NESCAC '12 to '13

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Bowdoin scored early when Midd was sloppy with th puck on a breakout; play favored the PB until a penalty resulted in a pretty goal by Greer from the slot and with a couple more penalties Lessard has been forced to earn her keep. Shots something like 12-4 Midd.

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Congratulations to Bowdoin! Marissa O'Neil has done an excellent job taking this team to the next level! Good luck in the NCAAs, keep it rolling!

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

You're implying, sir, that we need luck!

I hope the offerrings to the Goal Gods have been copious and well received! A little Lucky is never a bad thing when teams that are so evenly matched step on the ice. It is sort of sad that we all place so much store in winning at this point in the season. We should be celebrating the success that is reflected in our selection for the round of 8. Then again all those seniors just want to earn the right to lace'em up a couple more times. Best to all the players, coaches and parents and thanks for doing what you do!!!

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Best of luck to Bowdoin and Middlebury. As has been typical in recent years when NESCAC teams advance to NCAA's and play bigger, physical teams, you rarely see them advance to FF by 5-4 or 4-3 scores, they do it by keeping puck out of their own net. Amherst put a whoopin on Platty a few years back, but my money says Lessard and Jones are the keys to success today.

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Midd survived a lackluster 1st and really took it to them in the 3rd to tie. I thought the key was the Midd D in front of Jones and Sullivan and Greer pretty much lived on the ice as Coach Mandigo shortened the bench.
Great game and congratulations to the Panthers on advancing to Wessman!

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

The Elmira Soaring Eagles swooped into Watson Arena this evening and schooled the homestanding, higher seeded Bowdoin Polar Bears 4-0. I had not seen Elmira since their appearance in the Panther-Cardinal Classic way back in November, and I knew they were good, and tonight they were awesome. They made a good Polar Bear team look very ordinary. The game opened with Bowdoin buzzing around pressuring Sullivan in the Elmira net. Sullivan made a nifty glove save on an open look backhand by Bourque from the slot in the early going that seemed to set the tone for the evening: Bowdoin shot, Sullivan save. Rarely does a goalie dominate and get into the opponent's head as she did tonight. No doubt inspired by their goal play the Elmira offense came alive as the 1st wore on. About 12: in a long slap shot from the right point went off Bowdoin goalie Lessard's glove, struck the post and lay in the crease only to be snatched away by a Polar Bear D. At 16:40 Elmira brioke in 2x0 with Lessard stuffing Hogan on the stickside post. The Soaring Eagles got on the board moments later when their forecheck created a turnover in the left wing corner; Ryan grabbed the puck, had space and walked out into the faceoff circle before feeding across to Weston for the score, up to Lessard's gloveside. The 2nd saw Elmira extend the lead on a powerplay goal. Ryan and Johnston worked the puck up the right half boards to Wilgosh on right point; her long drive eluded Lessard up gloveside. The 3rd again saw Elmira with an early goal; Wilgosh got the puck down into the right circle to Curk; Curk spotted Johnston at the back door and Johnston's onetimer found the open twine. The Elmira penalty kill was outstanding and shone especially in killing off 1:14 of skating down 3x6 as Bowdoin Coach O'Neil rolled the dice and pulled her goalie. The Polar Bears controlled the puck for that time but were unable to beat Sullivan, who time after time was in position yielded no rebound. The final Elmira goal was similar to the third with Ryan on the back door, open at the stickside post with assists to Lamoureux and Delainy.
The Soaring Eagles now advance to play Gustavus Adolphus.

Guess I batted .500. Jones made the difference in game 1. Never thought Bowdoin would dominate and lose to a goalie standing on her head in game 2. If Sullie can duplicate her effort next week against GAC and Midd doesn't pull off the upset, we could be looking at an all ECAC-West final and who would have ever thunk that?

I wish the Polar Bears had dominated the game. Sully surely played a major role in Elmira's victory, and the Soaring Eagle special teams were outstanding (the Polar Bears were on the powerplay more than 8 minutes and attacked 6x3 for 1:14 without scoring). Bowdoin looked flat on offense (except possibly the first 10 minutes or so of the 1st) and just did not play good D supporting Lessard. Three of the Elmira goals were open looks in the back door that the second coming of Ken Dryden wouldn't have kept out of the twine.
Elmira looks to be firing on all cylinders heading out to face Gustavus.
Great effort by the Panthers getting through the 1st and coming on strong at the finish!
All you need is that 6 game winning streak at the end and...

Sorry O'bear, wasn't intending to editorialize on the flow of the game. Was pointing out that in most cases, top of NESCAC vs. top of ECAC usually has the ECAC controlling the action and the NESCAC goalies determining the outcome. The Elmira/Bowdoin game just didn't seem to follow that formula.

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Now that the Panthers are the last NESCAC standing is there anything else to say but GO U PANTHERS!!!
Their two losses to Plattsburgh are history. The game in Kenyon saw Aveson outplay Jones for the Cardinal win. The Panthers hung in there over in Stafford and notwithstanding the EN goal, they were one shot away from getting outplayed and outshot and still forcing an OT (ask Norwich how that can work out).

Well said. I second that GO U PANTHERS!!

I believe the winner of this game will take it all. Just an opinion, nothing more.

I would not discount Elmira's chances; I had not seen them play since Thanksgiving and they looked very strong in dispatching the Polar Bears while hardly breaking a sweat (and as former Elmira Coach Nemetz-Carlson once said "No one is more dangerous than a bunch of kids that don't know any better.").
There are a number of interesting factors going into this afternoon's contests. Teal Gove is POTY and the winner of that award has not automatically been on the team that won the title. The Panthers have had trouble with the Cardinals; the Soaring Eagles have had trouble with the Panthers (if it gets to that). Then there is Gustavus and you have to feel they are a quality team at 27-0-1 and I also have to believe the west will eventually win a title.
GOOD LUCK to all and may the Goal Gods smile on your offerrings!

I go with history. Midd's success against Plattsburgh occurs when their goalie wins the game. Even in the Midd heyday, Midd lost badly to Platty in regular season as Kogut gave up 3 or 4 (memory fades) but then won the title as the lower seeded team when Kogut shut out Platty on 30+ shots. History also suggests that Gustavus has trouble adjusting to play Eastern teams. Eastern teams tend to have more depth and also have ability to play physical and technical. These are traits that GAC doesn't get to see in the West. While I hope for a Midd sweep this weekend, history says Platty over Elmira.

Re: NESCAC '12 to '13

Too much Lauren Sullivan.
Great team effort by the Panthers getting this far and congratulations on getting the NESCAC back to the final and so close to another championship.
