NCHA 2012-13--The final season as we know it!

Re: NCHA 2012-13--The final season as we know it!

No worries.

Adrian drops a 4-3 decision to UWRF.

That must have been ugly at Point this past weekend.

Friday's game was over at :27 seconds into the game. Finlandia had 9 skaters and 2 goalies. I was told there were a couple of injuries and a couple of grade ineligible players. Finlandia has a couple of nice skaters on their team, but as a whole, they just could not keep up.

You hate to say it...but does this team need to go? At least Chatham can field a full team.

I was happy to see Superior split with RF this past weekend. Superior seems off to a slow start. Or is it possible they're going to have an off year?

They really shouldn't be having an off year I hope. They have a big portion of the team returning from last year, so they should be improved. I watched most of the game on Saturday online. They were a lot slower than River Falls in my opinion. They seem to be caught up in this "play bad on Friday, play good on Saturday" routine that has plagued them in the past. Hopefully the ship gets righted soon and they go on to home-ice in the frozen four!

I think we'll see an interesting race to the top this year. There are several teams that look really strong - RF, Superior, St. Scholastica. Adrian is typically a contender - but they've got a relatively young team, albeit some talent - so it'll be interesting to see what they do.

I think the team I'm most curious about is Marian. New coach, some talented players - will that breathe some life into them? Now don't get me wrong, I don't think they'll be at the topic, but I don't know if they'll be the bottom 1 or 2 this year. The absolute bottom will, of course, go to Finlandia. How do you lose half a team with a new coach? That's not a good indication of things to come.

Re: NCHA 2012-13--The final season as we know it!

I thought the series between uws and r falls was two pretty evenly matched squads the difference Friday was falls buried there chances uws didn't,I thought they had the better of the chances credit falls goalie Friday night she came up huge.if uws can find consistent play up front they will be very strong

Re: NCHA 2012-13--The final season as we know it!

I think if you looked at the two games on the weekend the two biggest differences were the amount of missed opportunitys by UWS including a goal
that went in but was not counted and their lack of jump. They changed up their defence a bit for the Saturday game and the whole team seemed to play with much more intensity . I think if they play like they did in the last 35 minutes of Saturdays game they will play with anyone. Goaltender also came up big when needed like on the shorthanded breakaway near the end of the game.
Looks like some of the new recruits should be able to have an immediate impact. Go yellowjackets.

Let's not toss in the towel yet. The new coach was not hired until this past spring, well after the fall 2011 recruiting cycle. It is only fair to give her a full year to start bringing in her recruits and building her team. Maybe some of the players who found themselves on teams of twenty-something should take a second look at Finlandia. I don't know of too many players who enjoy watching the game more then playing the game. SNC is a good example of player overload this season. It will be a rough year for Finlandia, but the A.D. backs his programs and the new coach has set her objectives.

This brings up the great question of what makes a team viable. You have programs like Marian, Chatham, and Finlandia that have struggled to get wins. Is the common denominator financing? School size? Coaching staff?
Why do players choose St. Scholastica over Finlandia?
I agree with Finfan, Finlandia should be able to field a full team. Looking at past seasons, Finlandia did field a full team. I wondered why the change this year. Through the grapevine (I have a college aged daughter with links to Finlandia) there were some disgruntled players with the new coach so they lost half the team. Sometimes that happens. Both Marian and Finlandia had coaching changes this year. Both were hired at the same time (I think Kivi was actually hired after Syrowick). But Kivi looks like she was successful in recruiting. Does it matter that Kivi was a player at a good DIII school while Syrowick was a player at a low-level DIII?
Marian is my personal favorite this year (in addition to St. Scholastica) so I definitely think that some of these bottom bracket teams have potential and can make something of themselves! I'd love to be surprised by Finlandia, but I'm not sure a new coach (regardless of how good) will have that much of an impact.

Re: NCHA 2012-13--The final season as we know it!

I have to give the Finlandia coach and players credit. In the Point series where the games were so lopsided, it would have been easy for the Finlandia players to get chippy and play dirty. That did not happen.
