NCAA Selection Show

Re: NCAA Selection Show

I don't think there are 16 teams that can honestly claim a place in the finals. But, particularly because of the auto-bids, I could see a 12 team format with the bottom teams playing at 5-8 to advance. This would allow the auto-bid teams, the bubble teams and a couple of the nearly made it teams to prove which deserve to be there. I assume fans of the 13th ranked teams would still argue they got shafted but I suspect they would get less sympathy.

I admit to being too lazy to look but I suspect someone(s) here can answer. Has an PWR unqualified auto-bid team ever won a tournament game?

Mercyhurst made it to the Frozen Four in 2014.

Re: NCAA Selection Show

I would argue that Cornell and SLU are on par with both OSU and Minnesota. I'm not a math expert, but I'd like to see where SLU would have ended up in the PWR if not for the 5 losses to Clarkson.
The trip to Anaheim and the split with Lindenwood hurt, as did forgetting that Harvard is not the Crimson of old who owned the Saints.

My thoughts on the selection show ... if they're going to have a broadcast and not mention a thing worthwhile that every poster on these boards doesn't already know, don't do the show. Just post the brackets. Hell, they couldn't even manage to get any footage from their #1 seed.

Location. Location. Location.
They went to Omaha.

Re: NCAA Selection Show

The auto bids really hurt this season. I would argue that Cornell and SLU are on par with both OSU and Minnesota.

In addition to what's already been said, while Minnesota is an automatic qualifier based on winning the WCHA tournament, those wins also pushed them up to #5 in the PWR, so they'd be in even without the AQ. Ohio State is 6th. Cornell needed a better performance, either this weekend or at some earlier point in the season, to keep their heads above the level where BC stepping on a banana peel was enough to leave them vulnerable.

Far behind a Minnesota team that got to drop its four losses to Wisconsin.
Ah I do enjoy this game every year although it's usually exclusively out of the west :D

ncaa.com and hunt
Go to the schedule page of the home team's website, it'll be linked there.

Re: NCAA Selection Show

Wow, that is a really good question. My guess is no but now I'm going to dig and try to find out.
These are the teams outside the top 4 who have advanced:

2017: Minnesota (played #3 Duluth as an at-large)
2016: Clarkson (played #4 Quinnipiac as an at-large)
2015: None
2014: Mercyhurst (played #2 Cornell as an at-large)
2013: Mercyhurst (played #2 Cornell as an at-large... ouch)
2012: None
2011: None
2010: Cornell (played #4 Harvard as an autobid but would have made the tournament as an at-large)
2009: Minnesota-Duluth (played #4 New Hampshire as an at-large)
2008: Wisconsin (played #4 Minnesota as an at-large)
2007: This year was nuts, all 4 underdogs almost made it with #1 Wisco needing 4OT to beat Harvard 1-0. Harvard was an autobid, but they were 6th in the Pairwise so they would have made it as an at-large anyway.
--Minnesota-Duluth (played #2 Mercyhurst as an at-large)
--Boston College (played #3 Dartmouth as an at-large)
--St. Lawrence (played #4 New Hampshire as an at-large)

In 2005 and 2006, only the top 2 teams were seeded:

2006: Doesn't look like there were any upsets
2005: St. Lawrence (played #2 Minnesota-Duluth as an at-large)

Prior to 2005, only 4 teams made the tournament.

So it looks like the answer is no. Interestingly, Cornell in 2010, and I guess Mercyhurst in 2014 although it didn't count for autobid status, are the ONLY road teams to win their quarterfinal game after having won their conference tournament. Everyone else lost in their conference tournament.

This is a great point. I will borrow a phrase from Shelfit, “Do as you are expected to do.” Beat the teams that on paper you ought to beat. If you are not going to win your tourney, there is little room for multiple missteps throughout the season.

Thanks for not being as lazy as I am. It really shouldn't be surprising I guess but it could be that a team got hot late & just didn't play enough highly ranked opponents to break into the top 8. It might happen some year. I still like the idea of 12 teams but that would add a week and cost money both of which would not get past the NCAA currently. I don't particularly like the auto-bid deal but I can see where it could be good for the sport as a whole if every conference is at least represented. The downside is that some more deserving teams get bumped if the auto-bid team is not a challenge.

You can add Mercyhurst to the list that lost in their conference tourney, but then go on to win a quarter final on the road. RIT won the CHA tourney in 2014 vs Mercyhurst. Luckily for Mercyhurst this was pre auto bid, and they still got to play #2 Cornell, in NCAAs.

So Cornell in 2010 is the only team to win their tourney and then win a road quarterfinal. Hopefully that changes this weekend. :)

If I am completely objective, I am sympathetic to this. The CHA hasn’t gotten great results since getting the auto bid:

2015: 6-2 Minnesota over RIT
2016: 6-0 Wisc over Mercyhurst
2017: 7-0 Wisc over RMU

I am hopeful it will change, of course!

You’d have to look and see if there are other lopsided games in the other quarterfinals, I don’t know. My gut feel is that we’ll get decent quarter finals this year. Would not be surprised at all if a road team wins.

Should we start calling OSU, "The UConn of the West"?

Hell no! That is a complete insult to OSU. UConn finished in 7th place in a much weaker conference and then got lucky to play well in one weekend that counted to knock off the 2nd place team. Plus they are coached by a guy that nobody respects. Totally opposite to Muzzy and her team.

I'm kind of shocked Shelfit ripped a division 1 coach. So out of character.

But I'm really worried about the OSU coaching staff. I figured OSU would win last week-end against MN in the most important game of the year. I mean, even 9th place Merrimack and 8th place Vermont, from a much weaker conference, could beat the Gophers in Ridder.

OSU will definitely lose all respect if they can't beat BC. Crappy #7 UConn, from a much weaker conference, is 1-1-3 against BC last five. So on paper this should be a cake walk for OSU, from a much stronger conference.

Lol, correct!
