 Connecticut College at #4 Trinity

Just hung up with The Pscychic Hotline and have my picks for the weekend first round play:

Middlebury over Colby. No fortune telling here, just plain common sense.
Bowdoin beats Williams. Yes, I agree with the psychic on this one too.
Hamilton in 3 OT vs Amherst. Bit of a surpise here but these teams did go 1-1 on the season albeit way back in November.
ConnColl over Trinity. Closely matched teams here and a toss up game. The psychic hedged but tells me she had visions of a Camel appearing in an ice rink.

Lest we forget, we are dealing with the dread NC$$ here and with 3 teams flying out to Superior, I have trouble thinking they will fly anyone to a quarter-final. Meaning unless they can put Adrian on the bus heading for Pine Valley, it has to be either a 4-4 or a 6-2 split.

Don't forget that they flew Concordia to RIT last year

Then all they did was fly Gustavus to Rochester: total of 2 trips. I would love to see it another way and it would be nice if the west had 4 teams, I just do not see it happening this year.
