NCAA Tournament Prognostications

Re: NCAA Tournament Prognostications

Adrian was #3 in the West last week. St Thomas was #2. And if Adrian-Geneseo is a Wednesday night game, the 500 mile rule dictates that the winner would go to Oswego on Saturday.

I like this.

What I really think would be right is 2 Western quarters, with Point traveling to Adrian, and UST traveling to SNC. Forget last weeks regional rankings...

Re: NCAA Tournament Prognostications

I got another question. Who's #1 in the East now, with the top 3 going down last night?

Re: NCAA Tournament Prognostications

SNC should not have to play a play in(edited from quarterfinal) game being ranked 1. Thats like making a division leader and 1st ranked team play in a wildcard game in the NFL. There is a reward for being ranked higher, and that reward is not having to play Wednesday. The extra effort to proceed is for the lower ranked and or at large bids to deal with. However they have done this to them in the past(2011) and I'm sure it's not the last time. With the NCAA it's all about cost and money, not what's right to do.

You mean play-in game. SNC will not play in a play-in game. With an 11 team field, no one gets a bye to the semis. They will get a bye to the quarters.

I don't think SNC has any concerns regarding a Wednesday night game this year.

SNC will not be playing a play-in game on Wednesday. They will have a "one and in" on Saturday which is the minimum amount of games you can play to get to Lewiston. Therefore, they are rewarded for their #1 position.

Re: NCAA Tournament Prognostications

Yeah I meant a play in game. It seems I remember them having to play in one when there were lesser ranked teams that didn't have to. That's all I meant. The committee will do what they want though, and I should just bite my tongue:)

Re: NCAA Tournament Prognostications

A couple years ago you guys had to play us in a play-in game. And correct, it wasn't fair to you guys at all.

The other site has their final bracketology article up. I won't link it, because I don't know if that's kosher, but they conclude what we already know: this thing is a total cluster****. Well worth reading.

And the other site makes the assumption of eliminating teams right away, and even then they can barely pick the field. If the comittee decides not to eliminate teams right away ... well ... it may take them till after the tournament is over to figure out which teams to pick...

Can we all just agree on one thing? Whatever the Committee does, it won't be 100% right?

The "best" part of this is the fact that the rankings provide an example of a potential infinite recursive cycle. One of the components is record against ranked teams. So you compute that record, then list the ranked teams. But when you compiled the record, you discover that some teams that were ranked drop out of the rankings, thus you have to recalculate, thus producing a new list of ranked teams, so you recalculate ... That infinite recursion scenario is why they went to the "once ranked, always ranked" concept, which they discarded this year (probably because they forgot why they went to it in the first place).
